argus vol 11l buffalo new york april 3 1950 ; . *_ . no 19 crowd throngs film showing 1700 drawn to hayes aud to see human growth the showing of the controversial film human growth by the argus and american veterans committee last thursday night was inundated by a crowd of approximately 1700 composed of both ub students and interested buffalonians hayes hall auditorium the scene of the presentation was thronged to capacity and then a bit even so hundreds of others unable to make their way into the auditorium jammed the stairways and lower halls avc chairman al siegrist stunned by the turnout decided to show the film twice at the con clusion of each showing a panel of experts consisting of dr carleton scofield head of the ub psychology department alvin gouldner so ciology instructor rabbi elihu rickel of temple beth-el and dr kennath alford a prominent buffalo pediatrician answered all the questions concerning the film the film was prepared for chil dren of the 8-12 year age group and was as the title implies merely a study of the growth of a human being from conception to maturity with a comparison of the differences in the growth pro cess of males and females in view of the fact that the contents of the film could hardly be considered a first revelation to the adult audience although many parents brought their children the questions asked were not those primarily dealing with the technical aspects of the film instead the experts were con fronted with queries as to the ef fect that such a film would have on young children whether the present teaching staffs are capable of supplementing the film and why the film was banned from the city schools of buffalo in reply to the question of the effect that the film might have a question that seemed to be spon sored by the fear that the children viewing it would be tempted to make further empirical studies of the subject matter mr gouldner corrected what he termed a funda mental misconception he said the question is not one of knowl edge vs no knowledge but one of where the knowledge is obtained — from competent sources or in the streets as to the ability of the teacher to answer the questions provoked by the film dr scofield replied that a start had to be made some where and that the children of this generation with adequate sex in struction would be more capable of teaching this all-important sub ject to the children of the next generation he remarked that had the teachers of today had such in struction when young this prob lem would not exist the question that appeared to confound the majority of the audi ence however was why any group having seen the film should see fit to ban it rabbi rickel answered that the members of the board of education have refused to face reality and conduct themselves as mature responsible people of the community he referred to the pressure groups who forced the film to be banned as composed of individuals whose bodies had ma tured but not their minds mr siegrist who in addition to his position as chairman of the avc is an ex-editor of the argus remarked in closing that this evi dence of overwhelming interest in the film should in his opinion in cite other civic-minded groups to sponsor further showings no threat seen to academic freedom the past few weeks have witnessed a fear on the part of many students that the academic freedom at the uni versity of buffalo was being interfered with this fear was based on the fact that the chaplains of the university had been instructed that they would not be able to conduct regular
