argus vol 11l buffalo new york september 26 1949 no 2 a freshman looks at u b by paul gonson the transition from high school to campus life is just a little more thrilling than had been our initiation into the intricacies of high school life a few short months after we had writteji finish to the final chapter of our elementary school days we had felt a fierce stab of pride that we were about to embark upon our second voyage through the turbulent seas of knowledge but today as then we have been toppled from a lofty pedestal from omnipotent seniors we have been humbled to lowly freshmen once again we have experienced that same dazed feeling of bewilder ment and mystification that was ours to know that day when with reverance and awe we first set foot m that strange new building that was to be our home for four sweet years for the less fortunate five or even six years and what has been the net results of our initial week at the institution of higher learning on north main we have been bled dry of our very life's blood purchasing books sup plits athletic books lockers and more books paying tuition fees ad infinitum we have worn our souls down to the holes m our socks standing m line for this and for that many of us have stood m lines at clark gym which ter minated m the wall two girls were standing m a rapidly moving line for ten minutes when they discovered to their horror they were lining up to the boy's lava r tory we have been sold subscrip tions to the bkband passes to the elevator m norton hall by enter prising upperelassmen who could make much better use of their time contriving a conveyor belt replete with seats leading to the bookstore entrance stern faces m front of hayes hall have demand ed our hayes hall entrance cards we have m general writhed m agony under the merciless ridicules and jibes to which we have been subjected the coup de grace the piece de resistance our freshman . caps the inevitable has occured we have wised up those punk sophomores who had acted like such big deals dur ing orientation week we have discovered are really seniors who were genuinely sincere arid friend ly m their hapless attempt to ac quaint us with the rituals and tra ditions of college existence a few however are real genuine honest to-god punk sophomores still that bleak initial morn our frosh pots our freshman dinks were forced upon us 1 we felt a surge of rebellion me wear that we would exclaim haw towards the end of the day however our sentiments had reversed themselves a few flow ers of the nation softened to the extreme they considered the dinks cute the majority of which the male element was profuse m their boundless thanks for the latter part of the first paragraph on page 28 of the bosco bur freshman bible which states verbatim men are requested to remove their caps when entering a building life had loveliness to sell when mormon chorus to sing at u b the utah centennial chorus appearing here for the 2nd conse cutive year will ort 2 nsa shelves prejudice ban dixie delegates threaten a gromyko argus makes correction the argus of sept 19th stated m a report on the national student association's convention at urbana illinois that the michigan plan had been adopted this plan as stated called for the banning of any new campus organization with discriminatory clauses m its charter and for the education of present groups with i such clauses we have since discovered that this report from urbana was in correct the air of quiet optimism engendred by this report has been dissipated a study of the resolu tion which was adopted m the michigan plan's stead gave rise m its place to disillusionment and contempt perhaps a comparison of the two resolutions will explain our position the michigan plan as intro be it resolved that nsa further urges that student government working m cooperation with cam pus organizations determine a pe riod at the end of which time those organizations still having discrimi natory clauses within their chart ers and/or constitutions would make provision for reviewing them with a view to determining whether the said organization has made a sincere effort to remov its discri minatory clauses approval for continuation of said organizations would be based upon the progress that the said organization has been making towards the removal of those discriminatory clauses at the introduction of this reso lution however a group of dele gates from the land of jim crow arose and threatened to walk out of the convention if the resolution was passed their move was doubteless motivated by the real ization that this resolution m con trast to the others passed by the assembly actually had some anti bigotry teeth m it intimidated by the gromyko action of the budding senator claghorn's the rest of the delegates agreed to table the proposition and replace it with the following be it resolved that nsa fur ther urges that student govern ments working m cooperation with campus organizations meet period ically to determine the degree of progress made m the elimination of discrimination and that the stu dent governments and these or ganizations would then jointly de termine what further programs should be followed the milquetoast quality of tills substitute is obvious it is shocking o contemplate that this entire uni versity of genuine liberal tradition is as we are all members of nsa pleged to condone what is m effect a set back to social justice u b bows to colgate the university of buffalo bulls went down m defeat last satur day m the face of a fast and ex perienced colgate
