the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly vol 7 university of buffalo may 6 1927 no 28 bison staff gives dinner dance to honor new members extensive plans made for improving publication the old staff of the bison gave a formal dinner dance at the teck cafe saturday evening april 17th in honor of the newly elected bison statf about twenty couples attended of this number dr and mrs grant hector were included on this occasion the new staff members were formally intro duced they are editor edmond farris art editor lucille whitney book editor jean wallace circulation manager clarice spar he rg advertising manager francis smith the new editor eddie farris in pre senting next year's policy said that thero will be a competition system in which all those who wish to try out for the staff will be known as contributors for one year if the contributors ma terial is better than the staff member's material the best will be used the sec ond year if the candidate is elected to th staff he will be known as a staff member and will be allowed to vote the third year he will be eligible for a major position in this way everyone's work will have the same chance of being published and there will be no preference shown so that all may have equal rights and expectations the object of next year's staff is to put the bison of the university on a real college standard of humor maga zine and not produce one of a mediocre high school type s a c at meeting vote bison head election illegal the s a c meeting was held at the alumni club tuesday evening may 3 the report ou the junior prom was given by donald purple a large defi cit was announced so a final report will lie given in a month regarding the mak ing up of this deficit the dramatics report was given announcement was made of the an nual s a c dinner which will be given il the alumni club saturday may 14 in honor of the incoming s a 0 mem bers and the non-athletic leaders of the past year dr hector reported on the bison the publications committee has dictated a constitution for the publication aud elections have been held under tho auspices of the s a c a financial report was given by the auditor dr eemon announced this to have been the best year for the musical clubs which gave their successful home con cert last week john allen reported on moving-up kay to be saturday the exercises will '»' held in bennett high school notice was made that the bison head members were tapped without the submitting of the names of the new candidates to s a c which makes the lection void for the time being senior honors group holds final meeting the final meeting of the senior hon ors group for the year will be held on friday may 13 at 4:15 p m the speaker will be dr henry a lappin professor of english literature in u'youville college his topic will be contemporary irish poetry the following references have been suggest ' i lennox robinson the golden treasury of irish poetry john cooke the dublin book of irish verse and w - b yeats collected poems dr boynton has requested each mem dc r of the group to hand in a complete report of the readings for the year at da time league of nations model assembly held at syracuse ; the model assembly of the league of nations held under the auspices of the school of citizenship and public af fairs of syracuse university convened friday april 29 in slocuni hall syra cuse university } ninety delegates from the 55 coun ■tries which are members of the league attended the conference actually they i came from 11 colleges and universities whose students participated in the model assembly the visiting institu tions were alfred college university of buffalo colgate university cornell university elmira college hamilton college hobart college st lawrence university university of rochester and wells college among the delegates were many who were actually natives of the countries they represented both china and japan had representatives present a persian addressed the assembly in his native tongue and several other nation alities were gathered there at 2 o'clock chancellor flint con vened the assembly he announced that syracuse university had denounced all territorial claims to that particular piece of property and had turned it over to the league as neutral ground for the occasion nominations for pres ident were called for and jervis lang don jr delegate from germany by way of cornell was unanimously elected iu accepting the presidency mr i.angdon stated that his election was an honor not only to himself personally but also to the country which he repre sented he considered this friendly gesture toward germany a representa tion of the international friendship which should actuate every movement of the league the agenda of the league were examined and adopted after different items of the reports had been debated by the delegates the council was ad journed a dinner was held in honor of sir george foster canadian statesman and professor blakeslee of clark university professor j b candliffe of the uni versity of new zealand spoke sir george foster and professor blakeslee were the speakers of the evening the former having for his sub ject canada the united states and the league while the latter spoke orr the united states aird the league sir george who was leader of the canadian delegation at the first and seventh assemblies of the league saw it as the hope of the world in working toward the ideal of international peace his address was a powerful one and was enthusiastically received professor blakeslee sees this country as divided in her own soul one . possible solution of the problem he pre ( seuted — a pan-european league to deal ( with european problems a pau-ameri , can league for the american problems j and a similar group for pacific rela tions he believes however that pub ] lie sentiment in america is strongly in ( favor of the world court , debate club holds annual banquet may 7 the last regular meeting of the de bate club was held thursday evening april 28th at townsend hall when the election of officers for the coming year was held the new officers arc morris opler president clarice sparberg vice president elizabeth slater secretary bruce challin treasurer and shcrmau butler sergeant-at-arms it is hoped that the new officers will meet with as great success as those of the present year the final arrangements for the annual banquet have been made it will be held thursday may 12 at 7 o'clock at the lenox hotel piease make reserva tions before may 10 with elizabeth slater at arts or with clarice sparberg at law the price of the dinner is 1.75 seventy-five cents of which is payable with the reservation u b stunt night marked by many interesting feats dean gregory outlines growth of y clubs tuesday the u b y club wound up a very successful year by its stunt night participated in by all faculties which was very well attended this year the experiment was tried of electing officers early in the calendar year for the suc ceeding school year with the result that to start off in september the club has a well organized and smoothly running cabinet ouce again the credit goes to win martin during tho beans popular numbers were played by a three-piece orchestra composed of e flinchbough j campbell and w seil followed by or ganized and harmonized mass singing led by an embryo carlsou iu the person of bob vallely win martin the stu dent secretary passed up his annual farewell speech and made a short sim ple appeal to the boys to drop in the y during the summer aud especially to those who graduate not to loose contact but to remember they still belong deau gregory of pharmacy gave a short historical sketch of the develop ment of the society the y in buffalo itself seventy-live years old this year first had its contact with the student body when in the fall of i'joo a com mittee was formed to attempt to link the two and on this committee which reported favorably were mr whitford mr long and dean gregory the re sult was that iu 1001 when we had a student body of 700 a house was rented at main and north streets with a dor mitory for a few men but financial dif ficulties intervened and the house had to be abandoned following that the club struggled on with meetings in the medical and dental buildings until rooms were engaged at main and north with a paid secretary then followed four student secretaries predecessors of the presentable incumbent the deau closed by approving reference to the u b club as the foremost if not the only common meeting ground of the students of all faculties several solos friend of mine mandalay " and brown bird sing ing were given by the silver voiced tenor teddy holmund the president clyde george em phasizing the fact that no report could give to students the feeling and atmo sphere of a conference but its effect was confined to those present who were the haven to help the mass gave a short summary of the dansville conference at which there were represented fifteen colleges iu the state this side of new york city the issues of the conference taken up in discussion both in groups and the world's first . floating university which will sail ; next september on its second round-tire i world cruise to combine class room . study with the education of travel the , winners of the essay contests will go along with all expenses paid on scholar ships valued at 2,500 and offered by the association the committee of judges will be composed of dr john h finley former commissioner of edu cation of the state of new york anil now editor of the new york times ex governor henry j allen of kansas head of the journalism classes on the floating university dr henry noble muccracken president of vas sar college dr stephen pierce dug gan director of the institution of in ternational education dr edward h hume former president of yale iu china dr mather almou abbott head master of lawreuceville school law reucevillc n j and professor milton conover associate professor of politi cal science at yale university the three subjects on which young men all over the eouutry are writing are 1 the international point of view in education 2 the influence of the west on the east 3 contracts in eastern and western civilizatiou in order to give a greater number of students time to take advantage of the opportunity to study aud see the world the date of closiug of the contest has been changed from may 15th to juue ist the growing acceptance among edu cators of the theory that formal educa tion can advantageously be combined with the education of travel on a floating university — which is in ef fect a traveling campus — is demonstrat ed by the list of judges who will serve on the committee said mr phelps last year we were frankly experi menting but this year we know from experience what we carr do best and how we carr do it and we are gaining the support of colleges and universi ties all over the country we do not propose to replace the landlocked col lege but to supplement it ex-gover nor allen who accompanied the first cruise to the jo countries visited stated the case when he said the present cruise has convinced me that a college afloat may be made a significant addi tion to our educational system not only do educational values justify it but the added opportunity it offers for the cultivation of international friend ship makes it of peculiar usefulness at this time " the original cruise which sailed from new york on september 18th last with a student body of 500 and a faculty and staff of 00 will arrive in new york on i monday morning may 2d seniors sell roses ; serve tea to sophs the senior class of the arts college started off their week of festivities with a rose sale on monday and a tea for sophomores on tuesday by noon on monday practically every one had acquired a fragrant rose bud signifying that they had supported the sale and helped to make it a success the committee in charge of the sale was dorothy goodman chairman laura o'day elizabeth boft barbara kinibor ley and margaret griffith on tuesday the senior class played host to the sophomores at tea the girls room of foster hall was elab orately decorated orange sherbet and dainty cookies were served by members of the class clad in caps and gowns the success of this event was due large ly to the efforts of the committee cou nting of charlotte ucaleer and mary williamson registration of students required by tuesday may 17 three dollars fine will be imposed upon delinquents spring registration begins monday may b and must be completed on or before tuesday may 17 a fee of 3 is charged if bled after this date with in this time the schedule of classes for each student should be filed in the col lege office obviously if too many elect the same section of a course some schedules must be changed iu chang ing schedules preference is given to those wdio complete their registration first the registration procedure is as fol lows 1 secure the registration blanks from the college office 2 see the personnel officers who will be in their otliees as follows dr for distinguished participa tion in student activities the intramural track meet couducted under the auspices of beta pi rho fra ternity will take place at nichols field at 2:30 p m wilfred kerwin is di rector of the meet u b chess team defeats niagara falls the university of buffalo chess team closed its season successfully during the easter vacation drawing with arrd defeating the powerful niagara falls chess club personnel of the univer sity of buffalo team included s fru cella s tulchiusky j hoffman l pelowski w misiek f okoniewski w williams the season just ended was one of the most successful in university of buffalo chess history the team having won two matches drawn two and lost oue all of which were played against the strongest opposition
