the bee university of buffalo april 11 1930 no 23 vol 10 meeting of student union called for next wednesday constitution of student council to be discussed on next wednesday following a program by the popular kampus kol legians there will be a meeting of the student union for the purpose of discussing the proposed new consti tution this constitution will fill a need long felt by those who have been on the council it is the result of long and careful preparation by able stu dents the board of councillors has viewed it from every angle and ap proved of it in its entirety leaders in the university who have grappled with the problems of student govern ment feel it supplies the wants neces sary for a strong self-governing body think it over note its breadth of scope and possibilities of action vote for its acceptance among the many favoring the new constitution who recommend you ac cept it are mark e richelson alfred 0 retter frank j dressier alfred sc'iwartz len schrag r l beyer simon meltzer kenneth h eckhert kollegians and irc band feature next convocation the kampus kollegian orchestra under the direction of israel leder man will entertain at convocation wednesday april 16 the peppy tunes and magnetic drawing power of these university jazz musicians were well exhibited two weeks ago at the most enthusiastic gathering of the year their popularity is made and will assure a truly representative student body at convocation a meeting of the student union conducted by the student council will follow the kollegian's program at i this time a discussion of the newly formed constitution will take place it is of great importance that each student shall have read the copy of the constitution which appeared in last week's bee so that intelligent and critical comments can be given this renewed effort in building up a worthwhile student government liould be responded to with a great leal of interest and enthusiasm on april 23 the famous i r c harmonica band will be the attrac tion at convocation composed of twenty lively men this band will play many popular well known tunes including old favorites as well as new watch for further announce ments of this program dean alden tells y club of trip through england the delights of travel on the eng lish road were described by dean carlos c alden of the law school ut the regular bean and bull session of the u b y club last tuesday a low-powered morris motor car ried the dean and his family up the almost sheer devonshire hills and other steep places of britain with surprising ease in his itinerary he met on every side monuments setting forth the activity of british arms in lls innumerable wars over the whole globe i had the greatest thrill of nlv life said dean alden when i passed under the same gateway and stood on the same wharf as did john alden when he boarded the may flower to come to america to start th p family here math club plans enjoyable evening for april 15th the mathematics club will hold its next meeting tuesday april 15 at eight o'clock in the women's lounge hayes hall the program will follow the gen eral plan a brief history of some phase of mathematics will constitute the first topic bill williams will ex plain empirical equations including their application to statistics the philosophy of mathematics is the third topic and will be discussed by bill haenzel an evening of profitable entertain ment is assured all who attend the math club meeting plus the ever inviting refreshments submit lists for awards by tuesday apr 15 the general call has been issued by the s a c committee on awards to the managers of student organiza tions for a list of candidates for awards these lists should be com piled in consultation with the faculty advisor in each instance these are to be submitted to the chairman of the awards committee dr a b lemon not later than april 15th the item on the s a c budget amounts to 175 and the committee on awards is advised to keep strictly within this amount by limiting the number of awards given conditions shingles awards of shingles have been dis continued except in such instances as when a candidate having completed a satisfactory period of service will not at no other time be eligible for any other award s a c members who have served faithfully in that capacity for a period of two years may upon recommenda tion of the president of s a c the publications who have completed three years of faithful service and who is recommended by the faculty advisor and approved by the committee on awards musical organizations a key of suitable design will be kenneth hines gives concert kenneth hines a noted singer gave an informal recital for the benefit of the students at convocation wednes day he was very entertaining and although he was supposed to sing only two songs his encores were more than twice that number his singing seemed to be mostly for the benefit of the co-eds for he sang sigh no more ladies and the little irish girl the latter about a girl who was won by his mention of the little pigs he owned his rich voice was a treat to hear after listening to some of the attempts at singing in the squawkies and we hope he will come again members for bee staff announced for ensuing year a remarkable spirit of unanimity marked the election of the new bee staff at a meeting held yesterday eve ning in the grosvenor library every candidate was chosen by a substantial majority when his or her previous record had first been carefully dis cussed the responsibilities of editor-in chief particularly called for one who was fitted by long experience to cope with any emergency which might arise kenneth h eckhert was se lected unanimously recognition of work done by mem bers of the make-up staff proved more difficult but a comparison of perform ance assigned the post of managing editor to harold seatter the position of news editor is an acknowledgment of faithful and con sistent service in the handling of news assignments with the addition of that sense which tells when an item possesses interest for all margaret kocsis will be the overlord of humble reporters for the coming year dolores wonnacott one of the asso ciate editors has been appointed assistant news editor a sports editor has the most un enviable task of keeping track of scores and plays while the crowd goes wild over a winning team in this case stern devotion to duty is essen tial and for that waring shaw is superbly fitted as copy editor jack russell inten sifies his effort in the sort of work which has engaged his attention for the past two years with every prom ise of great success on the business staff richard peter was the only logical candidate for business manager his work as ad vertising manager placed the paper on a firm financial basis which has made it possible to look to the future with confidence clifford jones and roscoe simmons have been appointed assist ant advertising managers margaret gould became the new kumro j benderson women's debate club meets swarthmore friday april 18th at 8:15 the women's debate team meets swarth more college the subject for discus sion is of unusual interest resolved that all intercollegiate athletics should be abolished and replaced by intra-mural sports the buffalo team upholding the negative side of the question is ealean henderson and janet buch wald students present papers at meeting of philosophy club the philosophy club held an edi fying meeting consisting of presenta tions of papers by miss margaret kocsis and miss clara marquardt it was a brief symposium on historical greek philosophers miss kocsis in competition with noisy radiators delivered a eulogy on the sophists greek thinkers and teachers explaining their position in philosophy to the evident satisfaction of the audience — for no objections were made to any of her statements an admirable thesis on atomism as the basis for epicurean ethics was ably given by miss marquardt as she developed the cosmological theory of epicurus with reference to his ethics she stressed the modern ity of his views and the logical con tinuity of his work dr farber offered to the club a plan of joining the kant geselle schaft german philosophical asso ciation which has branches through out the world which publishes a magazine the kant studen in which are represented the doings of all the philosophy clubs that are affiliated a prerequisite is a knowl edge of german and the sum of 4.00 as subscription fee the matter was referred to the further consideration of the members election of officers for next year will take place at the next meeting which will occur in the first part of may prof thomson to speak on friday evening professor j arthur thomson of the university of aberdeen scotland is the fenton foundation lecturer fri day evening in the grosvenor library his topic will be the different kinds of evolution the lecture which as usual is open to the public will be gin at 8:15 p m chancellor capen dr kelly address senior pharmics dr e f kelly secretary of the american pharmaceutical association of baltimore whose visit to buffalo in the interest of establishing the western new york branch of the na tional association was excellent rea son for the banner attendance of the senior pharmics chancellor capen was the other guest of honor to make it the greatest event of the monthly supper setting's of the pharmics excellent food songs between times with haagland and raub entertainers par excellence to help digestion the chancellor briefly pointed to the future of pharmacists as profes sional people secretary kelly sur veyed recent national progress in its several phases everybody welcomed the opportunity of having the chan cellor and dr kelly record squad goes thru paces daily with coach lee every day forty-five hard-working loyal supporters of the university of buffalo are giving up their afternoons to practice football so that the blue and white may have a banner team next year certainly this is one thing that everyone at u b can appreciate and applaud biffy lee head coach for the bisons assisted by a staff of nine cap able and efficient lieutenants is put ting the boys through many hours of hard tough workouts in prepara tion for the first two games of the 1930 season when u b meets car negie and fordham undoubtedly these games will be the toughest of the season and hard work now only gives the boys more time to work things out so that everything runs smooth when we buck up against these major elevens there is one point which every player should take notice of and that is eligibility more than once excel plans for play discussed at blue masquers dinner on thursday april 3rd blue masquers met for dinner and a busi ness meeting there was a goodly number of members present and the social committee feels amply repaid for the effort expended to make this a success we were delighted to have with us miss keeler of the studio school of the theatre who spoke to us about amateur theatricals and laid particu lar stress on our own forthcoming production the romantic age the business meeting was devoted entirely to plans for the play every one went away with the feeling that the success of the production rested with him individually then too he was exorted to accept some of this responsibility and go out and sell tickets faculty interest was well repre sented by miss helen reid and dr martin brumbaugh we were glad to have them with us and thank them for their kind words of encourage ment it is hoped that this is an in
