horton extemporaneous speaking innovation this season the i'liiversity debating society victors in 17 of their l'l forensic ell eountors will start preparation lor their sixth year of intercollegiate de bating at townsend hull on wednesday evening at s o'clock with a plan of activity that will interest and aid every 11 b man or woman who is anxious to receive training in extemporaneous speaking ease and poise of public ad dress and debating i'ntil this year ia an effort lo make ii record that would serve as a founda tion to further achievement ihe stress was placed on the teams that roprc sente.l tha i'aiversily and ihe training of those who were members of the club and not of the team was not seriously undertaken with the appointment of mr john morton as chief coach and adviser mat ters immediately took n dilfeienl aspect we have had a most successful youth said coach horton we must now plan for a more useful and service able maturity one of ihe most crying needs ol a university graduate is ease of utterance the ability lo speak ex temporaneously and yet speech — which we use every hour of ihe day on which the livelihood of so many of us will depend is the most poorly and awk wardly developed id our social func tions as n result a syslem of extempor aneous club debates open forums and personal criticisms has evolved and is now offered to every student who can appreciate the benefits of such training the stress has been quite properly placed where it will do the mosl g 1 on ihe building up of the society for instance no one will be eligible for places on the teams who is not a club member of good standing yet it must not be thought ilint inter collegiate debut ing will suffer because of the enlarged scope of club actlvl lies in addition to mr horton ihe staff will boast of mr george brewer as general adviser and dr niles car penter as statistical advisor hoth of these men stand out prominently in their respective fields of literary and statistical criticism and their aid was largely responsible for hist year's rec ord of seven victories out of nine de bates manager paul harbison of tin men's team announces negotiations with illinois pittsburgh byracuso queens and hobart with invasions of pittsburgh and geneva assured and that of kingston ont ponding miss anna llrvol manager of the women's team assures us thai she is working on a schedule that will demand great forensic ability if the unblemished slate is to be kept clean for another season an eager and encouraging interest in this year's debate plans is already no ticeable and the many requests for in formation and assurances of participa tion have brought the officers to the conclusion that it was not lack of in terest but of opportunity that stood as a barrier to extemporaneous speaking in the past a banner attendance on wednesday eight aa extremely success iu year and an abundance of more cul tivated speakers aad keener thinkers is expected by those who sense the value of excellent coaching plus well laid plans chancellor capen welcomes political institute members crime and punishment subject of first meeting chancellor samuel p capen will give a word of welcome on behalf of the univorsity of buffalo at ihe opening luncheon of the fifth annual institute of political education which is to be held at the hotel statler on october 32nd and 23rd the institute is being held under the auspices of the league of women voters in co-opera tion with ihe university of buffalo and is planned to give both students and citizens a chance lo become beter ac quainted with governmental problems aa exceptionally interesting program has been planned this year and it is one that will appeal to many univer sity students there will be luncheons round tables evening lectures and forums and both prominont out-of-town and local speakers have been secured the courts will l.e the general theme of the institute miss minor will speak on child waste and its prevention at two thirty the round table sessions will be ( gin one having for its topic of discus sion child welfare and social hy giene and the oilier stalling the gen oral theme of ihe institute courts confining itself to the county court and the sheriff on thursday evening there will be a session at eight o'clock with an oxport criminologist speaking on crime and l'uuishment the friday oftornoon round tables will be upon the subjects of ihe city court and public education the latter round table lo be led by dr clarence thurbor executive secretary of the univorsity of buffalo the speaker for friday evening is judge jean 11 nor lis city magistrate of new york city she will speak mi problems of our criminal courts and her address will be followed by an open forum on sal urday morning two round tables will convene at 11 o'clock one on the pod oral court and the other on interna tional itelations david lawrence well-known press correspondent will be the speaker at the closing luncheon on saturday and he will take as his subject is the cen tralization of government a menace the tickets for the institute are one dollar as formerly the luncheons of course being extra tickets and lunch eon reservations may the time from among tho throe junior tnom hers on the hoard of councillors soph-frosh dance at townsend hall a gala affair first collegiate hop scene of much good fellowship the soph-frosh hop was held satur day night october i at townsend hall the sophs and freshmen of all the schools turned out in a goodly num ber for an evening of fun and getting acquainted the room was appropriately decorat ed in orange green blue and white streamers with the placards soph and frosh at either end of the balcony an expressive caricature of a frosh adorned one of the blackboards peppy music was furnished by jerry camp bell's orchestra there were several exhibitions of stunt dancing during the intermissions provoking much mirth among the crowd refreshments were served toward the end of the evening robert harrington president of the sophomore class was ia charge of the hop mr kurtz acted as chaperon the door committee consisted of hub ert harrington lee morsheimer ami steve donovan the first alumni magazine to appear november fifteenth a year is beginning in which tne alumni association of tho university of buffalo has ninny plans and hopes of enlarging and improving itself the publication ut tho alumni magazine is scheduled to appear about november 15 irving k templeton was elected editor al the last alumni meeting any thing similar to this has never before been attempted next to the magazine in importance is the endeavor to make tho branch clubs more active and the association expects to have monthly lunch meetings of tho alumni in tho various brunches a series of radio talks by prominent faculty and grad uates are being arranged to keep in further contact with the alumni the alumni association has an inter esting history in its attempt to become a strong organization in the i'niversity until 1913 there was only a divisional association in the schools of medicine dentistry pharmacy ami law the faculty was well organized but there was uo general alumni association through lester kaufman a graduate of the medical school buffalo's fed erated alumni association was organiz ed consisting of the dean of each school ami college the president of the division association and two added delegates appointed from each division this was called tho house of delegates of the federated alumni association they formed the federation ami not only attempted a local organisation but district branch associations were formed in the territories of rochester syracuse elmira jamestown and binghamton last year li)l's tho association was reorganized as the alumni association of the university of buffalo the al umni secretary was authorized to or ganize an alumni office to keep in touch with former students ami a per mani'iit alumni headquarters was re quested for the soph-frosh to be held between halves of the buffalo-niagara game on satur day october 9 i—frosh1 — frosh will lineup on the 20-yard line on the north end of the held and the sophs will lineup on the 20-yard line on the south end of the field - — three footballs will be placed on the line at the center of the field a — when whistle is blown contestants will run to center of lield and attempt lo gain possession of the balls 4 — the object of the game is to carry the ball back over the goal at the end of the held from which the contestant started s—passing5 — passing of the ball will be per mitted but no kicking o—balis0 — balis out of bounds will be thrown bach in by the referees who will wear white hats so as to be distinguished from the contestants 7 — when the whistle blows the rush will cease and the balls still in the respective territories will count the same as those carried over the goal line b—lmportant:8 — important bull must be carried over the goal line will be chosen is i lie held on monday and tuesday october 11 and il th junior lass of the arts college was authorized to sell tags the pro ceeds of the sale will be used in the de oral ion of the stand at rotary field on arts day october 11 pharmacy students lead colleges in bee subscribtions the pharmacy school may well least of heading the list of bee subscrip tions this year with 100 per cent as its record the arts school follows with 435 subscriptions which is scarcely t its credit since there are almost a thou sand students aten.ling the people at arts are after all the ones who should lie most interested in the bee because they are right on campus and in cam pus activities to a much greater extent than members of the other schools it is planned this year to have a uewi column from the medical and law schools and this should most certainly be an incentive to members of those schools to get a little more interest in the bee women's glee club opens largest year an organization meeting of the wom en's glee club wus held wednesday noon september 2h in science hall the manager for 1926-37 katherine jung called the meeting to order she told the new candidates of the achievements of the women's dice club last year and urged every girl to try out kstelle goldberg spoke to the girls about the uke club that was organized last year in hopes of arousing still more interest in the musical activities for women in the i'niversity monday afternoons from four to live o'clock was the hour decided upon for practice the hours in which tryouts will be given will be announced later the program for this year although it has not been revealed promises to be a most interesting one all girls still feeling the call to become members and who as yet have not made known this desire may try out as soon as the announcement appears to that effect it is hoped that the wonderful suc cess of the women's glee club in the pait will be continued and even aug mented this year
