the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly vol 6 university of buffalo june 8 1926 no 30 alumni association hears moot at annual concert influence of arts college outlined by chancellor capen mrs smering succeeds dr boyton as president on thursday evening at seven in the washington room of the touralne hotel was held the annual banquet of the alumni of the college of arts with dr richard wilson boynton president of the association presid ing to his address of welcome john horton responded for the class of 1!)2g after which william cook enter tained the company with his wreck of the julie plante and elaine rubery at the piano with grainger's irish tune from county deny and kreisler's caprice viennois the honorable adelbert moot vice chancellor of the university of the state of new yoi k addressed the association on the value and import ance of leisure in the pursuit of cul ture his thesis was that of all the many ways in which one can spend his time that of reading and study is the most delightful and profitable mr moot congiatulated the associa tion upon the solid progress that the college of arts since its not very re mote foundation had been making an evidence of this progress as pointed out by dean park is the de velopment of the honors system which as he said might well and per haps better be called a system of in 1 dependent study for tlie coming year the group will be nearly double that of this comprising about forty members of the philosophy of edu cation which this system implies of its return to the real spirit and love of the pursuit of learning the dean spoke with enthusiasm chancellor capen's theme was the unifying influence which the college has exercised upon the university as a whole four years ago when doc tor capen entered upon his chancel lorship the university was something ' in the order of a loose confederation of states both undergraduates and alumni thought much less in terms of the whole university than in terms of : their individual school whether of medicine or law but in these four ' years a quiet revolution has taken ' place and the sometime loose con ' federation has been welded into a ' strongly unified whole informed with ' a genuine corporate spirit — a revolu . tion which the chancellor attributed ] largely to the development of the col ] lege which in the american system al < ways froms the heart and centre of 1 the university < in the election of officers mrs l janey smering was chosen president l of the association for the following year john horton vice-president ; mildred wheaton secretary viola i hultin treasurer i summer courses at geneva given prof zimmer announcement has just been made that the courses on international pro'o lems held in geneva last summer are to be repeated during the coming sea son the courses are now known as the geneva school of international studies but are the same as those given under the auspices of the inter national universities federation last summer under the direction of prof alfred zimmer extensive plans have been made for the coming summer any further information may be secured by writ ing to the secretary of the gene'a school of international studies go broadway new york city course in technique of study offered in summer session study designed to meet needs of backward freshman a four weeks course in the tech nique of study will be introduced at the university this summer it is , designed to meet the needs of the members of next year's freshman claaa who are among the lower two fifths of their high school graduating class in explaining the origin and need of such a course dr edward s jones of the personnel department says every state college and urban uni versity experiences a feeling of con flicting responsibilities one of which is to serve the community by giving everyone a chance for higher educa tion the other is to maintain high standards the psychological tests given for freshmen with a view to securing greater efficiency have ap parently not been used sufficiently and to compromise between responsibility to the community and to the univer sity we are trying to take people from the upper three fifths of the high i school classes we have found that i there is a closer relation between the particular high school fifth in which the freshman is graded and his work in college than there is between the psychological test and his later work the people in the lower two fifths however we feel should not be ad mitted unless we know more about them whether they are deficient in some particular subject whether they know enough about proper studying and whether they are capable of suc cessfully carrying on college work it is the purpose of this course to dis cover these facts the course begins on august 23 and continues for four weeks approxi mately one third of the time will be devoted to psychological and educa tional tests and the remaining time will be given over to drill in note-tak ing reading and proper methods of study there will be i charge of twenty dollars for the course ten dollars however will be remitted before the end of the second week if it is dis covered that a student is not capable of doing the work , dr jones recommends that univer sity students who are acquainted with members of next year's freshman class who may be in the lowest two fifths group inform them of the nec essity for entering this course fresh men in this group will be required to pass the course the course in the technique of study will be entirely independent of the regular orientation course re quired of all freshmen which begins on sept 15 personnel office to help job hunters the personnel office announces that m employment bureau will be run during the summer although it is to be established particualrly for teachers it aims also to help those desiring to enter other fields it offers its services to graduates post-gradu ates and summer school students definite hours for conferences will be set after july 1 appointments may be made by telephone a reception given by chancellor and mrs capen for the council graduating classes alumni and j faculty of the university was
