the bee no 21 vol 10 university of buffalo march 28 1930 milne's humorous romantic age dramatic clubs next offering noted artist to prepare stage sets and scenery the blue masquers three-act veh icle the romantic age by a a milne is certainly coming along in great shape both the author and the play are well known in dramatic cir cles mr milne is noted for his humor and for his marvelous ability in handling stage action he has that quality which enables him to charac terize his actors and to develop his plot in an amazingly short time which assures the audience that there will be no dull moments of long useless dialogue miss mcfadden the director of the play and coach of the blue masquers is confident that this will be the greatest success that the dramatic organization has had in the last decade the best indication of suc cess she said is that my players have learned their lines so rapidly of course i realize that this is com paratively easy in this production be cause each speech is psychologically correct my players realize this too hence they cannot only learn their lines more rapidly but they can also act them with more assurance the scenery of this three-act pro duction is receiving more attention than usual in most amateur theatri cals mr sheldon viele who was with the theater guild of new york city for two years is devoting much time in designing this necessary de tail it has been said by several con servative observers that the sets for this production are equal to those used in the original companies in new york and london the romantic age has a most amazing plot the scenes are varied and there are many hilarious situa tions that keeps the audience chuck ling to the very end the play is in no way didactic and is written only for the entertainment of the audience several modern conveniences like the stock market and golf are satirized cap mellon talks to y club about loyalty to school captain mellon the beloved cap f lafayette high school and of all ignorance of what psychology is that causes people to call psychologists either atheists or spiritualists as one clergyman was re ported to have done psychology was prematurely launched from the cradle of philoso phy dr scofield believes and conse quently it is still wrestling with many problems which properly belong to its parent defining science as the intellectual izing of unknown reality dr scofield explained that in handling this un known the scientist uses two meth ods of description particularizing and the conditional mode the particular method leads to the nothing-but illu sion dr watson like the blind man who thinks an elephant is a rope says that human beings are nothing but stimulus response mechanisms condi tional description on the other hand lends itself to such pitfalls as gestalt or instinct systems which attempt un successfully to interpret human be havior in terms of their canons u of b freshmen to debate against canisius frosh the freshman debate team coached by
