in art of living our every expression tends to mold our character in a slight degree said dr richard boynton in a talk before the u b men's club last tuesday evening dr boyton pro fessor of philosophy spoke on the subject the power of habit in his talk dr boynton traced the developments of the artificial ma chinery of our make up more com monly known as habits the spider has a marvellous instinct on which to rely to build his home and protect his young the chicken has an equally uncanny intuition but a human in fant has to rely on habits which he forms to aid him in his later life it is just as if plaster paris were poured in a mould in that way our habits are the mould and our cha racter is formed by them according to psychologists those habits formed in our early youth are the ones which are the most deeply rooted for example one can only become a linguist by mastering a language as a child later in the talk dr boynton said that the true art of living and edu cation consisted in starting and keep ing going those habits which tended to make us better and rejecting tho3e which were detrimental to our cha racter thus it was to our advan tage to make many of our habits mechanical dr boynton then con cluded his talk by quoting henry james rules for changing our habits his essence of these rules was first to launch ourselves forward toward the correction of the hahit with a steadfast purpose secondly never to suffer an exception to occur and lastly to seize every opportunity that would stir us to do away with the old habit the president announced that at the next meeting
