affair tonight is the night when all pres ent past and future buffalonians gather to shower their appreciation on the greatest basketball team u if has had everyone from the most in significant freshman to the highest most exalted senior and to the proud est old alumnus will bend and twist their affairs that they may attend this celebration any who do not join in with bison head to honor our team will feel lonely the elks ballroom will be the lo cation at which les erlenbach's broadcasting band will cast a musical charm over all this orchestra is the essence of rhythm and melody they will play from 10 to 2 o'clock purchase a ticket 3.00 secure a lady and fall in line all ye who have not already done so there is no doubt but that this affair will surpass all expectations bison forensic team defeats rutgers on armament topic by buffalo squad negative side of question defended at a debate held in edmund hayes hall wednesday evening march 19 buffalo defeated a team from rutgers university 2-1 on the question re solved that all nations shall adopt a plan of immediate complete disarma ment except such forces as are needed for the police protection of the terri tories and dependencies dr julius w pratt acted as chair man and the judges were mr a axel rod mr walter brown and mr frank kalmbach the members of the rutgers team which upheld the affirmative were krederic c lerocker livingston b sperling and chester v stalker buffalo was represented by emil cohen elmer tropman and melvin weig who defended the negative before an audience of about fifty people the after-war germany this was the first of a spring series of lectures to be given by this insti tution dr julian park gave a dinner in honor of the distinguished speaker earlier thursday the visitor ad biggs performed the ceremony joseph abeles the best man and marian e beckstein maid of honor both stu dents at buffalo were the other mem bers of the party miss arbuthnot a prominent senior on the campus is active in student ac tivities and is a member of theta chi sorority mr ridall captain elect of football is also a loyal supporter of all student enterprises he is also a member of bison head society the parents of the couple have wel comed the newlyweds and the students join in wishing them congratulations preparations for ubessa follies well under way the 1930 edition of übessa follies will be given in the hotel statler ball room saturday may 3 roswell p rosengren is director and walter a giles chairman weekly rehearsals are being held at the statler friday evening at 9:30 miss emily hallock who so success fully trained the singing chorus last year is again in charge of the fair ones mr giles is being assisted by lor etta m staubinger and earl cruick shank several committee chairmen have been named including paul walker tickets and promotion karl helfrich advertising edward wesley ticket distribution louise hallock director of chorus the setting of this unique school get-together for sororities more than one hundred sorority girls attended the supper sponsored by the panhellenic council on monday march 17 in the women's lounge amidst colorful st patrick's day dec orations the girls found the opportun ity to become better acquainted with other groups three speakers were introduced af ter the supper by evelyn fraser pres ident of the u b panhellenic council | marjorie seipp and molly hazel who have just returned from the national fanhellenic conference held at ohio state university gave reports en thused and inspired by new ideas they discussed the methods by which other alleges promote interfraternalism dean lillias macdonald in her talk stressed the need for nationalism and good fellowship among college women the standard of any university de pends on the people in it and it is ily through good fellowship that we fan bring out the best that is in us to help foster a true interfraternal spirit panhellenic has given to the university a silver cup upon which the name of the sorority attaining the highest scholastic standing shall be inscribed each year dean macdonald presented the cup to phi sigma sigma who attained the highest average for the year 1928-29 a program of a musical nature fol lowed introduced by nita goldberg chairman of the program committee esther johnson played two piano so | los spanish dance by granados and mazurka by schumann muriel maclean gave an original play tea for two which was light humorous and very entertaining constance reynolds sang two numbers accom panied by sarah ellen rider who is sylvia by schubert and winter lul laby dekoben the supper ended informally and very successfully with songs each sorority sang its favorite tune and all joined in the alma mater led by ellen rider it is hoped that more wednesday evening in the women's lounge of edmund hayes hall a group of thirty math en thusiasts professors and students en joyed a well planned and successfully consummated program the first of a series of readings on the history of mathematics was given by mr west he cited some inter esting examples of the early begin nings of arithmetic by primitive man and the persistence of these even to the present day the general use of the scale of ten he traced back to primitive man's finger counting next miss higgins presented some facts in the life of pythagoras and explained various interpretations of his famous right triangle theorem the biographical introduction served to humanize the more or less intricate elaboration of the pythagoras mathe matical theories following this mr stone enter tained the group with a series of mathematical fallacies geometrical puzzles and probability problems these fascinating perplexities indi cated that mathematics can be a re creation as well as a worry miss florence mcmath announced the next meeting to be scheduled for the honors group the next meeting of the hon ors group will be held on fri day march 21 at 4:13 p m in the honors future of the freshman science course richard w boynton chairman commissioner of philippines next assembly speaker at convocation wednesday march 2<;th we are to be honored by a dis tinguished speaker senor camilo osias a native of the philippine is lands formerly speaker of the phil ippine house of representatives senor osias is now resident commis sioner of the philippine islands in washington he is fully acquainted with the life and conditions in the islands it will be of great interest to hear senor osias's opinion concerning philippine independence and the misgovernment of the insular territory by the united states because of the discussion of the past few years he will tell of the life in the islands and what are the best relations of the people with the united states an added attraction at convocation will be the kampus kollegian's or chestra they will endeavor to arouse student enthusiasm before and after the discussion of senor osias by a special musical surprise i ability displayed in student papers before bios club the paramount aim of the bios club to stimulate interest and inves tigation in biological studies was real ized wednesday march 19 when stu dents displayed their ability in the papers they presented at the regular meeting held in the women's lounge the pathological aspect of parasitic forms was the principal topic of earle ridall's paper his international relations club kljtin sheik professor for six years at the american college in teheran persia will be the speaker at the bi monthly meeting of t'he international relations club next thursday evening in the music room of the grosvenor library mr sherk's topic will he the political relationships of russia and persia the club is particularly honored in securing professor sheik inasmuch as he is internationally famous he i spent a decade in persia teaching and studying social economic and politi cal affairs there he also delved deeply into soviet russian affairs in his talk for which he will make a special trip to buffalo he will discuss the politics in russia and persia and the political relations of those coun tries with other nations views of the contemporary russian situation have been expounded from sundry different angles but this will ibe the first time that soviet politics will be considered in detail persian politic should be of equal interest because the
