reception for the evening ses sion students on friday evening at townsend hall the chancellor be lieves that the evening session is doing an invaluable work in the com munity and states that other cities are watching our educational projects along that line with interest because the evening session stu dents are more mature on the aver age than the regular students and because they for the most part are busy during the day earning their living they show themselves to be more diligent in their studies and they put a higher value upon learning dean marsh also addressed the stu dents encouraging them in his genial way and advising them to follow their studies to a successful end the announcement was made of the awarding of the pharos club's scholar ship to miss bertha schwenger a teacher in technical high school the scholarship is awarded annually to the woman student who has during the previous year attained the best scholarship standing and has given the greatest promise of pronounced the benediction which rked the opening and close of the ircises mr jay mark war led in the singing and chancellor capen ad dressed the assembly in his address to the students chancellor capen made a point of the fact that there are certain things which the freshmen hold in common with the upperclassmen you have thrown in your lot with the univer sity said the chancellor you arc now part of the university and must have high hopes for it as well as for your own careers for what happens to the university is of supreme interest to all the citizens of buffalo re established this institution four or five years ago and you must not be indif ferent to their efforts nor forget their sacrifices every contribution affects all and every contribution has seen the university increase every student continued chan cellor capen at the beginning of his college life enters into an implied contract the first obligation of the contract is to make the most of what the vniversity offers the second is to be decent in enlarging upon these obligations the chancellor said that because of the tremendous disparity between the cost of higher education and the sum paid by the student it is necessary for the student to work as hard as at any job one of the disquieting things about higher education is that no one can foresee what conditions will be encountered or what problems will arise later on while university train ing may not fit the student to meet unforeseen problems in detail h will furnish him with the background which is necessary for the future chancellor capen emphasized the fact that the important objective of college training is to make students rreate formerly their duty was to learn knowledge already possessed now the attitude is changed and the main objective qt higher education is creative work carrying with it new ideas and new interpretations referring to the second part of the contract chancellor capen said that during the period of his association with the university there has been no disgraceful performance on the part of the students nothing has happened to disparage the good name of the university and public functions have been carried out with dignity and good taste we rely on the stu ts to keep this tradition intact l advising that student life should be made somber the chancellor urged that every one engage in some extra-curricular activity as far as his time and talents permit the relations at the university are simple and natural while rules re strictions and regulations are mini mized the animating motive of the faculty is one of cooperation and their aim is to be fellow students who are a little farther advanced to the zealous ones who are im patient at the seemingly slow growth of the university the chancellor said we are strong in essentials and growing stronger he then an nounced the appointment of fourteen new faculty members who have been added to the teaching staff this year continued on page 2 j 1 there is a
