the bee the greater university of buffalo weekly vol 5 university of buffalo april 3 1925 no 22 faculty pays tribute to dean gregory at banquet colleagues present university's senior dean with radio set establishment of gregory scholarship loan fund announced the executive council and the faculty of the university with chancellor sam uel paul capen presiding paid high tribute to dr willis g gregory dean of the college of pharmacy at a tes timonial dinner saturday evening at the hotel lafayette in honor of his thirty-fifth anniversary as the phar macy dean more than 150 members of the university faculty and student body attended dr gregory was pre sented with a radio set as a token of the school's appreciation announce ment was made of the gregory scholar ship fund which will perpetuate the name of dr gregory for posterity dr capen spoke of dr gregory's co operativeuess as the senior dean of the council of deans and his willingness to subordinate his own interests and the needs of the pharmacy college that the interests of the entire university might be developed great praise is due the dean for his untiring efforts during the thirty-five years he has serv ed with the building of foster hall dr gregory has seen his dream for the pharmacy college fulfilled tho chan cellor went on to state the honor that the dean had brought to the university by being a member of tho national pharmaceutical committee working upon improved standards for education in pharmacy dr gregory is a na tional leader in the field of pharmacy education dr capen also brought out tho thought that men not buildings make the university dr gregory was suc cessful in building up men who were worthy representatives of the univer sity by raising to a higher plune the ethical standards in connection with the profession mr john lord o'brian speaking for the council and mr adelbert moot praised the administrative ability of the dean dr frank s fosdick principal of masteu park high school and a life long friend of the dean s paid very high tribute to dr gregory's leader ship in community affairs us well as in the university he has always had a keen interest in all community under takings that tended to make progress dr albert p sy read a large num ber of congratulatory telegrams and letters from deans of other colleges of pharmacy and other leaders in the held among those who seut messages wove dr augustus s downing com missioner for higher education uni versity of the state of new york dean win b day university of 111 iuois and secretary of the pharmaceu tical association the deans of colum bia university st louis philadelphia college brooklyn college massachu setts colleges and many other colleges sent greetings dean julian park referred to the af fection and esteem in which dr greg ory is held by his fellow deans and the faculty in general in conclusion he announced that the faculty members had installed a five-tube atwater-kent radio set iu dr gregory's home with out his knowledge dean gregory accepted the gift very graciously expressing his deep appre ciation of the large honor that had been given him by having the anniversary i dinner he expressed his hope that : similar anniversaries would be celebra : student mass meeting a student mass meeting will be held monday april 6th at 12:30 o'clock in room 110 in foster hall jim ailinger president of the student athletic association will preside and present the speakers who are dr thurber dr simpson president of the athletic council and tieorge metz captain elect of the football team the meeting is primarily for men students all of whom are asked to be present seniors down sophs in girls basket ball tournament the most auspicious event of the year so far in the annals of the wom en's athletic association was the an nual basketball tournament which was held on thursday march li ia the gymnasium at the rotary field teams from the different classes played against each other for the school cham pionship juniors played the seniors when the first game was called at 1:30 p m in the interval between the halves the sophomores matched against the freshmen these preliminaries were won by the seniors and sophomores the two freshman sub-teams played while refreshments were served wo noticed that not only some prom inent members of the faculty were among those present but in addition several members of the varsity basket ball team possibly they were on the lookout for some recruits or watching out for a formidable set of rivals if questioned they will tell with enthu siasm about the spectacular playing featured in both games we have yet to see a more hardly contested game than that fought out between the sophs and frosh another feature of the afternoon was the cheer ing there was more enthusiasm shown here than ut any of the big games when everyone was happy and smiling after refreshments had been served tho finals began the seniors gained tho upper hand due to the spectacular play ing of louise marfan the sophs had splendid passwork throughout the con test after the games white sweaters wtih a blue b " were presented to evelyn harris and louise martaa for having made the highest number of points in two years hereafter in order to get the sweater 600 points must be made the freshman cup was presented to doris bender for high scholastic stand ing and prominence in athletics the senior team was given a cup for win ning of the basketball tournament referee for the games was mrs gret chen lee junior prom to be held april 24th at statler gala occasion promised by third year men at annual dance the mueh-looked-forward-to and long renieiubered junior prom is scheduled to come off friday april 24 in the ball room and grill room of the hotel stat ler our own cleff dwellers will fur nish the jazz thus insuring a lively evening for all the tickets including both the supper and the dance are only five dollars the committee consisting of rollin fancher chairman lou farris presi dent of the junior arts class mr has sett president of the junior lawyers matthew douglas president of the junior medics and henry wiser presi dent of the junior dents has worked hard to make this prom one of the most successful in the history of the uni versity the committee says that if any fra ternity guarantees twelve couples a section of the dining room will be re served for that fraternity on request however the fraternity must furnish its own card or banner for particu lars get in touch with rollin fancher of the law scnool watch the buffalo papers for more details enril farris has charge of the outside publicity and unusual results are looked for come one come all this is your own prom and it's up to you to carry it through the very best in the way of entertainment is offered for the most reasonable of prices one of the few ways you can really help is by your own presence the tickets were out wednesday april 1 so insure the suc cess of the prom from the very begin ning by buying as early as possible plans for new university building complete new class rooms and offices for next term dame rumor has been doing her work again — this time in connection with the proposed use of the county buildings next year nothing is defi nite but intimations which amount to convictions have been reached about the following things the county orticials intend to vacate the buildings during the summer so that by the beginning of next term the large hospital building next to science hall should be ready for oc cupancy this building will be remodeled in much the same manner as was science hall old partitions being torn out and new rooms formed in this new building will be found the administrative offices of the uni versity the chancellor the executive secretary and the dean of women will take their places here and thus relieve the congested condition at foster hall separate rooms for the professors and heads of departments and rooms for their books and supplies will prob ably be provided in the new building also there will be new class rooms to ac commodate the overflow of students from both science and foster halls a larger registration than usual is expect ed next fall by reason of the new pre law requirement of one year at arts college the new building will meet that need for more rooms humor has it that a cafeteria is also being planned but it is so indefinite that all students had better plan to con continue their diet of hamburgers with mustard and pickle for some time to come there has been a certain amount of money left to the university in chan cellor norton's will for the construc tion of a recreation hall on the cam pus dances and campus sings will then adequately be provided for this money is not available at present no specific amount of money can be mentioned as being available for the reconstruction of the county hospital all that can be said is that u b is growing spncinlly as well as every other way block b and football meetings all football men and students interested in doing their bit for the team are asked to attend a meeting at the alumni club on north street tuesday evening april 7th at 8:15 o'clock all members of the block b club are notified of an important meeting to be held immediately after the football gathering on tuesday art powell will speak and president ailinger urges that every member attend muse and masque to hold finals in speaking contest thu.se who remember the very suc cessful oratorical contest sponsored by the muse anil masque last spring will welcome the announcement that u sim ilar contest has been planned for april 16 of this year the preliminary try outs have already been held anil the judges have announced that alfred zisser kobert mcnulty paul weppner daniel kat and john maenaniara have qualified for the finals the win ners of the preliminary contest were chosen on the basis of material presen tation und general interest in the topic the orations will therefore un doubtedly be of particular interest to all the students of tho university the following list indicates the very wide range of material covered the allied wur debts alfred zisser liumsey macdonald . kobert mcnulty soviet kussia dan kntz the proposeil twentieth amend ment jomn macnamara dagniar paul weppner the judges for the final contest are dr julian park dr george buttrick of the first presbyterian church and mr hamilton ward there will be prizes offered to the two successful con testants the first prize being of fifteen and the second of ton dollars the weeks immediately following the spring vacation are tilled with inter esting events to all the undergraduates but none should be of more interest or more value to the university ns a whole than this contest the muse and masque is to be congratulated on the excellent program which has been prepared chess meeting there will be an important meeting of the t'liess club friday evening april i at 7:30 p m in the library of the dental school beportß of the committees will be read officers for next year will lie nom inated and important business for tin coming year will be discussed because of the importance of the business which will be placed before the members till should be present nt this meeting pharmics contribute to scholarship fund the senior class cf the college of pharmacy have pledged 350 to begin the willis i gregory scholarship fund it is hoped that at least 4 mi11 00 can be raised by the alumni and the stu dents pledge cards have been sent to all the alumni and the returns show that the fund is growing rapidly the i mittee in charge are dr 8 p capen honorary chairman dr a li lemon chairman miss katherine s holmes secretary the advisory committee is dr al bert p sy dr eli h long dr rich ard morgan dr win v irons dr a bertram lemon mr c merrill blown mr e b blight combined u b glee clubs to present annual concert musical program to be given at statler ball room april ijth clef dwellers and quartet leading features of large enterprise the most elaborate plans that have ever been undertaken in connection with the i b musical organization are now under way for the annual home concert and dance to be given friday evening april 17th the indi cations about the campus auger well for the success of this year's adven ture more enthusiasm is evident than ever before nud the prognosis by those who are watching this year's pro gramme is that the statler ball room will be filled to capacity students interested since there are three student units on the programme the men's glee club the girls ilee club and the cloff dwellers there is no difficulty ia finding students who are interested in at least one of the above groups the girls are working hard to solicit inter est and the boys are doing equally well each member of these three units lias given a pledge to sell at least ten tickets fraternities to co-operate the fraternities are entering whole heartedly into the plans for a huge suc cess it is expected that most of the fraternities will furnish boxes for their members and guests boxes will be an innovation and should lend a real col lege atmosphere to the occasion alumni actively interested the alumni are planning to take part in the programme by presenting for the first time an alumni male chorus the chorus is rehearsing every saturday night at the alumni club and is very enthusiastic over the coming concert a letter enclosing two tickets has been sent to tin 3000 local alumni and a liberal response is anticipated the alumni club's weekly publication known as the tatler is boosting the concert faculty to be well represented a special effort is being made to get the faculty out letters arc being sent to each member of the faculty and the deans arc using their best efforts to stimulate attendance on the part of the teaching staff a special box will be provided for members of the faculty and their friends the patrons and patronesses chancellor capen dr thurber the deans the chairman and members of the faculty s a c with their ladies have been requested to act in the above capacity a special box will lie provid ed for these honored patrons and their friends publicity a special publicity campaign has been planned and with the ro operation of the daily press it is hoped that the musical iub will r ive adequate pub licity it would seem that nothing has been overlooked in the plans which are de signed to present a concert which will make history for the undergraduate ao tivities the ball room will be beauti fully decorated the affair will be in formal tile price has been placed at 1.00 in order that every student can afford to attend dancing to the music of the let dwellers is alone worth th price of admission the arrangements arc in the
