attendance than it has m previous years , dr white speaks on religion before philosophy club meeting parallels found between religion and psychosis religion as a social psychosis was the theme of a brilliant and pene trating talk by dr leslie white at the meeting of the philosophy club last wednesday evening just as the psychosis is to the individual so is religion related to society it was an attempt to diagnose religion m the terms of psychopathology some astounding parallelisms were elaborated m this comparison of re ligion and psychosis the mental de rangement of the individual the genesis of religion was first described as equivalent to the genesis of an individual psychosis defining psychosis as a psychological avenue of escape for those who have been in capable of making the desired adjust ments dr white explained that one t the first uses of man's intellect m the paleolithic age came as a result of his helplessness his terror his longing for status he used his in tellect to deny the fact of his insig nificance and evolved the germs of the glorious anthropocentric views of the traditionary religions of the present day insofar as a psychosis gives man what he wants makes him the supreme organism m the world the term may be applied to religion thus it naturally follows that the form and content of religion will be similar to the form and content of an individual psychosis so also the psychological mechanism involved m the psychopathic person are identical with those of a religious body their reactions are the same in arguing with a paranoiac or with a funda mentalist reference to reason and fact are equally impervious even the ritual and paraphernalia of collective religion and individual psychopaths are parallel in fact the religious injunctions or taboos sacred objects holy utensils are but institu tionalized compulsions of psyco pathics collective neuroses that have each one of them had individual gene sis m the mind of some influential neurotic u b debate wins unanimous decision over princeton team princeton coach praises arguments and presentation the men's debate tour through eastern pennsylvania and new jer sey was the most a nd dependencies at susquehanna university febru ary 25th the u b debaters lost a 1 judges decision the plea of our opponents for conservative national ism was quite convincing to the , judges the next night february 26th at allentown pa the buffalo team up , holding the negative of the disarma ment issue received a well earned judges decision over the debaters of muhlenberg college a team recently successful against the forensic repre sentatives from oxford university this debate was certainly the most keenly contested engagement on the tour although anticipating a keen de bate the buffalo team was certain that the arguments of the princeton team could be successfully coped with on february 27th buffalo and prince ton universities met for the first time on the forensic platform the prince tonians upheld the negative of the disarmament question a unique feature of the debate was that only one rebuttal was given by each side the buffalo case was superbly pre sented by melvin j weig a single judge vote gave the de cision to buffalo the princeton debate coach highly complimented the university of buf campus calendar friday march 7 — 4:15 p.m — honors group meeting miss r
