opena its 1928-1024 court season ou de cember 12th when it stacks up against the strong rochester mechanics insti tute combination though three letter men are lost from last year's team coach art powell is hopeful of a suc ii'ssful season with tho new material that ho has developed captain lou farris will occupy one forward berth ami the other will be taken care of by hob cantor or henry wciser hrisdle will start at center and the guard posi tions will be taken care of by bob pot ter matt mayer ami culp coach art powell has about the niftiest looking bunch of court men that one might ask for every night they keep i lie old ball busy at the ro tary gym vets frosh of last year and bard working newcom ers all are plugging with a direct purpose in mind we till know what that is included among the men of last season are bobble cantor culp wciser lou parries bill and bob potter and mat mayer they promise some real life sending the old pill through the basket during the coining season many will remem ber the brilliancy of these men from last year and what about this season now we turn to the frosh of 24 and we see lewis gabby guillaumc and stairet plugging along at a good clip all show a wealth of pep and plenty of enthusiasm other members of the squad seeking berths are otto brizdel former la fayette h s star thomas haru doty farron bass who starred at hutch starber scherinan rosengren home and brint a man from syracuse central these fellows are all lively many of them hail from high schools where they won their spins from such a squad art powell will be able to pick a quintet capable of disposing of those who have it b as objective nearly all arc nn i experience some having a couple of years of varsity berths to their credt a hard schedule awaits the team that is finally chosen and they will be able to meet it in the way we expect and want were going to be support ing a winning team this season boost your team men's debate team chosen tryouts for the men's debating team were held monday november 17 at townsend hall the judges were pro fessor lemon ami justin morgan of the eleven candidates six were chosen joseph brownstein john horton dan iel katz johnmonamara hubert mc nulty and boswell rosengren each spoke five minutes on one side or the other of the question resolved that the clause of the johnson bill excluding the japanese be repealed all the speeches were well-prepared and well given due to the fact that they hold de grees messrs rosengren and mcnulty will not be able to participate in the hobart debate since hobart being only an arts college bars degree men against other universities they will be available mr bosengren is manager in place of mr salacitse who recently resigned negotiations are now under way with various schools but as yet no definite arrangements have been made hush hall new student news service last reports have it that hush hall yale's phantom campus dorm itory the digging of a foundation for which roused the whole campus is now under discussion of the faculty whose report will have a part in deciding its fate see new student nov 8 debate club meets tonight a regular debate club meet ing has been called for this evening thursday december 4th at 8 o'clock at townsend nail alt members are urged to be present tho program committee promises a lively de bate to follow the business meet ing arts alumni to hold luncheon saturday the arts alumni association will hold a luncheon this saturday decem ber 6th at 12:311 o'clock at reickerts ten room on delaware ave the mem bers of the faculty are invited informal discussion of the plans of the association for the coming year will be part of the program the officers of tlie arts alumni as sociation arc president mr champlin vice-president miss rief treasurer horace guthrie secretary miss ulrich mr greenwood mrs bmering and miss kemnicrs are the hoard of direc tors mr templeton conval escing mr irving templeton who v;is so seriously hurt q short chancellor the deans and tho professors will be present and are prepared lo discuss any general mat ters or particular problems which have confronted women strrderrts or their parents in connection with the work at the university foster arrd science halls wil be operr for inspection anil faculty members as well as students will bo orr band to act as guides anil to explairr any of the functions of build ings or campus the reception which will bo most informal in character will be at about eight o'clock and it is hoped that all the women of the col lege will attend and bring their par ent u of b students invited to hear famous japanese first presb church plans u b function sunday an unusual university function is planned for sunday afternoon decem ber 7ih at the first presbyterian church to which all university of buf falo strrdents and faculty members are invited dr tsurumi one of the most remarkable of japanese figures is to lie tin speaker in inviting all i of b students tho first presbyterian church desires to make the occasion a real university function and will entertain the students with refreshments after the address dr yusupe tsurumi will speak on the import of the immigration bill on japanese life students who are among the first lo hie called upon irr time of wai 1 should be especially in terested in tho question of our rela tions with other nations out of which wars may arise the whole question of the exclusion and discrimination in re gard to japanese immigration is orre of the utmost interest to the people of this nation chancellor capen and the deans are very much interested in the project the invitation is a generous one for many reasons moreover the occasions on which the entire university carr as semble are so few that this most de sirable opportunity should be takerr full advantage of dr daniel h squire dean of tho dental school is very enthusiastic in his support of this meeting arrd has urged the dental stu dents to bo there dr tsurumi is one of the outstand ing figures iu the liberal young japan a son-in-law of viscount goto ami well endowed with the world's goods he has nevertheless turned away from tho great commercial opportunities open to him to give his services to public and patriotic affairs he came to america to deliver a series of addresses before tho institute of politics at williams town massachusetts and is now occu pied iu a series of led ores at the uni versities of harvard vale columbia dartmouth princeton and pennsyl vania tho vigorous and inquiring spirit of young japan could hardly find a spokesman better qualified than dr tsurumi to interpret its objects and hopes to young america opportunities to hear men of this sort are so rare that the university is indebted to tho first presbyterian church for its generous invitation the failure of students to attend would cer tainly not contribute to the good name of the university of buffalo so re member the time ami place this sun day afternoon at b o'clock at the first presbyterian church in the circle dean park continues faculty lectures with illustrated talk on french cathedrals we may live without architecture anil worship name romanesque held sway for 180 years when in the middle of the 12th century it was superseded by tho architecture which we call gothic gothic architecture did not spring up liko a mushroom like all manifestations of art it was the logical fulfillment of its predecessor the first problem of these 12th century builders was how to protect their churches by masonry vaulting without sacrificing amplitude or lighting out of their trials to solve that problem emerged a new principle of construc tion and gothic architecture was then burn by means of diagonal-crossing ribs the vertical and lateral thrusts of tile stone roof were collected at fixed points which points alone had to be counterbutted thick walls wee a necessity in a romanesque edifice if it were to bo stable but in a gothic building the walls could be made a mere shell since all the work was done by an active skeleton a bone structure of stone consisting of piers arches and buttresses dr park illustrated his talk with lantern slides and pointed out the characteristic beauties of the different cathedrals throughout france bison head stage dance in honor of grid men honorary society to hold function on december 13th u b clef dwellers to furnish music for hop a university football dance in horr or of the 1h24 grid men will be held december l.lth in the ballroom of tha hotel buffalo by the bison head sen ior society last year efforts by bison head to stage a football dance were urr successful because dates on tho social calendar were unavailable petition by bison head to the s a c and dean macdonald to run a dance every fall for the football men has been approved and this year will witness the first bison head football dance it b clef dwellers the jazz orches tra of the university will furnish the music for the occasion this orchestra has improved wonderfully during the past year arrd is becoming increasingly popular wherever they have played out of town they have met with nothing but tho highest of praise the bison head would rather patronize university talent than import at great ex be or ehestras with press agented reputat ions bison head in its petition to the s a c for the football dance asked that such a university function become part of its annual endeavor so that in the future a football dance will be run every fall by the honorary society tickets are l\r>0 per couple jim ailinger chairman of the dance com mittee is in charge of their distribu tion at dentistry they can lie obtain ed from milton hager arthyr cross or jim ailirrger at the medical school the class presidents have tickets lor sale at the law school they ean be obtained from willard magavern or torn qanin at arts from the class presidents or dan katz and nt pharm acy from jean ken or earnest walk er tic bison head is the senior men's honorary society of the university membership is reserved for those stud ents who have done the most for student activities throughout their college ca reer it was first established in the spring of 1928 arrd twelve charter mem bers were selected by the faculty they were howard mccordock kenefick wende herbert helwig george bar one otto willax oeorge atwater lewis bradley james i'regolette harry yorke walter davies lewis stewart arid daniel i o'xeil last year's group comprised harold meese president sam vanini vice president lustin morgan secretary bernard wakefield treasurer carlton roberts tom ganin and chester wallace the present members are milton linger president jim ailinger vice-president arthur cross secretary dan katz ami willard magavern dean park attends association meeting dean park represented the univer sity of buffalo at a two day session of the association of college and prepar atory schools of the middle states and maryland in washington 1 c friday and saturday november 28 and 20th the meeting elected chancellor capen vice-president of lhe association bet ter preparation of students for college wtis discussed by the association dean herbert hawkes of columbia college read a paper on the use of intelli gence tests in selecting freshmen o rifle club the members of the rifle squad en joyed a lay-off over the holiday — no practice being held last thursday at tho last practice held the squad was put at shooting in a different posi tion previously all shooting had been done in the prone position but at this practice session they were put in the sitting position of course being cramped up and trying to hit a bulls eye isn't the most pleasant thing in the world but all are determined to be able to hit the mark in that position iis well as others nearly all of the same squad are sticking every man is determined to make a position on the team front now on every man will do his best it is expected that the new winchest er guns will be here for the next meeting and then things will begin to hum the new rides are the best 22 gun on the market and much is expected of them books received by college library the college library has been open tuesday and thursday evenings until ten o'clock during the past few weeks an average of seven or eight students have taken advantage of this opportun ity the georgian room of the hotel statler on monday no vember 24 his subject was our i'niversity mrs wm f ehmann was general chairman anil mis slight chairman of program girls glee club the girls glee club which up until now has been just a name is beginning to materialize mr ward and rutli gold-berg have been instrumental in or ganizing the club last week a meeting was held at which elaine rubery was elected chair man there are lots of girls who are interested in a glee club and so when the try outs were held such a lot came out that all could not be taken care of but mr ward did his best and the rest will have a week longer to practice their high s mr ward has wonderful plans for the club and is interested in giving concerts this winter if the girls only equal mr ward in their enthusiasm and interest a very creditable girl's glee club is assured a letter man's spirit never dies our advertisers are buffalo's best patronize them
