the bee university of buffalo february 28 1930 no 17 vol 10 dr meiklejohn in instructive talk at convocation 32 students receive degrees at ceremonies universities must determine the ways of triumphing over human stu pidity and finding the true path of life thus dr alexander meiklejohn dean of the experimental college at the university of wisconsin conclud ed his address delivered at the thirti eth annual university day convoca tion on washington's birthday the convocation at which 32 students re ceived degrees was held in edmund hayes hall at the beginning of the speech dr meiklejohn outlined the three main purposes of an ideal educational sys tem he stated that an educational system should be vocational people should be given a love of learning for its own sake and it should include an attempt to prepare people to deal with the difficulties of the world if a school or college is to play its proper part it must prepare young people for a vocation the reason is that there is work to be done in the world and every human being should take part in it a person not doing some work in the common good is a quitter persons should have a love of learning as a joyous activity learn ing is the best game of life apart from the arts there is no other game so satisfying emphasis must be placed upon the preparation of people in learning to ' deal with world problems because thinking is such an unnatural opera ' tion for the human he must be ' driven to it the speaker then pointed out the shortcomings of modern education '' he showed that present-day methods ' are not really winning students in col lege ideas given to students do not transform or inspire them these e ideas are merely present like goods in ' a stock room the wisconsin dean also discussed ■several problems that he believed the university should solve among others were the fact that modern america admires rather than loves education ; and supports it blindly and the situ g ntion whereby some spend their lives y in ease and others in enjoyment i c am not looking for easy remedies 1 he declared but for sound vital in a telligent thinking v preceding the main speaker chan d cellor capen praised the personality c f washington and the traditions for n which he stood maintaining that the g popular estimate of the world's great c personalities is generally in the end g correct he showed how the veils = which obscure the true characters of men gradually become transparent a real king is an act of god and i king in this sense washington was the more so that he labored to re move the influence of thrones from this nation rather than to occupy one women debaters meet elmira club tonight women's debate club will meet the debate club of elmira college fri day february 28th at the
