the bee no 21 vol iv university of buffalo march 21 1924 sororities hold stunt night at townsend hall varied and interesting presentations mark entertainment a tremendous success was the verdict given by those who attended stunt night given by the pan-hel lenic council last saturday night at townsend hall everyone was tilled with pep and enthusiasm and the amateur presentations were received with appreciation mildred wheaton acted as chair man of the a.ffair and gracefully intro duced each sorority as they made ready to give their offering an excellent production was given by aotii tau sorority in the form of a shadow play called the ballad of the oyster-alan by oliver wendell holmes ida juenther sang the bal lad accompanied by the ukelele janet whitley and grate lee played the hero and heroine whose shadows are 6ten on opposite cliffs the attempt of the hero to swim across to his beloved heroine was frustrated by the appearance of the father a role taken by edna fischer heart-broken the hero jumps unto the water to be followed by hi9 sweetheart and they live happily ever after — at the bot tom o the sea neither romance nor action were lacking in the stunt given by sigma kappa beautiful belinda was read by mildred mabee and portrayed by a cast including jasmine hardleben as belinda ada stanley the villian rebecca dane the hero ; annabelle l-'aulds the father the hours by vir ginia fairbanks and constance volk the happy hour by dorothy day the mother by mabel schoeplin belinda is upset by the sudden ap pearance of the villian her hero however rescues her and they plan tj marry the marriage ceremony was performed by grace heacock and the couple were sent off amid tears and laughter phi bigma was ably represented by belle and anna maisel they appeared in beautiful costumes of spanish type and danced the tango the rhythm and away caught the atten tion of the audience and held them until the end the dancers were ac companied by frances levy ethel piucus announced the mini bers on the program presented by bigma delta tau parodies were ffiven on the dolly sisters by ann ette arnson and evelyn levy a reci tation by miriam eichler on so briety and a concert toy rachmani noff by evelyn harris the big fea ture was tho brown brothel jazz orchestra by seven of the girls marion coplon annette arnson eve lyn levy pearl seigel miriam eich ler freda ballatin and elizabeth buff they showed pep and jazz and made quite a hit an eskimo tragedy was pre st'iued by pi kappa phi and was acted in pantomine while edith bar urn read the sad story the eskiman and eskimaid played by rosemary ltiehardson and helen bell were hold ing a prolonged modern necking party under the eskimoon when a jealous wretch the eskimurderer played by helen sloan appeared he violently put an end to the bcenß the faithful eskipup helen oeehler wobbled upon the scene and devoured the murderer thus the play ended in deep gloom alpha gamma delta was next in line with the humorous tragedy of mr and mrs macbeth the cast in cluded tho three witches by leva wallace adelaide gander and edith qrupe mr macbeth by barbara kimberely mrs macbeth by alice livingstone and malcom by edith grupe macbeth and his wile are being mentally deranged by the hor ror of the murder of duncan their speeches in verse form evoked much merriment from the audience — humor was in abundance here the future position of the female doctor was very well given by mem bers of nu sigma phi medical snror ity the scene was laid in the office of the she-doctor one after another tho patients were brought in to be cured as it were by magic the weak ness of the doctors of the opposite sox was portrayed by the fainting scene caused by the sight of blood the audience was surely convinced of the superiority of the female doc tor theta chi presented an original musical tragedy entitled belling the bell-hops alice langworthy wrote the play and gwendolyn douffhton the accompanying bongs harriet montague as froggle king of the bell-hops was planning to steal the jewels of the princess irene played by dorothy bucklin his attempts were futile because of double-crossing by froggie's sweetie played by jose phine little the bell-hop chorus included adelaide hazel ruth petrie winifred rowley margaret whyte and katherine williams beta phi's fashion show was quite lantern club holds st patrick dance tho lanu-rn club st patrick dance held at tv hotel statler monday eve ning mareh 17th was an immense suc cess over oue hundred and fifty couple attended many of whom inquired when the next lantern club dance would bfl given dancing was continued into the wee small hours of tho morning when every one went home in the conventional toed and happy state green carnations wove tho st patrick favors and all the ladies had thereof iris contest nets more subscriptions the third subscription drive and the advertising campaign which the iris turned over to the co-eds are progressing with all-that-can-be wlshed-for speed to date nearly fifty new subscriptions have been reporteu by those girls who are working on them fifteen girls are busy secur ing ads and when their report is made on march 22 the great amount of real work done by co-eds in under graduate activity will be manifest there are altogether twenty-one girls working in the contest for a place in the contributors section of the iris which honor is granted the highest third contestants by means of points awarded for each new sub scription and ad that they secure the iris has granted an extension of time for the contest so that the closing date will be saturday march 22 at that time the highest third will be detremined but will not be dis closed to the student body until the publishing of the annual in may u b chess team to meet penn u at philadelphia city college of new york to be met on same trip the university of buffalo chess team will wind up its season with a trip to philadelphia where they will l;ii against tho university of pennsylvania an institution which ranks high in th intercollegiate chess world from there the fj b toam will go to xew york to play the city college of new york chess team the city college chess players defeat ed columbia university in the sixth round of the annual intercity champion ship series of the metropolitan chess league city college won five of the eight games e tholyspn of city col lego holds the championship of the marshal chess club and that organ ization holds tho championship title of the country considering the fact that columbia won the intercollegiate tourn ament this year and city college de feated columbia not much imagina tion is necessary to furtell the result of the v b vs city college game nevertheless the u b players are not i a bit discouraged and hope to present stiff opposition to their much stronger opponents while in new york the u b chess players will attend the international chess tournament which is now being held it is perhaps the greatest inter national chess tournament ever held chess champions from all over the world participate in this tournament tho u b chess club although still in its infancy is making splendid prog ress some of the most prominent local and out of town chess teams sought to play the u 88 boys but were unable to land a place on the u b schedule this year by all indications the u b chess club will have an extensive schedule and a championship team for next year u b girls to hike with field and trail club this saturday the w a a hikcr will join with tho field and trail club of the buffalo society of natural sciences we will hike from the end of geneseo car line across the country to snyder meet at public library building at 1:11(1 p in let's all come lit and show tho club our university spirit university debating team meets union college at schenectady next friday tho university of buffalo opens de bating relations with union college on march 2sth when a u b debate team meets a debate team representing union at bchenectady buffalo will uphold the negative of the question resolved that the three per cent immigration law be re-enacted the team represent hi the university in this debate i composed of fred devlin captain julius goldstein robert mcxulty and martin l'hillips alternate tho debate with i'liion is the first out-of-town debate this year and an agreement has been made with that in ititution whereby a return debate will bo held in buffalo borne time next your union is known as one of the strong est of tho small colleges in new york state in all undergraduate activities nor is debating an exception for union has been markedly successful in her past forensic contests tho u b team although it has not had tho advantage of all the time nec essary for exhausting such a large sub ject as immigration goes to schenec tady well prepared to present a for midable case against the re-enactment of tho three per cent law fred devlin captain of the team represented tho university last year against hobart col lege when hobart lost 1 3 to 0 decillon to u b on the question of cancella tion of the allied war debt he also represented the entire student body in welcoming chancellor oapen on behalf of the students at the 1!>:;3 university day exercises robert mcnulty al though debating for the first time for the blue and white is a debater of much experience mr mcnulty cap tained hobart a team in its bto 1 vic tory over u b three years ago julius goldstein ims twice represented flu 1 university in intercollegiate debating three years ago lie was a member i the team that met hobart and last fall mr goldstein again faced a hoba tpam which incidentally lost to rj n « to 0 the next intercollegiate forensic con test following the union debate will take place i geneva on april nth when a team composed of the girls of the debate club meet a team representing williams smith college this will be the first time in tin history of the uni versity that a team c posed of tj b girls will represent it in an intercoi legiate debate not nil eo-educatlonal institutions can li<ia*t of women ilebat lag teams and the_very active part taken by the girls nt u of b in de bating brings credit to their university u of b will defend the affirmative of the soldiers bonus question in this debate the girls chosen to rep resent the university are kuth goldberg captain elizabeth roberts selma lear man and charlotte macaleer alternate miss goldberg and miss learman an experienced debaters who have lieei in the debate club for three years al though this is the first debate for mist roberts and miss macaleer they an both aide speakers and the university will be represented by a well balanced team it is interesting to note thai in everj intercollegiate debate in which u b has taken part the team representing the university was composed of an equal number of law and an equal number of arts men curiously enough in the coming intercollegiate contests with union williams smith anil xew york univeraity there are twelve stu dents representing v if 8 six of whom are from law and six of whom ore from arts pharos club party on march 22nd tlie pharos club is holding hs st patrick party at townsend hall ni ngara square on saturday march 22ml the girls will gather at 8:00 p m ami expect to have a rolicking good time with panics and lunch and what nut miss langennan is chairman of a oommlttee in charge of the party and has as her helpers miss mutschler miss keeman and miss edna peterson there is absolutely no charge fur admittance and all evening session women are invited and urged to attend see you saturday evening at tin party is the girls slogan this week seniors entertain sophomores at tea tile benior o'clock a short program was presented which included a reading by miss jasmine ilarcllelion of the clas of 1925 and a dance by miss emma kllis of t!u freshman class bach wr extremely clever in her own line ami added much to the pleasure of the oc easion the receiving line included miss mil dred wheaton miss anna buckham and miss sadie gamier vice president secretary and treasurer respectively if the seninr class miss sadie gamier miss mollie jones and miss grace lieu cock formed the committee in charge dr osborne speaker atu.b club meeting the leaching of sex hygiene bat changed since the days before the war when it was but a teaching of fright fulness dr karl 1 osborne of the medical school faculty stated last tues day evening in a talk on sex hygiene to the members of tlie u b club
