the bee vol io university of buffalo february 21 1930 no 16 junior prom tonight looms as social highlight of season senior bison head group to tap new members tonight at 10 p m the juniors will usher in the highlight of the social season att he hotel statler the juniors on this night of nights will welcome their other classes in this memorable celebration the junior prom dan murphy and musical skippers will furnish the music in a superbly decorated ballroom the favors a de light to every girl will be presented as a souvenir of this event a special junior dance with tapping by bison head senior men's honorary society as well as novelty acts during intermission will also feature the evening the tickets at 5.00 a couple are well worth the price and the committee promises all a superb time a prominent list of patrons will also attend those included are chancellor and mrs samuel p capen dean lillias m macdonald dr and mrs julian park dr and mrs ed ward w koch dean and airs carlos c alden dean willis g gregory dean clarence s marsh mr and mrs walter p cooke mr and mrs george d crofts mr and mrs philip becker goetz mr and mrs william h crosby mr and mrs seymour h knox and mr and mrs john lord o'brian blue masquers daily rehearse three-act play rehearsals of the three-act play that blue masquers will present in the late spring are becoming more active daily the cast of the ro mantic age though large is enthus iastic a a milne has proved so popular as a writer of children's stories that his imaginative portrayal of flaming romance is sure to appeal to a college audience the settings are being prepared to scale under the direction of sheldon vide who designed the sets used in tho broadway production the op portunity of learning real stage tech nique from a professional has been eagerly taken by men who are inter ested in production as a background to a more intensified dramatic skill as well as those primarily interested in stagecraft the present members of the cast me katherine mosier edward siemer mary louise nice edward krug robert millonzi joseph abeles muriel mclean richard leone and ealean henderson junior-senior theatre party tomorrow night the junior-senior theater party to morrow night according to all re ports will be a fitting party for the closing of junior week the juniors will entertain the seniors at the little theater which presents at a midnight show greta garbo and lars hanson in the story of goesta berling each junior boy inviting a senior girl and the junior girls in company with the senior men will attend and make merry at this affair the tickets are 1.00 per person and the seniors have received their complimentaries thus making the cost 1.00 per couple so don't forget saturday night at 12 o'clock the theater party at the little theater men's glee club sing at third college tea the college tea to be given at the first presbyterian church next sun day evening is the third in a series for students of the state teachers college and of the university of buf falo supper will be served immed iately after the five o'clock commun ity vesper service and dr edward a steiner of grinnell college will ans wer questions from the students allan knight chalmers will conduct the questionnaire the men's glee club of the uni versity of buffalo will present the program of music at the vesper ser vice dr steiner's tribute to chancellor capen the resignation of john lord o'brian very prominent attorney from the university of buffalo coun cil the appointment of mr jacob l sehoellkopf jr to fill the unexpired term the plea of chancellor capen for a most careful economy and an numeration of the university's needs by treasurer george d crofts fea tured the council meeting tuesday afternoon in dr capen's offices mr o'brian who has been a mem b^r of the council for the past quar ter century tendered his resignation to accept his recent election to the state board of regents concluding a ''; tinguished service with the univer s|ty mr schoellkopf an outstanding figure in the city was named by the council to conclude mr o'brian's term which expires in 1933 mr louis 1 j babcock merited lawyer was selected ' to succeed mr o'brian as attorney for the university tribute to chancellor the council presided over by chair man walter p cooke paid rare and unparalleled tribute to chancellor capen in the following resolution resolved that the members of the council of the university of buf falo extend to samuel p capen their thanks and grateful appreciation of the manifold services he has rendered this community since his inauguration as chancellor in 1922 under his wise and far-seeing leadership this institution has grown in academic stature from a university in name to a university in fact and is chairman of experimental college university of wisconsin conferring of degrees in course alma mater song benediction dr meiklejohn is a renowned edu cator and lecturer previous to his chairmanship of the experimental college at the university of wiscon sin dr meiklejohn was president of amherst college and dean of brown university he is one of the foremost thinkers in reorganizing the objec tives of american colleges and will speak on various experimental pro grams developed for the improvement of learning at leading institutions of tho country nine different degrees will be pre sented graduates are from the col leges of arts and sciences medicine business administration and the evening session the pharmacy dentistry and law schools have no candidates for degrees at the mid year wednesday february 26 dr spaeth is a famous music critic author lecturer and en tertainer and will give the assembly one of his internationally famed re citals and lectures it is a great privilege to hear this famous entertainer so well known in musical and radio centers and it is through the greatest efforts of dr thurber that he has consented to come here students who attended the summer session of 1928 will recall that dr spaeth kept them highly entertained for an entire hour the auditorium was full to overflowing with standing room at a premium dr spaeth needs no recommenda tion we are assured of an excep tional treat especially since the con vocation period will last fifty minutes parents and guests are cordially in vited to enjoy this delightful enter tainment dr a zimmern expounds cares of new democracy the second lecture by dr zimmern expanded the bases of the new democ racy in a concrete form the new system although aristi cratic in form provides greater op portunities for democracy the actual participation of the people in some form of public service is essential the individual must make a real con tribution to government politics must be forensic encounters set for foreign fields during the past few weeks at the london disarmament conference the advocates of complete disarmament have been brought to the realization that a round table discussion is quite inadequate to lead to a final solution of the problem the vitality of pub lic opinion is lacking an element nec essary to vitiate the haunting fear of future war to muzzle the recalcitrant war dogs intercollegiate forensic organiza tions throughout the country have recognized the part which they can play in stimulating opinion on the in kational problem by impartially de ig both sides of the issue the university of buffalo the s debating team are exclusively ting the disarmament question on february 2oth at susquehanna university and february at princeton university messrs melvin j weig elmer tropman and emil cohen will uphold the affirmative of the question resolved that all na tions shall immediately completely disarm each government maintaining only such military and naval force as may be necessary for the maintenance of order in the respective countries and dependencies at muhlenberg college february 28th the same buffalo team will de bate the negative of the same ques tion a series of home debates with rut gers university and greenville col lege illinois also on the disarma ment issue have been scheduled by manager gustavo a nuermberger
