the bee vol iv university of buffalo february 28 1924 no 18 crippled varsity faces lafayette quintet tonight blue and white determined to end season with victories art powell's university of buffalo basketball five engages the strong la fayette college quintet at the elmwood hall on friday evening as the first of the two home game this week which round out the 1923-11)24 u b basket ball schedule in the visitors the blue and while will undoubtedly encounter the stiffest opposition lafayette college boats a big rangy aggregation of veteran la fayette grid talent who have combined a natural court ability with the tough ness and rigor of the gridiron to pro duce a fast punishment-assimilating court organization the maroon boasts a lineup of well recognized lumniaries who have been contributing their talents to the com a cause to produce one of the most formidable court organizations of the i'ennsylvanian institution captain rate a junior at lafayette plays one of the forward positions and is rated as the main cog in the maroon scoring machine last fall this husky played rarsity 011,1 with the maroon eleven dur ing the whole grid season dully n sophomore was regular tackle on the football team and jumps center for the court representation millman also a sophomore played right halfback with the varsity eleven and at present is lafayette's main de fensive threat by reasi f former performances millman made all-state basketball guard in new jersey a few years hack hock a new man who has just shown promise in 10 nit games bos by reason of such lino perfor mances replaced moore at the forward berth moore who has been a regular backflleld performer on the grid squad will however hold himself in readiness tor an opportunity to display his wares and will undoubtedly have such oppor tunity before friday's game is over lafayette engages buffalo as one of the opponents on a western tour in ivhich they took ou rochester on wed nesday and niagara on thursday and then continuing with lehigh on satur day after the local tilt here on friday evening in addition to these invasions the maroon visit bucknell and penn state next week where they will at tempt to demonstrate the late season form such as tho locals will encounter on friday the visitors have been unusually suc cessful in attempting to maintain one of the stillest schedules ever prepared for any previous maroon court squad the confinement of coach bill auder sni in the hospital with a case of blood poisoning from october ist until christmas did much to slow up the bpeed of the easton hoopsters and in view of their present form accounts in some measure for some of the losses suffered during this period the maroon has defeated rutgers 27 tu 19 cooper union b8 to 88 swath more 33 to 12 and university of brook lyn 30 to 25 the visitors have lost to rutgers 20 to 33 catholic university of washing ton 18 to 24 georgetown 12 to 27 navy 23 to 47 penn 10 to 27 pittsburgh 17 to 18 muhlenberg 10 to 28 washing ton and jefferson 18 to 18 and lehigh 20 to 33 all in all friday s contest should provo one of tho fastest exhibitions of superb court artistry ever presented at tho dramatics have at last really gotten under way and a school play this year seems assured at a dramatic meeting held last tuesday evening at townsend hall plans were formulated for starting work immediately tow ard staging a play in may tho next meeting will be held tuesday evening march 4th at townsend hall and all those in terested are urged to attend at this meeting it is planned to se lect the play which the society will put on whether or not a school play can bo carried through to a successful conclu sion this year depends upon the number of students who are ac tively interested the meeting next tuesday is open to all stu dents and unless a largo number turn out for it dramatics at the university of buffalo may die a tragic death w a a plans hike on saturday the woman s athletic association is going to get the best of old lack frost and have another hike on saturday march ist a good number of girls have already signified their intention of going and others are urged to join them and form a jolly crowd meet at foster hall at 1:30 p m and hike to williamsville speaking contest finals at hutch on march 12th law school places most men in muse and masque tryouts the try-outs for tho public speak ing contest for tho university which is being conducted by tho muse and masque were very well supported con sidering that this is the first time that the demosthenes of our university have been called forth in actual competition tho judges choose from 12 contestants as being tlfe best qualified to speak in tho finals the following mr hns-elt mr horton mr mcnulty mi phil lips mr goldstein and miss roberts on tho night of wednesday march 12 in tho auditorium of hutchinson cen tral high school these six speakers will competo for the prizo offered by tho members of the muse and masque mr hassett has a eulogy of wood row wilson mr horton speaks on a sane internationalism mr mc nulty finds an outlet for his eloquence in a plan for peace mr phillips sees in the vermin in the dark the greatest danger to america not in her troubles abroad mr goldstein had a serious discussion of a great danger which confronts america today in the possibility of a legislative autocracy tho importance of selecting one's right vocation is the title of mis robert's speech tho final contest to determine the winners will bo held march 1 2th at hutchinson high school the stu dents faculty and fiiends of the uni versity aro invited to attend an en joyable evening is in store for those who do because in addition to tho speeches there will bo several excellent musical numbers on tho program chan cellor capen adelbert moot and dean alden will act as judges of the final contest at the tryouts the judges were mr brenner mr stoner and dr morgan federated alumni association holds tenth annual dinner at statler university day " but though time shall furrow our faces and threaten our temples with gray allegiance til care still displaces the old love that thrills us today " amid reminiscences of tho happy golden by gone days the federated alumni association of the university of buffalo hold its tenth annual dinner in the chinese room of the statler hotel on friday evening february 22 at seven p m president lewis introduces l>r capen derail l lewis jr m a ll 8 89 president of the association was tho presiding officer immediately fol lnwin the dinner the annual business meeting of the organization was held the main business of tho evening was tho election of dr nelson g russell as tho federated alumni leprsentutive to tho athletic council of the university dr nelson g russell succeeds dr nel son w strohni whoso untiring services have helped make athletics successful in tho university of huffalo in introducing chancellor capen as first speaker of the evening mr lewis paid tribute to his educational work chancelor capen was extended a rous ing wecome by the alumni and told what tho university is doing in an educa tional way honors courses experiment this is ho said 11 period of experimentation in education our most conspicuous experiment is the evening session which is merely mi adventure in community service a great part of our evening work is unorthodox however it has brought to hundreds of persons what they want and what they need but what they could nut othi 1 vise obtain our possibilities for use fulness in this division are unlimited educationally except by space mid re sources however we must not forget that its unique an l successful develop men is due to its its leader demi marsh debate club meets next thursday the debate club will hold its next regular meeting thursday evening march bth at townsend hall meetings of the club have been few and far between be cause of tryouts for varsity teams mid because of meetings oi varsity teams in preparation for intercollegiate debates tho subject for discussion at this meeting will be resolved that congress was justified in asking for tho resignation of secretary denby it is planned to have informal discussion fol low the regular debate between two teams members new or old are urged to attend iris will conduct popularity contest for pretty co-eds it is the common practice among all tho better college annual to have a so called popularity section this section is made up of beautiful individual photographs of many co-eds printed in rotogravure style with ela borate border and background designs producing a section of keenest interest nl ling beauty to the book and giving credit to those who deserve it selections for the wink is based upon a
