meetings next wednesday b evening at 7:30 in the mil-b lard fillmore lounge bb^h the purpose of thisß meeting is to have the i staff members staff edi-b tors and editorial board b meet freshmen and trans b fer students and have al general get - together i over coffee in future b meetings the same ideaß will be followed but moreß time will be devoted tob working out closer co-b ordination also the h rights and wrongs in news writing will be stressed the editorial board hopes through these meetings to share with the fenfire staff the problems and achievements of the spectrum homer baker copy editor of the buffalo evening news and advisor to the spectrum will speak on the topic what is a newspaper james riley editor-publisher and fred fisher managing editor will outline the spectrum's role on campus homer baker advisor left fred fisher managing editor standing and jim riley editor will speak at the first staff get-together wednesday important dates for students med school the medical school admissions test is to be given on campus oct ober 31 monday important deadline for filing applications to princeton new jersey is october 17 application blanks are avail able in the offices of the dean of students 192 hayes students who plan to apply to any medical school for the fall 1956 term are ad vised to take this test now no sec ond administration of this test is scheduled at present • • • law school the law school admissions test is to be given on campus november 12 saturday deadline for appli cations in princeton is november 1 application blanks will soon be available in 192 hayes hall a fur ther notice will appear in the spectrum when these arrive all students who plan to apply to any law school for next fall are advised to register for the test at this time the next buffalo testing date is not until february ' 18 • • • selective service selective service examination is to be given on campus november 17 thursday all male students is years or older are strongly ad vised to register for this test whether or not they are enrolled in rotc successfully passing this vtest is another way of insuring con tinued status as a college student no application blanks are as yet available watch for future an nouncement in the spectrum concerning these construction of a 96-family apart ment colony for cornell university married students began this fall on the ithaca campus one of the largest increases in an alumnae fund in the united states has been reported by mac murray college jacksonville 111 with the fund rising from 800 in 1954 to a total of 44,160 this year students and faculty participate in revision of governing rody for 20 years the board of man agers has been without a true form of student government in that fac ulty members have had a part ln every decision that has been made this feeling that has prevailed among many students was brought forth during a two-day workshop conducted by the board dr jack deeringer dean of student affairs opened the discussion by asking the students on behalf of the fac ulty to help determine what part they would like to play in the grow ing of our university under the chairmanship of har old reiss opinions of 45 campus leaders were focused upon the problems of the responsibility of student government among these proibl e m s the following were stressed a greater interest in stu dent government a much improved communication between students and their government an im proved attitude towards campus politics provision for continuity between student government and student government elect a student leadership program and a system of student standards for extra-cur ricular participation one of the general feelings of the group was that a new student gov erning system should be estab lished a student governing body to be called the student senate and a union programming commit tee to be called the board of man agers these two bodies would have the power to send representatives to the building athletic financial curricular and rules committees of the university the workshop closed on a final important note by sal corrallo students today must become aware of problems facing the world this can be achieved by thinking intellectually through student government frosh will re chosen queen at homecoming game october 8 one of the 1955 incoming fresh 5 man girls will be crowned queen of homecoming next friday in nor ton at a rally the selection will be made by the football team and three other judges at the half time of the annual homecoming game the queen and her court will be presented the homecoming committee comprised of members of the campus open house expects to have as much spirit as was exhib ited at the rally before the cort land game the evening will begin in norton with the selection of the queen followed by a torch dance around campus a huge bonfire on the baseball diamond will be the main event dr furnas the cheer leaders and the football team will also be on hand applications for the queen must include name address phone num ber and the school in which she is enrolled they are to be turned into the candy counter no later than 12:00 wednesday greater enrollment by fred fisher 10,212 registered increase oi 761 9 new classrooms ready in hayes the enrollment of students here on campus has increased over last year according to figures released by the registrar's office com piled up to and including tuesday of this week 10.212 students have registered an increase of 761 this includes all schools and the millard fillmore college many students apparently feel that enrollment has reached the point of overflow this is certainly not the case miss emma deters university registrar explains that there was a greater enrollment just following the end of world war 11 due in large to the number of servicemen taking advantage of the gi bill at that time a strain was put on the university but a supportable one this is heartening considering that entering the snack bar there have been some changes made since you left school last may a plan to renovate the snack bar this summer was devised by john schnell chairman of the house committee with the assist ance of miss haas john wong and sylvia zielinski then norton's so cial director in an effort to brighten up the gray cinder block walls and make it a cheerful place in which to re lax julie blashy an art student at the university was commissioned to paint several murals julie was given free reign in the design the only limitation being that it was to depict student life at u.b she painted a humorous version of some phases of colege life the theme is carried further by the frame of the two new bulletin boards facing the bookstore en trance u.b represented by delegates at student congress this summer three students from the university attended the eighth national student congtess at the university of minnesota president sal corrallo of the board of managers and james schleuss attended the student body presi dents conference and obtained ideas and facts from the other sbp participants participating in this three-day conference were the pres idents of over 300 colleges in the country in attendance at the foreign stu dent leaders conference was paul swanson who sat ln on the discus sions of foreign students represent ing some 15 different countries all were students who were study ing in this country either for a period of one or five years the discussions were extremely in teresting and informative mr swanson hopes that the informa tion he obtained in this short per iod of time will be useful to the university in planning their pro gram for foreign students there's co-ed swimming on tuesday evenings continued on page 6 silver ball committee applications may be
