the u of b spectrum attention make up exam schedule see page 4 the buffoon is coming ! ! watch for news official student publication of the university of buffalo volume 4 g buffalo n y fri feb 12 1954 number 13 chancellor announces tuition rise resignation of chancellor is announced by jim riley dr t r mcconnell will resign as chancellor of the university of buffalo to devote himself to teach ing writing and research at the university of california beginning next fall in announcing his decision to be come a professor of higher educa tion at the university of califor nia dr mcconnell said with the exception of only two of the thirty years i have been a member of a college staff i have been involved in some administrative work but my greatest satisfaction has come from teaching and especially from close association with graduate students if i wished to continue in ad ministration i would have no am bition beyond the university of buffalo but if i am to return to teaching i should not postpone the change any longer in accepting the resignation mr knox chairman of the council said we all deeply regret dr mcconnell's leaving but we must consider ourselves fortunate that he was here to lead the university during three and a half such crucial years of its development the growth in stature of the university during chancellor mc connell's administration can be measured in many ways samuel p capen hall the new building for the medical and dental schools was started and completed the university's first three dormitories for resident students have been constructed and a new wing has been added to norton hall under chancellor mcconnell's leadership the educational program of the university has been ex panded and improved in many ways he has encouraged the de velopment of both teaching and research to mention just three ex amples the physics department has undertaken a study of carbon which is already attracting national attention the university has es tablished a new and vigorously growing department of music and with the addition of the albright art school a broader program for fine arts is being developed we have learned much from our association with chancellor mc connell he commands the high est respect from the community for his judgment integrity ability and keen insight not only in hu man nature but in the needs of our university dick schaller leaves post engelhardt is new editor by james engelhardt richard star studded schaller has ended a one year tenure as editor-in-chief of the spectrum an official university of buffalo publication in an election held prior to the january vacation james engel hards former managing editor was raised to the position as edi tor-in-chief also elected at that time were james riley former lay out editor who assumed the post of managing editor mary ann saccomando former copy edi tor who assumed the position of news editor and marne currie who has taken the post of feature editor outgoing officers were lee bax formerly news editor and susan griffiths formerly feature editor harvey herer was re-elected to the position of business editor of the spectrum highlighting dick's tenure was a colorful christmas issue which has been acknowledged as the best ever published on the university of buf falo campus a senior in the school of business administration dick is also the vice president of his fraternity phi kappa psi under his direction the spectrum reached its efficient best just as impor tant is the fact that under his guid ance the spectrum became almost a self supporting enterprise during the last year the spec trum made head lines in the buf falo newspapers when a story was released on athletic scholarships which conflicted with a statement issued by chancellor t r mccon nell also an outgoing officer of the university of buffalo in the past it has been the prac tice of the incoming editor-in-chief to write a satirical and humorous article about his predecessor in the past it has been an easy job to write that sort of eulogy — most of the past editors-in-chief have been rather funny characters but as the incoming editor-in-chief after working with dick for a year and a half i cannot find it within me to be satirical the job done by richard star studded shaller does not require satirical recogni tion it warrants the gratitude of a staff just beginning to realize the size of the job he accomplished without so much as a snicker we of the spectrum staff would like to extend best wishes and good luck to dick for a job well done take it easy increase of 25 per semester in all divisions of university becomes effective next semester chancellor t raymond mcconnell this morning announced a rise in tuition of twenty-five dollars per semester in all divisions of the tuition charged by comparable institutions in 1953 the tuition in most divi sions of the university of syra cuse the university of rochester and cornell university for in iice was 700 the tuition at sselaer polytechnic institute is d at 800 le reason for the increase ncellor mcconnell said is the [ to continue the improvement lie university generally rising 3 during recent years of every g the university buys and the necessity of salary increases for many memberb of the faculty during the last academic year the university operated at a deficit of 26,440.55 the deficit for the cur rent academic year will be even larger chancellor mcconnell said if the tuition of the university of buffalo had kept pace with the rise in the cost of living since 1939 dr claude e puffer treasurer of the university pointed out it would now be 726 every effort has been made to keep the cost of education at the university of buffalo as low as pos sible without sacrificing quality chancellor mcconnell said these efforts will continue as the uni versity improves and develops but we cannot allow the high standards of the university to be lowered rumors of the intended rise in tuition have circulated on this campus for some time prior to the actual announcement there is no indication of over-all student opin ion on the move as yet the spec trum will conduct a public opinion poll to be published
