reporters 900 students visit norton hall open house two bands play for roaring twenties party bob lane presents a list of members of the orientation committees • to introduce the facilities of nor ton union to the newer members of the student body the program committee sponsored a mixer using the roaring twenties as its theme a crowd of nine hun dred students predominantly freshmen attended the open house which took place at various locations throughout the union the streamer lined speakeasy snackbar was authentically dec orated down to the checkered tablecloths and the customary candle in a bottle pat scime and his dixieland five provided sev eral brassy renditions including little brown jug and when the saints go marching in upstairs in the main ballroom ed diem played in a rtyle which was conducive to the slightly more conservative in keeping with the theme old time movies were shown in the millard fillmore lounge complete to the baritone piano which was dubbed in on tape by will breeden the movies included vengeance on the range charlie chaplin and scenes from the best moving up day don brocklehurst was chairman of the mixer also included were donna kohl dance chairman george johnson visual arts rocy cupolo tournament chairman joan kayhardt publicity prank barbieri in charge of the hide-a way snackbar and ken van kteehelen music chairman by norm corah roaring twenties open house blue masquers hold open house at 8:00 p m tuesday october 5th the blue masquers of the uni versity of buffalo the college's dramatic organization will hold its fall open house at 8:00 p.m tuesday evening october sth the function will take place in norton auditorium where a short skit will be presented and refreshments served those who are interested in any phase of dramatics will be given an opportunity to learn about the organization and meet its members during the three days following the open house all prospective blue masquers will be interviewed personally one of the oldest organizations on the university campus the masquer presents two full-scale productions each school year and have a supplementary experimental program in addition the group intends to provide entertainment in the form of scenes of skits for such institutions as the veterans hospital if you are more proficient at wielding a hammer or paint-brush than reciting lines remember that it requires many people to put a play before an audience a pro portionally small number from the membership join in order to act experience too is by no means essential and can easily be re placed by enthusiasm encourages bob kidney president if then you are interested the blue masquers are interested in meeting you ind cordially invite you to attend their open house next tuesday at 8:00 p.m brocato and fisher appointed to editorial staff of spectrum anthony s brocato a senior in 1 the school of arts and sciences will replace marne currie as fea ture editor of the spectrum mr brocato previously served as co feature editor of the spectrum ar\d has served as feature writer for more than one year mr bro cato is the author of southern accent which appears regularly as a feature service of the spec trum editorial page he is a vet eran fred fisher a d.g.t.s student has been appointed as rewrite edi tor of the spectrum he will re place marjorie grisanti who served in that capacity for one semester mr fisher has held the position of general reporter and member of the rewrite staff for more than one year mr fisher is a member of theta chi fraternity panhell council's rush tea at 2 p.m sunday october 3 the panhellenic council an nounces its annual rush tea to be held on sunday october 3 at 2:00 p.m in the millard fillmore lounge norton hall the tea will be preceded by a convocation be ginning at 1:00 p.m in the audi torium capen hall the convoca tion is to be attended by all soror ity women and all women wishing to rush the present semester procedures as announced by the 1954 panhellenic guide are to be followed all women who have attained the standing of a second semester freshman or those who are enrolled in the division of general and technical studies and who otherwise comply with eligi bility requirements are invited to register for rushing immediately prior to the convocation all women who register at the panhellenic convocation are invit ed without further notice to attend the following sorority rush teas during the week of oct 3 sigma delta tau — monday oct 4 theta chi tuesday oct 5 phi sigma sigma — tuesday oct 5 sigma kappa — wednesday oct 6 alpha gamma delta — thursday oct 7 all teas will be held at norton hall from 7:00 p.m until 10:00 orientation bob lane chairman of the freshman orientation committee said this week that the orientation program this year was highly suc cessful and he attributes this suc cess in large part to the efforts of the various committee chairmen working with bob on the steer ing committee were jim riley el freda ilsanker peggy treat and barbara simpson secretary dr fisher dotty haas dr johnson and dean mohn worked with the committee in the capacity of fac ulty advisors the committee chairmen were as follows armando serero dean's convocation phil d'angello tours jim honlen and bill mc laughlin registration patti ahern and bob kager welcoming carol thompson luncheon ed rausch rally stan schwartz rep resentative of bisonhead men's meeting joyce watkins represen tative of cap and gown women's meeting joe ferlecci student di visional meeting george bodkin organization of freshman com mittee and jim engleharrt and roz feinberg freshman hand book dr.heindel dean of arts and science straight from the department of state in washington d c where he served as stuff deputy director ot the u s national commission for unesco comes dr richard h heindel new dean of the college of arts and science dr heindel was born in han over pennsylvania a little over fifty years ago and attended the college of gettysburg for two years before going to harvard uni versity where he received his a.b in 1933 he received his master's and doctor's degrees from the university of pennsylvania in 1934 and 1938 respectively dean heindel is replacing retir ing dean julian park holder of the french legion of honor al though dr park is retiring as dean of the college of arts and science he will continue at the university of buffalo as professor of euro pean history and international re lations dr heindel started his career with the department of state as director of the american library at our embassy in london eng land he serviced there for three years during the war before re turning to the united states in 1945 to become chief of the divi sion of libraries and institutes he served in this capacity for almost six years where he directed flow of information to our overseas libraries aid to american spon sored schools abroad and bi-nation al institutions in latin america and translation of american works i and arts into all of the major for eign languages in 1951 he became deputy direc tor of the united states national commission for the united nations educational scientific and cultur
