number 7 university plays host to students of area schools view campus life the second group of high schooi students to tour u.b this year paiii us a visit tuesday they wert seniors from riverside hig 11 school and their arrival market tivj beginning of u.b.'s fall pro gram to acquaint high school stu dents with college life they are to be followed by a group froir kenmore high school on thursday of next week the main purpose of the pro gram is to give our high school students an idea of what u.b is really like this is accomplished by a series of tours of the various facilities and buildings on campus and by seeing its students as they go about their daily college routine the tours which are guided by student hosts of the university are the results of efforts by miss alison coateaworth of the admis sions office and miss dorothy obrecht to let local high school students see the various opportuni ties for higher education pre sented by u.b student hosts are aotually living the life of a college student thus it is felt that they are better able to explain it also the age differ ence between high school and col lege students is small and one can better remember the questions he had about college life when he wa3 in high school this fact makes for a more informative tour the visitors are divided into croups according to their probable chrjice of school division and shown points on the campus which would most correspond to their in terests their day is concluded with lunch in the cafeteria and a little relaxation in the snack bar of norton hall edward michael hall dedicated visual arts plan photo contest the week of november 8 to 12 will find the photo contest in full swing it is sponsored by the vis lal arts committee contestants entries will be on display in the millard fillmore lounge for any one who wishes to see them the public is urged to attend the ex hibit daytime students carrying twelve hours or more were eligible to enter this contest contestants we e allowed to submit as many photos as they wished prizes will be awarded to the best photographs in these four categor les = 1 children and animals 2 s ports and action 3 still life 4 adults and portraits chairman of ws event is olive dorman university of rochester parking rules and regulations approved a parking problem — a univer sal problem rochester has em too this article appeared in the oc tober 22 1954 edition of the uni versity of rochester newspaper acceptance of a set of parking recommendations from the office of the dean of instruction and stu dent services headed the agenda of the senate last tuesday eve ning the increasing number of cars ! on the river campus has made it necessary for certain parking and traffic rules to be put in effect these rules will facilitate the fin j ing of offenders of the regulations in brief the policy is as follows each student full or part time in any college of the university must annually register his car in the office of the dean of men to ob tain the privilege of parking on the river campus a registration fee of 1.00 per year shall be charged after the second term begins the fee shall be reduced to 50 each student registering a car shall receive a numbered registration sticker a 5.00 fine will be charged for parking on campus without a registration sticker a student parked illegally on campus shall be fined 2.00 for the first offense of his entire col lege career not just of the year 3.00 for second and 5.00 for each additional offense a com mittee composed of students will hear appeals mrs keller honored 550 parents brave cold and rain for freshman day activities here edward michael hall is dedicated mrs h keller travels from newton center massachusetts the fourth annual freshman parents day was held satur day october 30 the highlight of the program was the cornerstone laying ceremony at 11 00 p.m for the new men's dormitory edward michael hall approximately 550 parents braved the cold and wet weather to attend dr theodore e johnson assistant professor of education opened the ceremonies and intro duced rev george crandal who led the opening prayer and gave god's blessing to the building and the people destined to live in the new structure this was followed by the na tional anthem played by the r o t c band under the direction of sgt leech jim cole president of the stu dent board of manager spoke on behalf of the students of this uni versity mr cole spoke of the new residence as a symbol of progress not only did he stress the symbol ism of progress as shown in the new building but also pointed out the rise in school spirit resulting from the dormitories these new and better accommodations have been made possible through the untiring efforts of the council of u.b dr johnson then introduced chancellor clifford c furnas who paid tribute to the man being hon ored at this ceremony edward | micheal was a former council mem ber and chairman of the councils building and grounds committee for nearly 30 years it was largely through his efforts that the uni versity acquired the site of the present campus mr micheal died oct 24 1951 at the age of 101 the great work and interest of this man has been carried on by his three daughters clara jeanette and edwina dr purnas went on to say that the objective of these dormitories is to receive the benefit of a cross section of students from many re gions thus better serving the niagara frontier as well as the nation the benefits of such a pro gram are already being made evi dent by the students and faculty among those responsible for the success of thiß program is mr karl ub to play host to student union representatives on november 14 and 15 the uni versity of buffalo will play host to the sixth annual student union regional conference miss doro thy haas director of norton union will act as regional chair man for the over one hundred del egates who are expected dr c c furnas chancellor will deliver a welcoming address on monday to the delegates who will represent universities and colleges from the state of new york and the provinces of quebec and on tario the purpose of the confer ence is to discuss the problems that are common to student unions the two main problems being that of finance and entertainment the delegates of the university of buffalo have planned tours of the campus and a dance the swing ding to be held sunday evening for the visiting delegates and union administrations the last student union conference held here was in 1950 ugly man contest closes today this campus is notorious or should we say famous for many ihings elect the ugliest man on campus all you have to do is to drop a penny for each vote int'i a jar at the alpha phi omega booth in norton lobby tonight the winner will be decided this is the last day of the contest if you haven't voted or see that your choice for the ugliest man isn't winning get over there before 3 p m last week it was announced that the contest would last from nov ist to the 15th this was an error it lasts or lasted only from nov 2nd to the 6th the proceeds this year will be donated to the campus barrel fund last year we collected 90.00 the winner was bruce baust from thetff chi they topped all other entrants with 46 38 not only did they prove themselves to have in their ranks the ugliest man on campus last year but they showed a willingness to support a worthy charity the ugliest man gets a trophy mug and his fraternity gets to keep the plaque with his name on it for a year let's elect the ugliest man pos sible panhellenic ball at hotel statler nov 24 from 10-2 the first formal dance of the 54-55 school year will be the pan hellenic ball it will be held wed nov 24 in the main ballroom of the hotel statler music will be provided by eddie diem's orches tra from 10 to 2 approximately 200 sorority mem bers and their dates will attend this dance is sponsored by the panhellenic council patty ahem is general chairman prior to the dance cocktail par ties will be held by each sorority in a place to be announced at a inter date continued on paee 10 send the spectrum home to parents or friends for only 1.50 per year
