18 1955 number 15 arts election petitions due wednesday at norton candy counter 205 to receive degrees tuesday at kleinhans the university of buffalo will hold its mid-year commencement tuesday at 10:30 in kleinhaps music hall approximately 203 candidates for degrees will partici pate in the program the commencement address will be given by dr william pearson talley chancellor of syracuse uni versity the rev raymond j ash cath olic chaplain of the university will give the invocation and pronounce the benediction the presentation of the chan cellor's medal to an outstanding citizen for distinguished service to the community will be one of the highlights of the exercises the medal which was established in 1925 is presented annually how ever the identity of the recipient will not be revealed until chan cellor clifford c furnas delivers the citation during the program a breakdown of students gradu ating from the various schools and divisions shows certificate in business adminis tration one certificate in arts and sciences one associate in arts one associate in applied sciences 12 bachelor of science in engi neering 13 bachelor of science in nursing 11 bachelor of science in sheila frank spe cial arrangements a quarter and luck will be apropos corrallo heads calendar group to draft 1955-1956 activities the general activities commit tee which is composed of eighty odd campus organizations has set up a calendar committee under the chairmanship of sal corrallo which is currently drafting a tentative schedule of all university events for the school year of 1955-56 be fore monday most of the organiza tions including norton activities the athletic department fraterni ties and sororities etc will have received a letter requesting certain pertinent data regarding their events for next year with the cooperation of all or ganizations the new system is de signed to alleviate certain evils in the status quo specifically poor attendance and small profits be cause of conflicting events the deadline for submission of the list of events is monday feb 2s at noon at the candy counter in the calendar comm gac box cooperation is the keynote of the system organizations may send representatives to the next gac meeting in the east room of nor ton on march 1 at 3:30 p.m nsa delegates to convene here for spring regional conference the spring regional conference of the national student associa ' tion will convene on the campus march 18 19 and 20 the nsa is the coordinating body of college student govern ments it attempts through dis cussion of problems pertinent to the campus to find solution for them the u.b board of managers was given authority by the stu dents to affiliate with the nsa the objectives of the regional conference will be 1 to sift out campus problems in new york state excluding new york city 2 to prepare for the national congress 3 to broaden the fields in which state groups are working 4 to discuss students personal objectives joan mcclennen chairs the steer ing committee for the conference and john schell chairs the confer ence arrangements committee dean gordon klopf of the buf falo state teachers college and member of the nsa advisory committee will present the key note address wally longshore na tional vice president of student affairs will speak on trends in student government workshop committees will dis cuss such topics as academic free dom student curriculums human relations international affairs and student government programing all u.b students are automati cally members of the national student association the steering committee is headed by miss mc lennan other representatives are russ spoto millie mcdermott elaine davis bobbie rossman hugh lindstrom and john schell on the national scale delegates are sent to conventions to make recommendations and to promote leadership for example a bill be fore congress recently to increase the salary of teachers to 4,000 was supported by the nsa the bill was later passed health office now in michall hall the student health office has been moved to the basement of edward michall hall and will con tinue to carry its services to stu dents tt was announced today that the office hours would remain the same as before they are tues 11:30 a.m 12:30 p.m wed 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m thurs 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m fri 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m during these hours dr paul f hoffman the medical adviser for men or dr helen g walker the medical adviser for women will be available to the students every day from 9 a.m to 5:00 p.m a nurse is on duty among the many services which the health office offers are 1 arrangement for medical con sultation with the physician 2 first aid treatment 3 information on health affairs in the community and 4 transfer of health records the office handles all rotc physicals and also the physicals given to the prospective freshmen class all health records are kept up to date in the newly decorated office and student small pox records are also on file board of managers campaign to open candidates for the board of managers election will appear before the students at an open meeting in norton auditorium during convocation hour march 1 it was an nounced this week by the board which met tuesday in nor ton campaign posters also will be displayed before the open meeting ■* a sweeping revision of campaign and election procedure was approv ed by the board as recommended by the election committee now an official committee headed by bob lane details of these changes are available in the assistant di rector's office major revisions involve the num bering and assignment of ballots with proper identification of vot ers signature sheets will be pro vided at the polls and each voter must show his norton card in or der to vote with the exception of law students each voter must have signed the signature sheet at registration and signatures must of course check finally two election judges will be stationed at eacft table to check and distribute ballots these wiil be given out in numerical order and at the time the ballot is given to the voter the judge will sign his name on the ballot which then must be marked at once by the voter and put in the ballot box in tabulating returns committee members previously designated will check ballot numbers and total signatures against total ballots in each box when the count is taken two tabulators shall take a sepa rate count of each candidate and two others shall alternately call the ballots and check all ballots and signatures will again be checked at this time the board will meet tuesday to discuss tentative agenda includ ing appointment of the seven-mem ber steering committee awards committee and moving up day committee appointees to a seven-member student publications committee were also announced by the board they are thomas o'neil anthony potenza joan mclennen bill web er dr selig adler professor of history and government dr kath erine f thorn professor of drama and speech and sloan wilson di rector of the information service by norm corah beverly lee and dick weber take spotlight in virginia reel at last friday's square dance in norton union junior promenade set for march 26 plans for the annual junior promenade are now under way on march 26 the dance is sched uled to be held at kleinhans music hall from 10 to 2 the name of the orchestra has not yet been dis closed but it will be a well known one a junior prom queen will be crowned at the dance all entries of full-time junior girls must be received before march ist at the candy counter tickets which are 5.00 a couple will be on sale in norton union at a later date to be announced the committee heads consist of the following people don brocklehurst — chairman dave outlines projects the leadership committee head ed by john schell is a subcommit tee for the national student asso ciation among those on the steering committee for n.s.a are john schell mildred mcdermott elaine davis russ spoto barbara rossman hugh lindstrom and joan mclennan this leadership committee is in terested in student organization and getting new projects started on campus some of their projects are 1 a study of hours of out side employment 2 students in terests as indicated in student af fairs coupons 3 series of inter views in cooperation with admin istrative officers 4 working with election committee on training program for candidates for the noard of managers and 5 con ducting a discussion group for a selected group of students on rela tion of student government and student activities jersey wheelers will play march 4 dance to follow the jersey wheelers national wheel-chair basketball champions will play friday mar 4 at the 174th armory against the bulova watch makers the game is being spon sored by the 1955 erie county raster seal committed following the game it 8:80 p.m dave cheskin and his orchestra will provide music for dancing the price for admission is 1.1 per person tickets may be pur chased in norton lobby next week monday through friday between 11:30 and 2 the entire spectrum staff will hold a get-to gether with a few promi nent
