the h.b spertrum volume 5 buffalo n y fri march 11 1955 number 1 spectrum to hold meeting in april by fred fisher the spectrum staff will hold the second series of monthly organiza tional meetings april 19 at 7:30 in the west room of norton the first meeting was held march 1 with sloan wilson director of the information service homer e baker advisor to the spectrum and james riley editor as the main speakers dr jack deerin ger dean of students miss dorothy haas director of norton and miss alison coatsworth admissions counselor also attended and spoke briefly the purpose of this meeting was to have the staff members staff editors and editorial board meet one another and have a general ' •*_ together over coffee in future meetings the same idea will be followed but more time will be devoted to working out closer co ordination also the rights and wrongs in news writing will be stressed the editorial board hopes through these meetings to share with the entire staff the prob lems and achievements of the spectrum the importance and scope of the spectrum is not widely known among the students it was pointed out by mr wilson who explained that with a university as large as u.b a good school paper acts as a voice of the student body to give the administration of the univer sity and others the often times helpful student opinion miss coatsworth pointed out that in her duties of encouraging high school students to enroll here at the university the spectrum could be a great potential tool in showing advantages of attending u.b with its large variety of extracurricular activities and school organizations mr baker stressed the need for accuracy in news writing and called attention to the importance of us j names and titles correctly by norm corah sloan wilson homer baker fred fisher and jim riley editor at first spectrum meeting another photo on page 5 students to give dido and aeneas students will present the uni versity's first opera on april 21 22 23 in the norton union audi torium the opera dido and aeneas written by henry purcell tells the tragic love story of the trojan hero and the carthage queen featured in the opera are vivian gerard soprano robert bauer baritone dorothy rosenberger so prano toni packer mezzo-soprano and edward roush tenor the staging and production is l>y jim braver mrs bertha pfef fer is in charge of the dances while herbert beattie directs the music contest for m.u.d the contest for a moving up day theme will close wednesday with a prize of 5 for the winning theme entry blanks may be obtained and submitted at the candy counter the m.u.d committee will post a st of committees and their chair * n the bulletin board in the hall behind the candy counter anyone interested in working jay join one of the committees by signing the list john schell elected chairman of nsa spring regional here student government leaders of the national student association from schools all over the state will convene here next week-end to dis cuss student-government problems and responsibilities john schell will be the general chairman the theme of the spring regional will be nsa — locally regionally and nationally u.b delegates will be chosen this week by the board of managers all students are invited to sit in on any of the discussion panels which will include academic free dom human rights student and the curriculum legislative activities travel programs international pro ! grams student-discount service and leadership-training programs i the objectives of the regional conference will be 1 — to discuss cornmon campus pro blems 2 — to prepare delegates for the national congress 3 — to discuss proposed legislation effecting students both state and national 4 to discuss the rotc loyalty oaths the nsa has announced plans to conduct a nation-wide survey of student participation in college pol icy-making supported by a grant of 29,400 from the ford foundation the sur vey will send questionnaires to deans of students anh student lead ers at about 800 colleges and uni versities throughout the u s 5 candidates seek prom queen crown students will vote on murch 25 a 13-piece orchestra plus a vo calist will be present at the 1955 junior promenade at the present time they are on tour playing at notre dame michigan state ohio state penn state and cornell be fore they hit the u.b campus the band records for decca bill rittman queen chairman an nounces that the election of the queen will take place friday march 25 with the following girls as candidates joanne trifthauser 20 an edu cation major 5 ft 7 in now in rehearsal it was announced by president herman ' schaffer early this week the play i enjoyed a long run recently on s broadway i c all committees of the organiza tion have commenced full-scale operation scenery has proven a real challenge to members of the group but under the guidance of scene designer dolorita boettcher i difficulties are being worked out 29 candidates open campaigns for board of managers elections votes to be cast on wednesday the board of managers elections next week has a total of 20 candidates running of these there are 20 men and nine women in their respective schools election rules stipu late that of the six women running at-large three must have seats on the board a of the candidates 16 will run at large 3 will run in the engineering division and 2 in each of the other divisions except dental school education dgts and nursing where candidates are unopposed jim cole president of the pres ent board of managers outlined the aims of the board of man agers its structure as well as the obligations and duties of its mem bers the new election rules recently approved by the board were ex plained by bob lane chairman of the election committee he stated that 1 — no candidate may spend more than 30 on his campaign 2 — only one picture poster per can didate will be allowed in each building these posters shall not exceed 14 x 22 3 — no publicity of any kind will be allowed on the walls inside or outside of any building 4 — no publicity of any kind will be allowed on the trees lamp posts steps or sidewalks on the campus 5 — oil-cloth signs must be taken down by 5 o'clock of the elec tion day voting will take place wednes day in business ad crosby arts and science dgts hayes engin eering clark gym med-dent ca pon hall law law school phar macy nursing foster the polls will open at 9:15 and close at 3:30 except for nurses who mav vote until 4:30 damnit presented the tournament committee pre sented damnit in norton union auditorium tuesday this event is put on twice a semester by thia norton union committee prizes awarded to winners include ashtrays beermugs wallets cuff links and other u.b souvenirs chairman was bob grassi work ing with him were john allen jack posem and bob meyer students attend city meetings city officials will hold a series of meetings td acquaint college students with the organization and functions of the buffalo city government the first meeting will be held tomorrow at 9:00 a.m in the common council chambers 13th floor of the city hall the officials will explain the work of their departments discuss some of the problems confronting them in their work and answer ques tions the meetings are designed to pro vide a general orientation for stu dents who wish to participate in a program of individual field work assignments the program is now being established in various city departments u.b student vows to carry fight to top courts pasquale lucente a freshman here at u.b has vowed to continue his fight to remain in the u s a native of italy he risked his life during world war ii to aid four american fliers after they es caped from a german pw camp because he overstayed a visitor's permit issued in 1948 he has been ruled deportable by the immigra tion and naturalization service he plans if necessary to appeal to president eisenhower in an ef fort to stave off deportation attorney leonard c lovallo took the case to u.s district court last december and asked for a new hearing the move failed the ease now is awaiting a hearing be fore the u.s court of appeals other attempts too have failed so far two special bills introduced for lucente in the s3rd congress were turned down by a house sub committee in january of this year a third attempt was made to tha committee however the subcom mittee of the house judiciary com mittee reported unfavorably on tho measure thus all but dooming lta chances of passage they gave no continued on pace 7
