the u.b spectrum volume 5 buffalo n y fri april 29 1955 n number 23 u.s.a.f commissions again available to senior cadets commissions in the usaf re serve will be available this year according to notification received by lt col roswell w ard professor of air science col ard said all presently en rolled senior cadet officers who successfully complete their aca demic and military requirements between may 1 1955 and april 30 1956 will receive a commission included in the group to be called to active duty are approximately flight training from the 188 8100 who have been accepted for afrotc units in the nation also included and to assume non-rated duties are 2000 who have technical and administrative type skills needed by the air force last year lack of vacancies with the active air force made it nec essary to give certificates of com pletion in lieu of immediate ap pointments as second lieutenants to some 4800 graduates the certificates entitled the re cipients to an a f reserve officer's appointment upon completion of obligated military service in an en listed status graduates scheduled to receive such certificates were given the opportunity however to accept ap pointments to the air national guard and either have been or will be in the near future ordered to active duty for training with the air force rho chi honorary pharmaceuti cal society recently elected new members eligibility for member ship is based on scholarship char acter personality and leadership new members in buffalo are jo seph a chazan thomas l flan nery algirdas gamziukas jacob j glickman mrs mildred gold stein jerry ross herbert sterns carroll f thornton and nelson p torre council elections next friday noon in west room it was announced today that the arts and science council elections will be held next friday in the west room of norton union the polling booths will open at 12 p.m the pictures activities and plat forms of the candidates will be printed in next friday's edition of the spectrum no electioneering in the form of slingers posters ban ners etc will be allowed candidates for the council elec tion will have their pictures taken monday at 2:30 p.m in the spec trum office at that time they will be required to post their activities and platforms with a spectrum representative for publication in the coming elections three sophomore offices five junior of fices and two senior offices will be filled students will vote for those candidates representing their class status as of next semester members of the board of managers are not eligible for election to the student council of the college of arts and science gac meeting there will be a meeting of the general activities coun cil this wednesday at 3:30 p.m in norton auditorium it is important that all or ganizations be represented three m.u.d queen candidates will be introduced thursday at alpha sig sweetheart review alpha sigma phi will present its sweetheart review this thurs day introducing the three candi dates for queen of moving up day the candidates miss judy dwor miss ethel hansen and miss gret chen koehnke will be introduced to the students by bill henry who will present each of the girls with flowers on behalf of alpha sig the moving up day committee has voted to allow campaigning be cause of the color and spirit it adds to the occasion the sched ule is judging tuesday elections wednesday pi'esentation thursday following the pi-esentation of the candidates the erie canal dixi j crats will be featured at a dance on the terrace in front of norton hall weather permitting or in the auditoi'ium at the dance the alpha sigma phi cup will be pre sented by fi-ank cicero to the win ning candidate who will be seren aded by the brothers of alpha sig friday movies of the former moving up parades will be shown in norton auditorium at noon fol lowing the movies a coffee hour will be held in the millard fill more lounge from the left ethel hansen gretchen koehnke and judy dwor candidates for m.u.d queen prospective frosh participate in annual welcome weekend the annual welcome weekend exercises were held april 23 and 24 in norton union and the dorms with 53 men and 37 women coming from as far as glens falls and plattsburgh in attendance they were housed in two of the dormitories — michael hall for men students and macdonald hall for the women students events saturday included tours advise ment meetings coffee hours and a barbecue buffet and square dance a dinner sunday in norton hall concluded the weekend program chancellor clifford c furnas and deans of the undergraduate schools were guests at the dinner all of the students invited have been tentatively accepted for ma triculation in september the pur pose of the program is to acquaint them with the welcome weekend new scholarship offered by board as result of junior prom success a scholarship will be set up by the board of managers as a result of the financial success of the junior prom to be eligible for this scholarship one must be a full time student in any day session of the university the award is based on financial need participation in non athletic extracurricular activities and acceptable academic work the minimum amount will be 450 applications for this scholarship may be secured from the office of the chairman of the university of buffalo scholarship committee 192 hayes hall and must be returned to that office not later than monday may 16 1955 yearbook and directory editors named by board oi managers handbook position is left vacant the board of managers at their regular meeting tues day named the new editors of the buffalonian and the stu dent directory however the editorship of the student handbook remains open as the result of a constitutional mix up rocky cupolo was named editor of the student handbook a week j ago in a move that overruled the publications committee which had recommended jan jakiel tn<s board decided at this week's meet , ing that this action was unconsti tutional thus leaving the editor of the student handbook undecided the publications committee will review applications for editor of the student handbook and submit a second recommendation to the hoard for approval in the interim the publications committee has been asked to appoint a tempo i rary editor the new editors for the buf falonian are john louria editor i janet nitsch associate editor and ron tills business manager . the student directory board is jackie emmons editor pat sul livan managing editor and rob ert dimatteo business manager the hoard also reaffirmed its position to void the entire arts and science class elections despite a proposal that only the presidency of the sophomore class be rerun the suggestion was made in a for mal letter to the board by james engelhardt chairman of the arts and science student council re organization committee he pointed out in his letter that as long us complaints had been re ceived for just this one position it would be unnecessary to rerun the entire election mr engelhardt also asked that a member of the election committee sit in on the meeting to discuss election pro last chance a second administration of the selective service examination is scheduled for this campus on may 19 deadline for applications is may ii and are available in office of dean of students 192 hayes hull this is the last chance for students to take this examination during this present semester afrotc cadets will go formal to the military ball claude thornhill his piano and his orchestra with patty ryan will provide the music at the fourth annual afrotc military dall to morrow in the grand court ol the connecticut street armory it will be formal for nil afrotc cadets meaning ihat uniforms must he worn with a white shirt and black bow tie for non afrotc members it is encourag ed that they wear a dark suit semi-formal i refreshments will be served for anyone wishing to purchase them the bar will also be open pro visions will be made for checking coats and hats there will be no saluting inside the armory but any where outside cadets are urged to salute their officers saluting is not considered a burdensome act but rather a military courtesy and privilege proceeds will go to the scholar ship fund thirteen faculty members promoted with twelve advancements in arts and one in school of dentistry thirteen promotions on the fac ulty of the university of buffalo were announced recently by chan cellor clifford c furnas twelve of the advancements were in the college of arts and sciences and one in the school of dentistry the promotions are as follows professors dr milton c albrecht from associate professor to pro fessor of sociology and anthropol ogy dr gordon m harris from associate professor to professor of chemistry associate professors dr j ar thur mattern from assistant pro fessor to associate professor of chemistry dr edward j buehler from assistant professor to asso ciate professor of geology and geography dr george l school field from assistant professor to as sociate professor of modern lan guages and dr helen w burrell from assistant professor to asso ciate professor of modern lan guages assistant professors dr george l kustas from instructor to as sistant professor of classics mrs janet c potter from instructor to assistant professor of drama and speech dr adam pepelasis from lecturer to assistant professor of economics dr kurt p taubcr from instructor to assistant pro fessor of history and government albert g fadell from instructor to assistant professor of
