assistant director named the appointment of dr milton l'lesur a faculty member since 1p49 as assistant to the director of the division of general and technical studies was announced today a 1947 graduate of buffalo state teachers college he also will serve as a lecturer in general studies masquers to present ploys two in one for the first time in the history of the university the blue mas of the student handbook his name was re-suibmitted for editor of the student handbook by tom o'neill chairman of the publica tions committee the board re versing its position of two meet ings ago accepted the publication committee recommendation at a previous meeting edward weeks was appointed managing editor and sam sansone business man ager of the student handbook the following 29 were approved for the student public relations committee sam profetta rob keenburg jo ann andrushak ax lene hoffman cathy gerven ed weeks john schell shirley wood carolyn dell bob flockhart hal banner sorrel resnik jim schleuss ruth cole barbara mc carthy salty parsons nada yost ann hicks joe shramek elaine swartz elfrieda ilsanker marilyn chappell elaine salvo dick ll sclandro sam sansone george lodkin ben michelewski carl iomberg and pat sullivan all groups urged to attend final gac meeting the general activities council of the university will hold its final meeting wednesday for the pres ent school year each campus or ganiation is urged to send a rep representative to this meeting the gac as established by the 1954-55 board of managers is set up for the purpose of scheduling and co-ordinating the activities of campus organizations in such a manner as to avoid conflicts in date reservations and publicity pro graming this is done in an effort to allow more adequate support for each organization's program by the student body without having to suffer due to competition it is hoped that eventually no organiza tion will have to suffer social or financial losses on any endeavors in which they desire campus par ticipation at present the gac is in pre liminary stage of development there are many items yet to be acted upon in order to insure its effectiveness and value such poli cies as an organized campus cal endar priority of date reservations and means of enforcing the func tion of the council to the best in terests of all concerned still re ( main foremost on the agenda if the gac can be developed 1 through the participation of all \ the organizations represented on t it then many of the present detri 1 ments and snags in the campus t situation can be virtually elimm rosenthal ben michalski robert weintraub geraldine vinci the arts and sciences class election will also be held in the west room at the same time orientation heads seek new members for committees committee chairmen for 1955 orientation are now looking for members for various committees lists will be posted on the norton union bulletin boards for the fol lowing committees registration men's smoker welcome women's meetings convocation coffee hours barn dance splash party tours and campus open house dorm students will also be needed for the out of towners dinner which will be held on wednesday sept 21 the night before upper class registration the new featuie of this year's orientation will be the campus open house and pep rally to be held friday sept 23 the night before the opening football game with cortland among the activi ties will be dancing at norton union a torch snake dance over the campus and lighting of the buildings on campus steering committee chairmen are tom haenle general chair man jim schleuss divisional and personnel jan nitsch social and civic chairman frank barbieri dorms and tours joanne trifts hauser recording secretary and rally chairman faculty appointments two assisiniil professors have been appointed they are dr john vernon slater now on the faculty of the university of florida as assistant professor of biology and john h hodses an instructor at duke university as assistant professor of mathemat ics russian student editors cancel proposed 30-day tour of u s schools eleven russian editors of stu dent newspapers who planned a 30-day tour of the united states to visit a number of colleges and uni versities this month canceled their trip rather than submit to a u s immigration law requiring all visi tors to be fingerprinted when they receive their visas cancellation of the visit was an nounced a week before the editors were scheduled to arrive in the u s their tour sponsored by the institute of international educa tion was to have included colum bia fordham hunter tuskegee institute new mexico stanford chicago and michigan and ucla the state department said that it regretted the cancellation but the editors were unwilling to com ply with the legal requirements m.u.d parade proves to be colorful spectacle with its 16 floats it was a trifle windy but a bright sun made the m.u.d parade a col orful spectacle a light shower in the early hours of the morning left no traces at 10:00 a.m satur day when the procession com menced at main and exchange streets the parade was accompanied by the university's own afrotc band and drill team the buffalo state band and drill team the lockport vfw drum and bugle corps and the atomicettes of north tonawanda the buffalo po lice department was on hand to serve as escorts the parade was watched by thousands of spectators as it moved slowly northward to campus with the exception of two mis haps the parade according to pa rade chairman mike tannenberg went along smoothly a motor cycle patrolman was knocked down as he weaved through the line of march a float by theta chi fra ternity was washed out as it jour neyed to the starting point during the early-morning shower the reviewing stand was located in front of lockwood memorial li brary on campus the judges es corted to campus by the city police appraised each float as it passed before them as the float went to ■——•■« vgvwwaimwaiw j ■■the bailey avenue parking area to be dismantled the judges pro ceeded to clark gym to decide on the winners assisted by four trucks from the university main tenance department the floats were disposed of and representa tives from each organization as sembled in the gymnasium to hear an announcement of the winning floats as follows fraternity division be ta sigma rho sigma alpha mu and alpha phi delta respec tively sorority division — sigma delta tau alpha gamma delta and sipma kappa respectively independent division — blue masquers and engineering 1 , respectively overall the first prize went to the blue masquers who entered a float captioned county seat all organizations that were pre sented trophies must turn them in at the assistant director's office in order that they may be engraved also the 1 float deposit may be picked up in the office until may 20 applications for the raymond mcconnell award are now avail able at the candy counter in norton they must be returned to the board of managers mall box by may 25 at 5 p.m in a sealed envelope
