spectrum official student publication of the university of buffalo university to raise tuition rates volume 2 gg buffalo n y friday april 25 1952 increase to be small it was announced today by the administration that a small in crease in tuition will become effective september 1 1952 the students of all the daytime divisions except the medical and dental schools will pay 25 more a semester the evening students rates will be increased from 16 to 17.50 per semester hour the chancellor t raymond mcconnell indicated that there was no alternative but to raise the tuition despite the fact that we depend on tuition fees for a very great proportion of our operating income the university of buffalo has kept its tuition rates lower than those in most comparable institutions throughout the country even with the small increase that we must effectuate in the fall the university will be charging considerably less than most of the well-known colleges and universities in the u s costs of operation have risen so high in recent years that practi cally all schools have had to increase their tuition fees ours is a small adjustment and we believe it will not cause undue hardship among our students chancellor mcconnell outlined three purposes f.r which the new revenue will be used 1 selective faculty salary iii-b is imperative for the i university to keep its outstanding i faculty members to to schedules have been completed and the glee club is ready to present their 31st annual home concert this evening in the hotel statler ball room it was evident at the concert given last monday for the students of emerson high school that the chorus under the direction of wal lace a van lier is fully prepared for their 1952 public debut the 50 members have practiced dili gently every monday for the past year and already have performed at many private gatherings spe cial emphasis has been placed on reaching the audience a difficult task when you consider that many high school students hate to sit quiet during a concert but the fact remains that audiences at many high schools such as cleve land hill and williamsville high school have enthusiastically re ceived the university's good will ambassadors mr van lier will direct works of verdi wagner tschaikowsky and schumann as well as several more popular types of numbers an outstanding favorite of this year's audiences has been mary had a little lamb a four-part choral arrangement adopting the most modern of stylistic devices making it amusing moody and in triguing included in the program are many of the soloists heard at last wednesday's variety show arleno siekierski soprano ed ward rouseh tenor and roger pfohl pianist will perform mr pfohl will play one of his own com positions june walther is the glee club's accompanist the members of the chorus are especially pleased this year to have acquired the professional services of dave cheskin's 11-piece orchestra mr cheskin and his vocalist shir ley boden will provide the music for the four hours of dancing that will follow the choral concert the latter will begin at 8:15 p.m and end at 9:45 p.m dancing in the statler ball room will begin at 10:00 p.m and last until
