winter carnival weekend will come saturday evening when the crystal ball is held at the royal james hotel 207 delaware ave dave cheskin's orchestra one of the finest in the buffalo area will play for the dance their ten-piece band will fea ture a vocalist dress will be semi-formal the highlight of the evening will be the crowning of a king and queen who will lead a grand march all candidates for king and queen will be present making up a court presentation of the various tro phies to organizations and win ning individuals also will be pre sented during the course of the evening these awards will be pre sented by dick fischer who is also donating the trophies some of these awards will be given for snow i sculpturing novice events and beards tickets for this dance can be obtained today in the lobby of nor ton at the sitzmarkers booth the winter carnival week is drawing to a close but most of the events are yet to happen tonight at 7 p.m the bongo hoard contest is being held in the lobby of nor ton the contestants will demon strate their balance on a log the | winner being the one staying on | the longest time immediately fol | lowing there will be a coffee hour and fireside sing saturday's outdoor events be gin with the novice ski contests at !! a.m at the rear of schoellkopf hall there will be a three-legged race a balloon breaking contest and a hare and hound race at noon buses will leave norton bound fow chestnut ridge park for a ski and toboggan party the bus es will return in the late after noon student government revision weighed the new constitution providing for an all-student senate to govern the student body of ub will be submitted for approval to the university council within one month's time from findings of the board of manager's student govern ment for the ub song contest sponsored by the sprc has been extended to march 9 two songs of separate distinc tion must be submitted one a fight song is to be comparable to that of michigan wisconsin etc the other must be written in a ballad style the music number of lines and verses will be left to the discretion of the composers the prizes consist of two 50 awards for each song the con test is open to all students faculty and alumni if none of the songs submitted are not truly represen tative of ub the judges have been authorized to award no prizes all entries must be submitted to the sprc norton union mai eiken to leave coaching post by dave pies mai eiken ub basketball coach for the past v ten seasons has an nounced his resignation effective at the end of the current campaign eiken who has a current record of 133 victories and only 72 losses has never had a losing season while monitor of the cage sports at üb some of the greatest stars m the area have played under the guid 1 ance of mai players from previous seasons like hal kuhn lou cor riere jack chalmers and jim home coach eiken also holds the posi tions of assistant professor of phys ical education and assistant ath letic director under jim peelle one of the most popular mem bers of the faculty with both stu dents and associates alike eiken is returning to his former home in montevideo minnesota where he is planning on going into a water softener business in a statement to the spectrum eiken said i will miss ub the students faculty alumni and friends i have made here i have enjoyed my work here and leave with no hard feelings whatsoever i have a very good opportunity in business and i feel that i should take since it will not present it self again mai who was a three letter win ner at the university of minne sota playing baseball basketball and football has been a fine coach and true sportsman in every sense of the word always calm in the clutch eiken is more apt to worry when his boys have a big lead in addition to his fine coaching qualities mai has always given his players a fine example of gentle naughty 20's is theme of varsity show the musical comedy of the year good news will be presented 01 friday and saturday evenings march 9 and 10 by the student public relations committee good news will go on the road for two or possibly more appearances in other new york state cities after its local closing the spicy extravaganza stars connie baldonl don balasky pen ny morano fran perkowski and ed roush others in the cast in clude sam bengart libby rosen bloom sandy robinson larry kel ler sid schacherls pete notaro dick ibbotson and howie schul man henderson desylva and schwab wrote the show which deals with the flapper fantasies of those naughty 1920's the story revolves around tom marlowe a student at tait college who is in danger of being dropped from the football team because he is flunking his as tronomy course pat his current sweetheart induces her shy cousin connie ts tutor tom soon after tom assisted by bobby wins the big football game and also the heart of connie large dancing and singing courses will be featured in the show to add a professional touch to the musical elaborate dance rou tines extravagant scenes and ex quisite costumes will be included varsity drag and the best things in life are free are but two of the many songs from the popular show sprc's interview committee lists the following on the produc tion staff gerry marchette direc tor ed rubin musical director elizabeth dribben stage manager phil aaron and jack davies tech nical directors jan nitsch and cathy girvin choreographers ; sally mcguinn and clarice golan ski properties chairman dolorita boettcher scene designer bobbie rossman costume mistress and lois piesachow make-up chairman final exam invalid in elem economics statement by dr epstein chairman of the department of economics apparently a relatively few students obtained unauthorized prior knowledge of the examina tion questions in order to protect the interests of all students and so as to place no one under a han dicap it was decided that except ing in cases of complete failure all grades in the elementary eco nomics course will be awarded on the basis of the entire year's work when the second semester closes this spring this practice is not uncommon among many colleges in cases of a two-semester course the department of economics has as sured all students that no one's record or standing in this course will suffer as the result of this procedure board memebership now requires a 10 average an up-to-date file of all students participating in extracurricular ac tivities is planned by the newly formed personnel committee of the hoard of managers tom haenle is chairman this file is expected to furnish immediate information on scholas tic standings interests abilities experience evidence of leadership and other attributes of students to furnish the hoard of managers with a ready reference on qualifi cations when considering appli cants for committee posts the personnel committee will also maintain a current list of posi tions open and be charged with publicizing them the hoard has also raised the minimum average for eligibility for candidacy in the board of man tigers elections from 0.7 to 1.0 over all with at least a 1.0 the previous semester it was also decided to hold an orientation program on stu dent government and the board constitution april 6 and 7 in the evening for all candidates this orientation will be given by the leadership training program di 1,000,000 arts center planned the general administration com mittee of nil at a meeting jan 23 in the hoard room of the marine tniht building commissioned paul schweikher chairman of the de partment of architecture at yale university and uh's consulting nr < hitect to draw up working plans and specifications for a music and visual arts building the first step in a new fine arts center the building which will cost ap proximately if 1,00(1 000 will be lo cated mi the main street area of tlie campui following approval of final plans construction will be gin and completion of the building is expected by the summer of 1967 dr claude k puffer acting chan cellor stated that the construction of the music and visual arts build ing lias been made possible through generous gifts received by the uni versity upon its completion the arts building will be used primar ily for classroom space until such time as provision can be made for additional classroom buildings on the campus also it is our hope that as more funds become avail able in the future we can add in the same area a fine artb library and theatre thus establishing one of the best fine arts centers in this part of the country preliminary plans for the music and visual arts building include two units of grey brick glass and steel the units will be connected by high walls of glass paneling in side the walls will be a landscaped courtyard which will ibe used for small concerts and sculptural ex hibits although the committee made no specific recommendation for the other two buildings for the center when they are constructed it is ex pected that all three buildings will be connected by a broad under ground passageway present sketches show that the library will be circular capable of housing over 30,000 volumes and will contain an underground art gallery various university collec tions of paintings art works stu dent and faculty exhibitions will be displayed the theatre will be a teaching theatre with facilities for three types of stages — the standard and opera size proscenium shakes pearean stage and theatre-ln-the round stage other plans for the proposed fine arts center inlcude a parking lot to handle 300 cars another lot for faculty parking and an amphi theatre in the quarry area of the eampnj for outdoor theatre produc tions and concerts dr puffer pointed out the pro posed center is not a
