the spectrum #? complete am pus overage number h i volume 6 c^s university of buffalo friday february 17 1956 spectrum cut possible 4 or 5 issues may be all this term a financial crisis facing the spectrum due to a lack of lo cal advertising was disclosed last week in an emergency meeting of the financial com mittee of the student board of managers with jack pen hollow editor-publisher and norm klein treasurer miss dorothy haas and john wong of norton union also attended the meeting a review of the financial situa tion showed that under the pres ent advertising set-up there is only enough money to publish four or five more issues of the spectrum ten were originally scheduled it was explained that advertising from local merchants is at a low point and that more must be ob tained if the spectrum is to con tinue it was also pointed out that the fund of about 2,100 provided from the student activities fund by the board of managers is not sufficient to meet the regular week ly expenses of the paper it was decided that a special cam paign would be launched in an ef fort to obtain more local advertis ing and that student volunteers would be asked to aid in the drive the finance committee of the board pointed out that the spec trum a year ago required a con siderable additional grant from the board and that it has been a con tinuing problem over the years therefore it was agreed that the survival of the spectrum be left to the students dependent on their willingness to help with the local ad campaign under the direction of tony bartholomew newly-ap pointed advertising manager and norm klein treasurer appointments made to spectrum posts at a special meeting of the publications committee of the board of managers last tuesday evening the following appointments were made to positions on the spectrum : jack penhollow editor publisher ; it is your voice on campus ; don't let it down a campaign for local advertising is being conducted if you have time and are willing to donate it to a good cause come into the spectrum office and say you would like to help out you will be given assignments and instructions the future of the student publication at ub depends upon your immediate action board petitions available now deadline feb 24 the election committee of nor ton union again requests any stu dents who do not have norton union cards or who failed to sign the signature sheets at the time of registration to do so as soon as possible in the assistant director office petitions for candidates runnin for the board of managers can be obtained in the assistant direc's office today through feb 24 the candidates must sign for these pe titions at this time there will be an orientation meeting for all candidates on feb 25 from 1:30 p.m to 4:30 u.m in norton hall roll call will be taken and at this time candidates will submit their petitions in person any violation of the above will be referred to the board of managers by the election committee asking permission to withdraw that can didate from the running we also cordially invite any can didates to the board meetings which will be held tuesday feb 21 and tuesday march 6 at 7 p.m in the board room draft exam set for april the selective service qualifica tion test will be administered here on campus in mid-april all men students desiring exemption from the draft should plan to take this test application blanks should be picked up now since the deadline for filing these is march 5th ap plications are now available in the i office of the dean of students 192 1 hayes hall i bus ad banquet wed feb 29 the bus ad student faculty banquet is feb 29th at the buf falo launch club on grand island tickets may be purchased from any student council member this banquet is being run by tht student council every business student is invited to attend contact a student council mem ber if you need transportation to grand island sprc will present good news on march 9 10 ub's musical extravaganza of the year good news will be pre sented march 9th and 10th by the students public relations com mittee the show written by hen derson desylva and schwab will start a precedent this year by going on the road for a number of ap pearances the story revolves around tom marlow don balasky the typi cal college athlete who is flunking astronomy at tait university pal fran perkowski his current girl induces her shy cousin connie connie baldoni to tutor tom eventually tom assisted by bob by ed rausch wins the big foot ball game as well as the heart of sweet innocent connie highlights of the show include the dancing chorus and several standards from the world of musk . . . the best things in life aw free lucky in love varsitj drag and the title tune goo news as of today rehearsals are go ing full force and the tension is high as all are awaiting the good news . . . good news is here
