the spectrum complete ampus overage number 03 g university of buffalo friday may 4 1956 volume 6 curtain rises on opera tomorrow the music department of ub will present mozart's comic opera cosi fan tutte women are like that at 8:30 p.m tomorrow sun day tuesday and wednesday in norton auditorium heading the cast will be the well known canadian tenor jon vickers singing the part of ferrando the other leading roles will be filled by students of the music department of ub they include ruth john son as fiordiligi with patricia yannello as alternate vivian gi rard as dorabella stanley wieczo rek alternate for ferrando robert bauer as guglielmo evelyn bloom as the maid despina with eugenia annas as alternate ronald beat tie as the cynical bachelor don alfonso with william wagner as alternate the production will be given in english utilizing a modern trans lation of lorenzo da ponte's ital ian text by ruth and thomas mar tin this is the translation used by the metropolitan opera in its successful revival of the work the 200th anniversary of mo zart's birth has brought on a cele bration which far outdoes any ever accorded a musician before the year is up almost all his works will be heard throughout the world the music department's presentation of cosi fan tutte is in conjunction with this bicentennial the ub chorale and a small classic-styled symphony orchestra made up of members of the buf falo philharmonic faculty and stu dents of the university will be under the direction of herbert beattie this is mr beattie's sec ond opera presentation under the auspices of the music department last year he conducted the first performance in buffalo of purcell's dido and aeneas the production will be designed and directed by frank hengerer the manager and artistic consultant is henry hol lenstine tickets may be obtained at den ton cottier and daniels 32 court street and at the office of the music department 260 winspear ave student tickets are at a reduced rate of 1.50 ladies in waiting - on jo be queen mud news page 3 board to check on grades two new senate units set student-affairs sub-committees are announced plans to establish two hew stu dent-faculty sub-committees on stu dent affairs of the university sen ate were announced at tuesday's meeting of the board of managers ur jack e deeringer chairman of the committee on student af fairs asked the board to submit names for student tmembership on the sub-committee on standards for student conduct and a sub-commit tee on greek letter societies the university senate is com posed of elected members of the faculty and administration the committee on student affairs a standing committee recommended that the chairman of the university senate appoint these sub-commit tees dr deeringer stated that the student membership on these com mittees will be an extension of the idea of students and faculty working together in the formula tion of policy affecting student af fairs policies relative to the recogni tion and operation of all greek letter societies at ub will be recommended to the committee on student affairs by the creek letter societies sub-committee membership on this sub-commit tee will include two representa tives from faculty administration and alumni and four students stu dent representation is to include an officer of the ipc and pen-he lenic council one non-affiliated stu dent and a representative of the med-dent student council student conduct standards and procedures for its enforcement will be recommended by the sub-com mittee of the committee on student affairs membership in this group will in clude representatives of the faculty administration and six student members recommended by the board of managers the following students were recommended for the two sub-com mittee by the board sub-committee on standards for student conduct — joan higgins sally parsons dave marsh ard v all committee members must keep averages up the hoard of managers clarified its position regarding marks re quirements for membership on board committees at its tuesday night meeting a precedent was set following a controversy over appointments to the student public relations com mittee the committee had sub mitted its list of new members and officers directly to the executive committee of the board dave truax president of the hoard said we did not wish to step on anyone's toes but we want to establish the precedent that all recommendations must be submit ted to the personnel committee in addition to checking on the grade averages of all new mem bers the personnel committee will check the marks of all the old ; members when recommendations for appointments are sent to the board at the april 25 meeting of the board it was announced that all board committee members must have the following averages chair men — 1.0 overall and 1.0 average in previous semester other mem bers — 7 previous semester and overall average of 1.(1 as a result of the varsity revue the sprc went into debt john malloy finance committee chair man stated at tuesday's meeting si the finance committee will not \ be responsible for any future debts incurred by the sprc on being informed of the board's action ed weeks chairman pro tern of the sprc stated the board doesn't hav e to worry about footing any bills for us we have operated on our own finances in the past and will continue to do so in the future any debts will be paid off by the sprc commit tee a motion was made and approv ed by the board to allow the con tinuation of the sprc's functions until new appointments could be approved dr deeringer brought out the fact that the sprc did not have a forma constitution approv ed by the hoard and lias operated on tradition rather than a consti tution afrote at kleinhans carol ann wilde chosen queen of military ball honorary wing commander last saturday night kleinhans music hall was the scene of the 5th annual afrotc military ball and the crowning of the 1956-57 honor ary wing commander chosen by popular vote this honor was be slowed upon miss carol ann wilde by colonel charles 0 jantzen pro fessor of air science at ub miss wilde's court of honorary group commanders consisted of miss monnie hodges representing the group and miss carol kruzicki 577th group all of these girls were selected from a group of ten hon orary squad commanders miss wilde is a sophomore in the school of arts and sciences majoring in german in extra-cur ricular activities around school carol is active in several norton committees the german club and at the present time is secretary of the awards committee for moving up oav * ' continued on page 8
