the spectrum number 4 volume 7 j g university of buffalo friday oct 19 1956 new band will lead rally sam asks review of scoring methods in trophy dispute in an attempt to gain the inter fraternity sports trophy sigma alpha mu fraternity has called for i review of the past year's scor ing methods and expulsion of the points awarded in last year's golf tournament the sports trophy is awarded annually to the fraternity scoring the most points in the intramural competition in june of 1956 it was announced that sigma alpha mu and phi kappa psi were tied with 85.5 points each an error in the scoring found phi psi trail ing by one half of a point phi psi had been awarded second place points for volley ball after losing in the championship game to beta sigma rho however in this case where two separate leagues play for a cham pionship the championship game does not count in the won-lost rec ord — thus both teams beta sig ma rho and phi kappa psi were awarded first place points this was where phi psi gained half of i point making the final scoring i hi psi 86 sam 85.5 protests golf results marv talish along with two aides came to a heated special session meeting of the sports com mittee but did not give any ac tual evidence of unfairness in last year's competition he was sharp ly criticized by chairman don diet rich for this lack of a keen under standing of the dispute's nature talish requested that the golf tournament results b e thrown out mi the basis of cheating on score riirds he claimed that padded scores were turned in with altera tions and fill-ins by some golfers who never even completed the is holes no actual proof of such prac tices were given at the meeting but record of protest by theta chi was mentioned the protest was rejected by tom neil intramural director and three members of the ifc on the grounds of insufficient evidence talish then switched his objec tion to the fact that jim urbanski varsity golfer and member of phi kappa psi fraternity officiated over the tournament he reasoned that the entire tournament was bi ased in this respect the sports committee voted to give sam until today to gain ac ceptable evidence to prove their case if non e is presented all claims by sam will be thrown out football results questioned officially nothing can be done about the golf tournament be cause there is a rule in the ifc that calls for a protest within 24 hours of the contest in question in an interview with don carrel representative of sam in the ifc council he stated that the sports committee can only recommend in this case the final judgment lies with the main body of the ifc it self in spite of the 24 hour ruling on protests the flimsy constitu tion of the ifc provides for a re jection and reversal of the sports committee's ruling talish also questioned the scor ing results in the football compe tition sam claimed that they had a 1.000 percentage average and should not have received fifth place this question of the rules was explained by chairman diet rich in allowing ties a half game win and a half game loss tally sam's entire effort rests in re jecting the complete sports report since it is too late to reject indi vidual contests this will call for computation of points for the sea son 1955-1956 part of which was under the administration of don dietrich present chairman and jim lane previous
