the spectrum complete ampus overage number 8 university of buffalo friday november 15 1957 volume 8 ivy bulls add harvard to 58 card the bulls will play harvard sept 28 next year at cam bridge mass announcement of the very important addi tion of the time honored crim son to next year's ub sched ule was made thursday by the bulls elated director of athletics james e peelle with harvard the bulls now have two major colleges on the 1958 schedule earlier columbia was announced for an oct 25 in vasion of buffalo the addition of harvard offers further tangible proof that the uni versity's five-year program of ath letic development instituted by chancellor furnas rs going ahead full steam the university's ability to land a spot on harvard's sched ule reflects said peelle the high esteem in which chancellor furnas and his policies concern ing intercollegiate athletics are held by the outstanding schools harvard the country's oldest university offers one of intercol legiate football's finest traditions the cantabs have been playing football since 1874 despite having played close to 750 games since then harvard has actually faced only about 75 different opponents a fact which points up the compar ative exclusiveness of the harvard football schedule coach john yovlcsin's arriv al from gettysburg this year where he gained nationwide ac claim with his small college powerhouse teams was heralded as a calculated step forward to reyive the crimson's gridiron fortunes which sagged consider ably after world war 11 results are already apparent this year's team has defeated co lumbia and a supposedly strong perm team within the ivy league and a tough ohio university club from without while losing three games to date head coach offenhamer pleased by progress of past 3 years in spite of an upset at the hands of cortland last saturday and a tough game tomorrow with lehigh head football coach dick offen hamer was all smiles yesterday when he talked to spectrum re porters about the game with har vard next season the coach had special words of praise for chancellor furnas and athletic director jim peelle for the progress and faith that they have shown towards the present flve-year athletic program we are progressing at a faster rate than i expected in this the third year of the pro gram the colgate alumnus said it will be an honor for me to renew old acquaintances with the ivy league and for the school to compete against a university wun the high academic and athletic prestige of harvard said coach offenhamer athletic director peelle add ed this is the kind of team that buffalo wants to play we are not interested in commer cialized football and neither is harvard in preparation for the game against the crimson offenhamer announced that assistant coach fred dunlap will travel to new haven next weekend to scout the cantabs when they oppose yale tackles in action photo by poul henry getting in shape for tomorrow's lehigh game are 700 lbs of tackle from the left are fran woidzik george delaney and jack welch new disease doodling is no relative of flu by jill rubenstein a chronic disease of the college student is beginning to break out on campus slowly at first and now is gradually growing in intensity this malady has no connection with the asiatic flu nor is it com municable it's bound to hit every one sooner or later and there is no known prevention cure it affects the fingers usually those of the right hand and occasionally spreads so that a movement of the whole arm is in evidence it is veri tably inescapable it is called doodl ing doodling takes many forms and varies with the personality male or female artistic or otherwise the doodle bug can bite anyone doodl ing is used as a means of recrea tion communication vocation and consociation to start at the root of all evil let's take doodling as a vocation there are a blessed few among us who are endowed with an abun dance of knowledge or previous night's preparation in.certain aca demic subjects at this point the doodle bug comes into play spreading his neatly covered books out before him the said mental wizard pro ceeds to scrawl casually short meaningless phrases across his tools of learning meaningless that is to everyone except the fellow sitting next to him who more than likely has had an unofficial addition to his regular tuition fees the fact that doodling is a means of recreation to the individ ual is fairly obvious but lately doodling has branched out to in clude more than one person and has now become a more sociable past time this new aspect of the old favorite is known as droodling and is a sort of guessing game the droodler doodles to his heart's content encloses his droodle result of his doodling in a frame and affixes some meaning to it the droodlee person who is being droodled at then proceeds to guess the hidden meaning behind the picture this goes back and forth and finally begins to resemble a mild form of insanity the final and possibly most im portant function of doodling is con nected with communication this form is prevalent in the female sex and is by 1 far the most ingenious four lads star tomorrow night to cheer for ub kappa nu fraternity will hold their stardust serenade saturday featuring the four lads the dance is semi-formal and will start at 9:00 p.m at commodore hall on genesee st the lads will present two 40 minute shows and music by the don rose band will be continuous from 9 to 1 the able emcees will be guy king tab smith and fred dy klestlne of wwol in buffalo the four lads will attend the buf falo-lehigh game and help to cheer the bulls to victory tickets are available at norton union or at the door bulls aim for upset against engineers starting lineup revised by matt winick lehigh is the best split-t outfit around and in fact the only one left that works it well this opinion was ex pressed by john stiegman head coach of rutgers after they were beaten 13-7 by the engineers ~— tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 it will be the task of dick offenhamer's bulls to defeat this great outfit the game which will be played at rotary field will mark the sixth meeting between the two schools the brown and white have won four while the fifth game ended in a scoreless tie dan nolan the opponent's all east quarterback will lead the team from bethlehem he is an exceptional passer and a fine play caller also he is a great run ner and will run if the opportunity presents itself / lehigh coach dan leckonby had this to say about his great player dan nolan could make the pros he can move and run well and pass going either to his left or right halfbacks dick pennell and charlie burger and fullback walt pijawka round out the starting backfield buffalo assistant coach fred dunlap called pijawka the most underrated man on the team dunlap said he is a hard runner excellent blocker and great line backer the battle of the day appears to shape up in the line lehigh has a line averaging 205 pounds while üb's line weighs about 200 pounds per man tackles pete williams a 230 pound all-east selection and walt bianco and guard don macclymont will head the forward wall of the visitors which will also include ends joe wenzel and fred daley guard john stanley and center tom de flavis frank woidzik and joe o'grady the two all-east linemen of the home forces are set to go against them the long awaited battle be tween williams and woidzik will not take place since both are left tackles and they will not be oppo site each other buffalo coach dick offenhamer has discussed last week's 20-0 loss to cortland as just one of those things he said that he and the other coaches have plenty of surprises in store for lehigh but would not elaborate any further however he did mention some of his proposed lineup changes bob adams will start at right end in stead of dick schwertfager while jack welch will start at right tackle if he is healthy and if not george delaney will get the coach's nod there is a possibility that lou reale will be shifted back to center if bill brogan is available at full back as offenhamer hopes if bro gan is not able to play then remo damiani will be the pivotman at the opening whistle while reale will return to fullback the re mainder of the line will have bot tini at left end woidzik at left tackle and o'grady and chuck ti rone at the guards jim allegretto will be the start ing quarterback and will be flanked by halfbacks willie evans and bob muscarella ken born will be held in reserve along with dick van valkenburgh who can play quar terback and left half the ub coach is hopeful that jim keats will also be ready for service at right half lehigh 89 wenzel le 78 williams lt 65 macclymont lg 54 deflavis c 64 stanley .'. rg 76 bianco rt 82 daley re 20 nolan qb
