frosh steering's mixer tonight page 5 education north and south editorial the university or buffalo spectrum olume 11 friday november 18 1960 no 9 flaster president of novice debaters the yearly program of the novice division ot the debating society lis shitted into high gear last i rk the co-chairmen of the novice division bill hansen and howard plaster attended this year's first forma meeting of the western sow york collegiate freshman de kite conference at d'youville col lege the major item on the agenda was the annual election of officers howard blaster of ub was elected president for a term of one year mr flaster is sports editor of the spectrum the first tournameut to be held parly in january was also dis missed karlier in the afternoon ub si i ved as host to a novice team ii inn canisius college in the first of the home conference debates representing ub were keith hick llng and howard flaster affirma tive and linda allien and bill hansen negative the i*ll debat ers took both decisions debating he national question a team of novices accompanied by a varsity team attended a i panel discussion and debate at colgate university last saturday novices joan sullivan and keith j hickllng affirmative won a deci sion from an ithaca college nega tive team while mike shapiro and bill hansen negative lost to a long brockport affirmative team award-winning varsity debater ken cross attended as scout and served as a competent critic for the novices the varsity debaters successfully participated in one round of ortho dox debate and one round of cross examination debate debating for the varsity were rodney batts dave elliott sheldon evans and myrna livingston alternate times are being sched uled for those students who are unable to attend the regular thurs day afternoon meetings a supple i ment to the debate program is : participation in individual events i such as oratory extemporaneous speaking after-dinner speaking j and oral interpretation students hue welcome to stop in at crosby 127 to discuss the program with janet potter or william baker howie flaster lockwood open stacks provide students with more advantages by e j frank 1-ist june the btacks of lock wood library were opened to pro !' a closer union of students with the literary material of the university library system then circulation has md d 23 william b ernst assistant director of the ub librar iid this week adding that al though there has been some minor fusion the new system has ed to everyone's advantage v the moment the campus f>b house approximately 5*50,000 v minies however a deep concern lie past has been the lack of llldents use of these facilities expected that by elim the middle man in procur lie books the students would ''" further enticed into availing "" selves of books there is al v 1 - a member of the lockwood ! pub lications mr ernst a harvard graduate has done considerable work with his alma mater's library system and looks upon the university's facilities as expanding to meet the needs of the departments of the institution although at the moment itiil t ii lacks in certain areas mr ernst said that this deficit will be met in the near futnre and he is of the opinion that buf falo has a very good start modern journalism in order to further the new ap proach to campus news which we call the new look four mem bers of the spectrum editorial staff will attend the associated collegiate press annual confer ence in chicago monday through wednesday the three-day conclave will place emphasis on techniques of journalism with special atten tion to advertising reporting and editorial policy the staff members attending the convention held in chicago's con rad hilton hotel will be fran willner managing editor b j frank news editor paul speyser associate news editor and barbara cohn associate copy editor the trip will include a tour of the chicago sun-times and speeches by prominent american journalists workshop groups will give the participants a chance to disuss problems peculiar to the itb1 t b newspaper silver wonderland is theme of this year's silver ball the silver ball committee is busily planning this year's dance on dec 9 in the golden ballroom of the statler-hilton hotel under the direction of lenore leone the decorations will follow the theme of silver wonderland using silver white and emerald green the tower cafeteria and norton will be brightened by colorful dis plays of silver bells pines and snow in order that resident students may attend the dawn breakfast at norton dormitory hours will he 1 extended to 4 am a highlight of the silver hall tin mr formal contest has the campus corner of buffalo in addition to the trophy he himself will retain best cam paigner will also be awarded ■trophy members of the mr formal com mittee include the following jo seph mlletta general chairman pat opalinski carol janecki mag gie flynn connie kopler pat cale and carol zawadski campaigns for the mr formal contest will begin on nov 30 the results of the judging on dec 6 and voting on dec 7 and 8 will be announced during the intermis sion of the silver ball candidates are judged on grooming and personal appear ance 10 points personality emotional and physical level of maturity 10 points and suave ness polite polished tactful 6 points groups of campaigners are judg ed on cooperation adherence to rules which include financial limi tatiuns enthusiasm of campaign ers for candidates originality and total effectiveness these five points will count equally biology greenhouse now being erected by sally freeman construction underway next to the health-sciences building will eventually yield a new biology greenhouse the structure when completed will house three separ ate compartments connected to a head portion which will be used tor preparation of materials the purpose of tie new green house is two fold it will be used as a research facility by members of the faculty graduate students and advanced biology majors sec ondly the greenhouse will be used lor teaching purposes throughout the department it is felt that the greenhouse will prove very valuable to students in tli laboratory as a means of relat ing their studies to life through observation the structure will provide students with an opportun it to examine biological speci mens and to experiment with ideas of their own by actual growth tests the greenhouse is financed by a grant from the national science ; foundation which is matched by the university completion date foi the project is scheduled for next spring greenhouse going up on campus wilson meets with commuting freshmen to plan activities by deanna daniel more than 600 letters have been sent to commuting freshmen in viting them to join the newly expanded norton house plan the house plan is a program designed to give these freshmen an oppor tunity to meet others on the cam pus the students are grouped ac cording to free hours and each group meets once a week in nor ton the groups are autonomous and can plan as many or as little activities as they desire to provide experienced lead ers for the new groups a three-phase leadership training program has been initiated by richard j wilson assistant coordinator of student activi ties mr wilson has chosen 12 members of last year's fresh men house plan to head the new freshmen groups the group leaders will meet with mr wilson every wednesday evening during the first phase of the program which will continue through the spring semester the group lenders will discuss the im mediate problems facing the house plan in the second phase of the program which will begin next fall they will explore the soc ial and intellectual problems of freshmen and sophomore college men one of the most important topics to be discuss ed is the possible growth of impersonal relationships on üb during the final phase in the program the group leaders will expand their discussions to include isocial and political problems of both national and international im portance mr wilson said that this pro gram is designed to produce not only fine house plan leaders but will also develop future civic lead ers as well
