adver tising agencies are not allowed to enter engineering students protest traffic snarls on winspear a bottleneck created by chang ing the campus exit opposite park ridge to a one way roadway go ing out this week brought pro tests from the student council of the school of engineering in a letter to the spectrum l 11 runk president of the council ailed this designation a gigan tic mistake explaining that it has caused mammoth daily traffic jams where none existed before the tie-up in the morning is often fantastic he said while the old entrance is completely free of traffic the problem lies in the fact that parkridge itself is one way going the opposite way causing all driv er on both parkridge and the campus road to make a necessary mm onto winspear further in order to enter the campus from winspear drivers have to bypass the driveway at the traffic signal and make the turn at a driveway further up the street which is con rolled by no traffic signal an which is difficult to locate the diagram below submitted by the engineering school makes clear the difficulty of the traffic situation with the opposing one way roads acknowledging the fact that the intersection poses a problem alex ander j welk superintendent of buildings and maintenance said this week that an alternate plan is under construction by which the roadway on camus would be come one-way only at certain hours in the evening mr welk explained that the designation was originally made to create a feed way for night-school traffic the provision has proved however to be a hazard in the morning when students coming to 8:30 classes have had to sit in their cars wait ing to turn into the campus drive way as classes start without them mr welk commented further that the university is now work ing with the city in an attempt to change parkridge to a two-way street this week's issue as you've probably already noticed from the weight is four pages more than the usual spectrum the increased size is devoted to expanding our weekly's cover age and to bring to your at tention a now perennial and serious problem our theme is safety and your problem is how to have a safe and sane life in spite of our reckless road runners we have attemtped to bring to light some safety hazards on campus pg 5 in the city it self pg 4 and have empha sized the desperate desire for carefulness as our students head their own separate ways next week for christmas va cation hansel and gretel setting records in attendance by carol ferrari hansel and gretel the current production at baird is setting at tendance records for the music department according to richard marshall general musical and stage director the huge response anticipated for the children's ma tinee performance saturday at 2:30 pm resulted in the perform ance being moved from baird to amherst high school another performance sunday at 4 pm is sold out the humperdinck opera's popu larity says richard marshall dir ector is due to its appeal to chil dren based on the well-known grimm fairy tale the production is replete with fantastic characters and dramatic stage effects such as an exploding oven that showers sparks over the stage the technical director is henry a wickl jr and choreography was done by lois lancaster the first student to be used in a crea tive capacity in a musical pres entation tickets are still available at 1 for performances tonight and to morrow at 8:30 pm reactor services already in demand by sharon l pudaloff james carey evans general manager of the 2,000,000 nuclear research center stated that the nuclear reactor located in the cylindrical section of the building will be going into a period of cali bration which will last from jan uary until april we hope that the reactor will be ready to serve the area at the time of the dedication date activation of the reactor will necessitate the introduction of personnel safety measures in or der to guard all those working in the research center from radia tion charts keeping track of each person's exposure will be kept as well as readings on pocket dosi meters and film badges which will measure individual contact with radiation the electronic particle accelera tor which is housed in the rec tangular section of the center's building is in operation now a buffalo industry was the first buyer of the accelerator's services as chartered by the board of regents the nuclear research center is a non-profit organization the money that parties pay to the center for use of its facilities will be used to offset its operating costs projects of all parties wishing to purchase time for the use of equipment will be studied by a committee headed by dr ralph lumb to determine the most effective type of radia tion to be used and the safety precautions necessary one type of treatment that might be possible in the fu ture is that of brain tumors developed by dr william h sweet of the harvard medical school and the mass general hospital dr gordon brown ell assistant professor of nu clear engineering at mit and dr lee farr of brookhaven national laboratory by this method a patient receives an injection of boron which moves selectively to the tumor in the brain he then is plac ed beneath the reactor beam thermal neutrons in the beam do not damage the brain tis sue but cause the boron to emit alpha particles the par ticles travel only a fraction of an inch before they decay that distance however is suf ficient for them to destroy cancerous cells within the tumor if this experimental equipment now being used by a hospital in drookhaven l.i proves to be suc cessful mr evans expressed it is hoped that in the future the nuclear center will house equip ment which could be used jointly with roswell park memorial in stitute for the treatment of can cer he also stated that the building plan of the center was drawn keeping hoped-for improve ments in mind making the struc ture adaptable to the new gains in equipment mr evans resides with bis wife in their home on wlllardshire road in east aurora he has been the general manager of the nu clear research center project since 1955 from 1939 to 1944 mr evans was the assistant secretary of the curtiss wright corporation and in 1944 he became executive assistant to dr clifford furnas the director of the research lab james c evans silver wonderland tonight with mr formal
