for a successful spring weekend and then there was life beta sigma rho's contribution to rhe spring weekend parade re vived the over-all trophy for the best float the award was presented at the iance last week the prize-winning wntry which depicted the story of also won first prize in e male unlimited division the parade theme was say it with music divisional tirsc place winners ere female unlimited class theta hi's rhapsody in blue limited uale class sigma phi epsilon's carousel second place in the over-all di v:sion went to berlin melody alpha epsilon pi's float in which i model tank knocked down the berlin wall third place went to sigma kappa sorority for sen tenced to sing sing in the female unlimited class second place went to sigma kap pa and third place to chi omega for their dream along with me entry second and third prize in the male unlimited division were awarded to sigma alpha mv and phi kpsilon pi respectively in the limited division second place went to pi lambda tau while alpha epsilon pi received the third place trophy the marching band led the pa rade which moved down main street to the campus chancellor clifford furnas preceded the floats in an open convertible he was followed by the 40th annual spring weekend queen kathy stuber of theta chi sorority will it really be ready by september 7th alumni weekend to be held on june 7 by john kowal with the induction of the class f 1962 on june 9 üb's seventh an nual alumni weekend will begin included on saturday's program will e a family outing tours and open aouse on campus and the tunk ent which orpens at noon the highlight of the evening will be he alumni dance to be held at the buffalo athletic club the idea behind alumni weekend is to keep the gradu ates in touch with the school instructors and old friends campus tours and open houses will feature saturday after noon so that the alumni can familiarize themselves with the new and ever-expanding campus parents of the gradu ating class are also invited chancellor furnas and the gen eral alumni board officers will induct the class of 1962 on the steps of lockwood library after wards a barbecue lunch will be available from 1:00 till 4:00 the alumni tunk tent will open at aoon and free beer will be served until 4:00 about 1:30 chancellor furnas will present some up-to-date infor mation on state u in 62 some of the questions he is expected to answer are who will be admit ted to the new university can i get financial aid from ub and what kind of instructors will i get the clark pool will be open from 1:00 until 4:00 and a scuba diving exhibiton is tentatively planned a german band will play on cam pus during the afternoon in past years according to theodore siekman director of alumni relations many of the young alumni couldn't attend because of problems with their families to relieve this prob lem free kiddie rides a little league baseball game and an open swim at clark pool have been planned the climax of the day will be the alumni dance from 10 un til 2 in the ballroom of the buffalo athletic club for the first time this year's graduating class has been invited sunday june 10 alumni week end will close with the annual commencement at 3:00 on file steps of lockwood library at the dance the 2nd annual walter b cooke alumni award will be presented the general alumni board established the award for a non-alumnus of the university whose services are of such high order that the recipient is worthy of the highest commen dation mr cooke although not an aumnus of the university was an active member of the council a one-time acting chancellor and the organizer of two capital gifts campaigns which established ub on sound financial footing new student union nears completion the formal dedication of the new student will take place saturday nov 10 it will culminate a week of intensive activity in the new quarters these events are now being planned by a seven-student dedications committee under the chairmanship of ethel goller george f chambers director of university development heads the faculty committee arranging the dedication ceremonies during the week of nov 5-10 the activities will be planned in order to make full use of all the building facilities pro fessionals in such sports as bowling and billiards will be invited to give exhibitions of their skills noted figures from the world of science and the arts will be invited to deliver lectures to round out the week of activities it is likely that the cafeteria and the bookstore will stage spe cial events such as food special ties and raffles friday of dedica tion week an open house will be held for students and faculty the dedication itself will be held outdoors and will include an act of initiation such as the presentation of a key or the cutting of a ribbon all present plans are tentative last band concert to be given sunday the combined concert and uni-1 versify bands will perform sunday i nflei'noon the concert will be held at 3 in front of baird the program will be under the direc tion of frank j cipolla band di rector this will be the last appearance of the band this year they have performed at basketball and foot ball games and at the various school functions throughout the year appreciation for their efforts could be shown by a large attend ance a program of operatic scenes and a one-act opera a hand of bridge will be presented by the opera workshop under the direc tion of richard marshall wednes day at 8:30 in baird the program includes scenes from such works as don giovanni macbeth carmen and rigoleuo as well as a hand of bridge admission to both programs is free and both are open to the public schedule next year affects ub events by kathleen shea the new student calendar for the coming academic year has been recently announced by union board president carol ann ven detti the changes will affect man campus events from the examination schedules to stunt niirht performances academically the most signifl | cant change to take place is the i mid-year exam schedule the lame i duck period following winter re cbbs has been eliminated instead ' examinations will begin immediate ly after students return from va cation jan 3 since exams will end on jan 11 the registration date for the second semester has been changed to jan 17 and 18 this is two weeks earlier than this year's date mid-year commencement will however remain at its present feb 22 date the year's three recesses will i be thanksgiving nov 21 to 20 | winter vacation dec 21 to jan 3 spring vacation march 9 to 18 homecoming weekend will be i held a week earlier next semester it will center around the dela ! ware football clash oct 13 both the homecoming dance and the silver ball will be held in the ball room of the new union the latter 1 will take place dec 15 stunt night has been changed 1 from its first semester position to i take i prominent part in the i spring weekend festivities this weekend will be held april 26 and 27 because of this early date and also because of the difficulty in obtaining parade permits no pa rade will be held next year instruction for the second semester will end may 10 ex ams will continue from may 13 to 21 commencement will be on sunday june 2 miss vendetti also commented on the additional events that the union board will sponsor these will include concerts to be given by big name popular groups and a stepped-up program of pep rallies also at least two informal dances a month will be held in the new union as a part of the orientation program an open house for all students will be held on sept 8 carol vendetti new senate appoints board & judiciary appointments to the publica tions board and the student judi ciary were considered and ap proved at the last meeting of the student senate tuesday night ri chard amacher david bycina and kart'ii miller are he new members of the publications board jack segman who served an interim appointment this semester will be on ttu board again next year linda freeman and jerome mar shak both juniors were named to the student judiciary committee this committee has the power to suspend issue fines levy social probation to remove a group from action or to withhold recognition to any campus group mi>s kreeman who is also chair man of the activities committee announced that her committee will initiate a political scientific and united nations program for next semester these programs which will extend over a week or week end will include seminars lectures and panel or discussion groups the council of religious clubs announced that malcolm x who was scheduled to ap pear may 17 in norton will be on campus thursday instead malcolm x a member of the black muslim group will speak in norton auditorium at 1 a motion was also passed grant ing the law school a 730 loan until september the law school is financially independent ot the senate however for the past couple of years they have re quested senate funds to cover their additional expenses the i,aw school receives a percentage of the student activity fees but they have found this to be inade quate the law school will have the alternative of raising the activities fee or giving up their fiscal auton omy and coming under the juris diction of the senate finance com mittee if the law school decides to come under the finance com mittee the loan will be considered as an appropriation national fraternities appealing to the state the ub national fraternity and sorority alumni council in a fur ther attempt to aid greek nation also on campus met may 10 at that time it was announced that dr thomas hamilton president ot the state university system would meet with the state uni versity trustees june 14 to discuss the fraternity and sorority system on campus at the meeting roger gratwlek dean of men reported that all the nationals had submitted letters to him on the benefits of keeping na tional groups on campus he stated that ho had wtitten a re port which will be incorporated with the chancellor's report and which will be used as üb's case to keep nationals in existence at the i'nlverslty university
