the spectrum complete ampus overage number 15 volume 8 university of buffalo friday march 7 1958 arts faculty still debating 2-year plan the deans arud faculty of the col lege of arts and sciences are still in debate over the acceptance of the proposal for a two-year uni versity college which would en i nipass the first two years of study in all day-time undergraduate pro grams the proposal as laid out by a special committee of the senate headed by dr oscar a silverman has met with approval in the schools of business education in its and engineering but its ac n ptance has been prevented by the oi position of the arts and sciences college the proposal as sent to all fac ulty and deans of the university stated that if the two year pro gram as presented by the senate be acceptable to the faculty and the council of the university the chancellor and appropriate offic ers will proceed to set up as soon os possible a two year college the curricula of the new uni versity college as proposed will insist essentially of the first two years of offerings in the college of arts and sciences pre-professional sequences required by senior divi sions or by professional schools and the programs presently in the division of general and technical studies the proposal continues upper divisions shall retain control over admission of students to their pro gram such students shall be ad mitted to their upper division on successful completion of the re quirements set by that division the plan calls for a single admis sion policy and set of standards for all freshmen entering the univer sity counseling and advisement would be co-ordinated in one cen tral system instituting a general centralization of admission pro cedures the tentative arrangement al lows for the future possibility of admitting as is now done in mil lard fillmore college part-time students who do not meet normal entrance requirements such mar final students if they complete cer tain remedial courses and are otherwise deemed satisfactory mitrht then be admitted to full standing in the university college the two year college would also include courses necessary for en tering the liberal or professional curricula that an entering fresh man might lack such preparatory courses if needed will be offered ' n an accelerated program but without university credit easter recess is unchanged it was decided at monday's meet irig of the deans council that there would be no change in the official university calendar this semester 1 here had been considerable spec nation that due to the four day losing of school for bad weather that the easter recess might be shortened somewhat t was pointed out though that nilividual instructors might make u p for lost classes at other than scheduled hours at their own dis c ction your last chance today get your ticket now so you will be able to attend the annual junior prom tomorrow night winter carnival to be best yet if the snow stays by janice memel winter carnival is getting off to a great start the bongo board contest started monday as sched uled and it is drawing a great deal of interest one contestant has already been on for two hours and was then told to get off any others reaching the two hour mark will be competing against him on fri day starting at 2 pm all will have their own board to ride simul taneously the fashion show which was to be held friday afternoon will not be held because the season is al most over and interest is very limited instead the bongo board contest finals will start at two under the norton steps at 2:30 pm the ski movies will begin while the bongo contest progresses following the ski movies will be the favorite fairy tale costume contest - the sitzmarkers are an ticipating a turnout equal to the snow sculpturing event for this so don't miss it it begins at 3:00 pm sharp with girls organizations competing first then the beard growing contest will be judged at 3:30 following this the men's groups will be judged on costume you will also see the contest win ner shave himself with his new remington rand electric razor many organizations will have al ready begun plans for their sculp tures by collecting snow inside their plots the carnival should be enjoying its first success in 4 years—if the snow remains on saturday there are many events planned ski jor ing geschmazzle races ski jore jumping and judging of snow sculptures many have asked what the geschmazzle race is the best way to describe it is to say contestants are lined up on top of a hill next to baird and race down the slope each trying to reach the bottom first however the racing area gets narrower as you descend and at the bottom of the slope there is room only for one person to cross the finish line skis will be supplied free to any contestants for all of the skiing fun why not join the fun satur day from 10-2 and then watch the snow sculpturing judging before trudging home to prepare for the junior prom sigma phi epsilon loses pledges rushing tactics ruled illegal by ifc at their meeting tuesday eve ning the ipc by a vote of 11-3-2 approved a recommendation of the violations comm against sigma phi epsilon fraternity preventing them from pledging rushees this semester the action stemmed from a complaint by phi kappa psi which charged sig ep with a rushing infraction because a dance of sig ep's conflicted with the formal rush dinner given by phi psi according to the new coopera tive rushing plan approved by the ifc in mid-january formal rush parties would be the last week of pledging with the fraternities di vided into six groups each with a specific night sig ep's dinner was set for tuesday evening with phi psi on friday all informal rushes were banned for that week an informal rush being any party where non-frater nity men are in attendance sig bp was found in violation of this rule after it had been determined their dance could be classified an informal rush in another rushing infraction upsilon beta was found inno cent of charges brought by rho pi phi ropes alleged that upsilon beta had violated the ipc constitution by indicating their intention of na tional affiliation queen's coronation at prom tomorrow honoraries to tap four experts on beauty and fashion will face three flow ing ub co-eds in norton tonight for one of these hopeful girls will be the ermine-wrapped queen of the junior prom surrounded by white roses and tht r strains of pomp and circum stance the queen will be presented her pearl tiara by chancellor fur nas the all campus prom starts at 10 o'clock tomorrow night in kleinhans we have picked four judges a hair stylist a fashion coordinator for a leading department store the owner of a fashion salon and the head of a model agency said dan gadra general chairman in addition to the regular phi psi trophy the queen will receive a lady's electric razor from the winter weekend committee student voting for the queen held on wednesday and thursday will count 50 of the total score for each girl the remainder of the scoring will be determined by the judges on such points as beauty personality and poise the hopeful queen candidates will be marilyn lockwood arts and sciences judy pelson education and marie saccomando arts and sciences members of the junior prom committee will act as host and hostesses at a taculty reception which will precede the dance from 8:30 to 10 pm at kleinhans new members for cap and down and ilisonhead will be selected at a tapping ceremony during the grand march at midnight the danceable music of boyd raeburn and his orchestra will be heard from 10 to 2 boyd and his band are currently heard on colum bia records his vocalist wife ginnie powell has sung with harry james char lie barnet and gene krupa for the first time the board of managers leadership award will be awarded clear the buffalo airwaves campus radio station set for operation by june by ann matzinger üb's much talked about radio station will be a reality before june am broadcasting is expected to start before exams but fm will not be ready until september john romer president of the student group in charge stated that the pm programs would be broadcast from 4 pm - 12 am daily except for weekends in the meantime negotiations are being carried on with a local sta tion concerning a possible hour each week on the station which would be devoted to ub exclusive ly the students would make tapes on campus predominately musical in nature and give them to the station vice chancellor puffer has sanc tioned the use of two studios and a control room in the liaird music building for the broadcasting the transmitter is being transferred from the engineerng building to the tower the electrical engineering dept has supplied the em equipment but there is still more needed the acquired equipment consists of a studio console and transmitter music copyright by the american society of composers authors and publishers will be broadcast from campus as the station has obtained a license from ascap the national association of broadcast employees and techni cians also is allowing students working on the station to do so without joining the union this is because of the educational nature ot the proposed programs with ur lincoln harter direc tor of information services as ad visor the offices of the croup work ing on the station are as follows i'resident john homer secretary - john wav g h program dir • jack mettauer chief engineer 4 parking permits now available for student lots students may now apply for a semester parking permit which will permit them to park in either the bailey or crosby student lots the semester charge averages about 75c per week thus benefit ing those who use the parking lots more than once a day applications are available at norton union and at the bursar's office 230 hayes hall these appli cations will be approved or dis approved by the student union board of managers parking com mittee and reviewed by the uni versity treasurer applicants will be notified by postcard of the action taken if ap proved he should stop in at the bursar's otlice the following friday to pay the prorated fee based on the approximate number of weeks left in the semester j a receipt is given the applicant i which he then takes to the mainte nance service building between 9 am and 3 pm where a special decal is placed on his car and a key issued to him this key will oper ate only the two gates nearest the gym of the bailey and crosby stu dent lots the fee decreases each succeed ing week by 75c for the week ending march 15 it is 11.25 in cluding a 3 key deposit the key deposit is refunded whenever the key and receipt are turned in to the bursar's office continued on pace 6 make-up exams a reminder applications for make-up examinations for the removal of incomplete grades will be accepted no later than monday march 17 make-up examinations begin april 21
