but the initiation of an establish ment of such a center requires both months of planning and substan tial funds the university of buffalo has well advanced plans for a nuclear research center and is in a posi tion to proceed promptly with its construction the bill stated dr henry t heald president of the ford foundation with josef krips conductor of the buffalo philharmonic orchestra and as the two maids the play is directed by mrs julia ii pardee and the technical direc tor is mr irwin atkins irwin atkins set designer for the drama department's spring play shows a scale model of the set publications committee laxity cited by dorsey directory asterisk suffer by anthony drake the student publications committee which controls the publication of four major campus publications has not met once this year with the school year well in the second semester the activities of the buffalonian the spectrum the asterisk and the student directory are still undefined pend ing this committee's action the editor and managing edi tor of the spectrum and the editor of the buffalontan have beep work ing despite tho fact that they have nol been officially appointed the asterisk and the student direc tory are no longer in existence due to the committee's laxness the main difficulty is getting to gether the three faculty advisors of the committee according to the constitution one faculty member must be present in order to hold meetings despite three meetings scheduled by senate president tom dorsey it has been impossible to scrape together a quorum said mr dorsey when fac ulty members are asked to serve as advisors to student committees they should not take the responsibility unless they are willing to devote the necessary amount of time to it the three faculty members in question are dr harold boner mrs hildegarde shinners and mrs bonnie pomerantz it makes me very tired that they can't spend one evening or afternoon a month with this com mittee a majority of the student members have attended every ses sion that has been called when we experienced attend ance difficulty at the meetings i requested the faculty advisors to swbmit their schedules so that we could make plans more conven ient for them two of the three advisors did not supply any sched ule as requested continued mr i lorsey the fate of the asterisk student literary magazine is typical of the situation which resulted when last year's asterisk editor left of bee lie submitted the names of two successors to the publications committee the approval of this commit tee is necessary for their ap pointment and as the commit tee has not met the editorial staff of the asterisk was never organized therefore there will be no asterisk this year it is unfortunate that this com mittee never saw fit to meet said the ex-editor of the asterisk the university is known to the general public mainly by its extra-campus functions such as sports and stud ent publications a publication like the asterisk therefore has a cer tain amount of prestige value for t lie i'nlverslty at the beginning of this year i sent a letter to the student pub lications committee requesting them to appoint or hold elections for a replacement as they never got around to doing this the as terisk cannot be published this year he continued student members of the com mittee are evelyn l.iuer jean conn prank carberry and daniel cadra ? . heald urges preparation of specialists a leisurely pace in education is no longer sustainable stated dr henry t lleald president of the ford foundation monday in an ad dress at the university of buffalo mid-year commencement at klein hans music hall to assure the progress of a mod ern industrial nation dr heald said a university must prepare a diversity of specialists the citizen specialists for a modern industrial democracy compares to the citizen soldier in washington's day to achieve this we must have a set of values and assign priorities to them in allocating our re sources to attain these objectives generous and sustained support for our urban universities is essential dr heald declared another highlight of the univer sity s commencement program was the presentation by dr cliftord c furnas chancellor of üb of the annual chancellor's medal to an outstanding citizen of buffalo the medalist chosen this year was josef krips conductor of the buffalo philharmonic orchestra mac donald girls to honor scudder the macdonald hall girls will honor dean jeanelte seudder at a formal tea sunday at 4 pm in ihe macdonald ljuunge among those invited are chan
