the spectrum complete am pus overage volume 9 university of buffalo friday march 6 1959 no 17 blue masquers denied funds house committee advises permanent use of norton rooms be discontinued by anthony drake to be or not to he — that is the question blue masquers have been asking themselves for the past week the student dramatic organization has lost its appropriation from the senate finance committee and now faces curtailment of its facilities in norton senate finance committee chairman dick virkus informed the blue masquers that their re quest for an appropriation of 131 was denied he later commented that poor student attendance at masquer productions and the lack of quality of these productions made the expenditure of student fees for their support unjustifiable this attitude was concurred in by senate president tom dorsey who said i could not justify fur ther student support of the organi zation the blue masquers were then called before the house commit tee of norton union at this meet ing the blue masquers were re quested to supply a written list of members and officers an in ventory of equipment and props and the minutes of all meetings held this previous semester tne points of discussion were to be the use of facilities and unnecessary activities and occupancy of the 3 rooms they use in norton would permit only one-ac plays the requested material was pre sented by acting president marvin winer who claimed the organiza tion had a membership of 30 per sons of whom an average of 15 20 regularly attended each meet ing further inventory lists of props costumes make-up lumber flats furniture and lighting equip ment were provided the house committee asked mr winer why the office was in use for non-masquer business they pointed out that frequently the office was occupied by only one or two persons who did not seem to be engaged in any activity con cerning theater no explanation was offered . . with reference to the finance committee's denial of funds the masquers observed that their pro duction activities would be cur tailed and would restrict them to doing non-royalty one act plays of inferior quality noting that blue masquer plays were student directed house committee chairman dick wolin said we feel that plays should have professional guidance put in a lot of time miss terrell o everett mas quer's faculty advisor explained that she herself advised and as sisted th group she also empha sized the importance of learning by-doing which could be accom plished by the masquers only if they directed their own shows to the question does the blue masquer competency merit con tinued existence miss everett replied the blue masquers shouldn't be compared with pro fessional or departmental produc tons they should be compared only with themselves the suc cess of a show — even a broad way production cannot be fore seen until the show is seen by the public if professional help is used in blue masquer production their purpose will be lost when the meeting was opened tci general questioning mary win er related that he considered the masquers a good organization a lot of people put in a lot of time at least 20 people work very hard on our productions mr winer also agreed that any arrangement whereby the blue masquer facilities were made available to other groups on cam pus would be satisfactory he pointed out that the masquer of fice is used by stunt night per formers and other groups mr dave marsh ass't direc tor of norton explained that sometimes i come into the mas quer office and find one or two persons in the room who are do ing nothing just ordinary chit chat ." it was observed by miss everett that much of this chit chat involved plans for future productions 500 pupils to visit us tomorrow tomorrow the university will
