the spectrum complete cmpus overage volume 9 university of buffalo friday march 13 1959 no 18 mutual initiative called key to successful student-faculty action whenever the subject of ub student government is broached it is most often greeted by the monotonous jeer ■apathy the student body has been upbraided several times for its apathetic attitudes and recently has swung in the direction of the faculty as well remarking that his to find faculty advisors for vari ous student groups have been met by replies of i don't have time john okoniewski ass't coordina tor of student activities ob served the apathy of the facul ty angers me it manifests itself in an attitude of negativism they talk about student-faculty rela tionships and the students work hard in this direction but the faculty does not reciprocate i feel this is unfortunate because the values both can receive are im measurable dr richard siggelkow dean of tudents said that he considered the problem of student - faculty tolitical relations a two-way street some faculty members are very anxious to serve and have not even been asked part of the iifficulty lies in the student ap proach it is definitely the stu nts who should take the initia te in approaching and informing their faculty advisors he said dr siggelkow continued some faculty members have oeen derelict in their duties but this is by no means the entire story some student committee members have not met yet with f heir commit tees according to the constitution of the student senate the vice president should coordinate these various activities it might help that officer contacted the com nittee chairman and worked out lome arrangement to remedy the ack of personal contact student senate president tom dorsey observed the senate has lad excellent relations with its idvisors their attendance has jeen very good and they have made aluble suggestions none of the standing committees have faculty idvisors however due to an ad ministrative oversight three of the standing com mittees have not met this year re continued they are the stu dent activities committee the student academic affairs com mittee and the student welfare committee although they do have neetings scheduled they have not is yet come together this is partly the fault of the chairmen lor not calling a meeting and partly my own fault for not getting after them to do so matters have been referred to these commit tees from as far back as oc to'oer regarding personal contact by senate officers mr dorsey said it would take too much time vluch as w e would like to do it it s quite impractical he also announced that the sen lte's own problem of non-attend ince had been solved since an imendment was passed restricting the number of unexcused absen ces a member could maintain batista atrocities cited a cuban speaks out for castro by jill rubinstein the furor over the cuban rev olution has died down in the united states somewhat but to the cu ban-american it is still a very real and vital issue we inter viewed tony arias of cuban birth who works as an electrical ngineer here in buffalo and who each year returns to his homeland to visit his family there tony was in miami at the outbreak of the revolution of january ist and proceeded immediately to cuba on receipt of the news tony told us that there were only five or six people who dared to take the plane and when they arrived in cuba nobody there knew about the revolution people knew something was going on be cause they played only music on the radio we asked tony how the people of cuba felt about the uprising and the arrival of castro himself i never saw so many peo ple together and happy i don't think there was anybody > ante that day ". n view of what we had been eartr.g here in the states it was irprising to us to learn of this unanimous approval we mentioned this to mr arias and he commented that it both ered me to read the papers here especially the editorial complain ing about the executions what they don't talk about is that ba tista was doing tar worse things everybody in cuba knew that - i live there tony showed us a few issues of bohemia a popular magazine in cuba the three issues pub lished directly after the coup were a series called un millon de ej emplares certificados or one mil lion certified examples it had been proved that batista had been responsible for over one million political killings and the series was a kind of mass obituary the pictures we looked a here brutal beyond descrip tion there was one article showing torture instruments such as we would associate with the middle ages many of the major victims were students and former students of the university of cuba castro himself graduated from this school you could say that the revolution was really started by the students tony commented dr pelayo cuervo president of the orthodox party had been fa mous all over the americas this party is in opposition to batista and against corruption in govern ment in general the order for cuervo's slaying came directly from the former dictator political life iii cuba is very veiling the trouble with politics in my country is that most people are in it just to get money the people who tried to change tne political system became the victims of batista's regime tony arias at women's convocation bernice weinstein dean scudder and dr blanding make the most of college dr sarah blanding urges we are living in a different but exciting time take your col lege experience and make the most of it — as a wife citizen and cul tured individual emphasized dr sarah gibson blanding president of vassar college in an address to a women's convocation in nor ton union speaking on the topic of my fair lady's future dr blandl ing portrayed the role and prob lems of modern women in analyz ing the beat generation'of to lay she stated that the description of youth has been as lonely self centered anxious and insecure and that these are only half truths anxiety and loneliness are not denied or feared . we must lcairn to cope with them and even find therein a source of strength miss blanding boasts a heri tage steeped in southern culture a native of kentucky her grand father served under general lee during the civil war her fame has spread into international circles as a woman of political and intellectual ability the convocation under the gen er
