the largest turnouts in recent years and resulted in the election of a split ticket to the student senate over 1700 went to the polls in the voting which concluded yesterday afternoon the united students party and the action party split 22 seats with three others going to independents there is still one vacant seat us won three of the four at-large berths jim riley president marianne hasler secretary jim fox vice-president dick adams treasurer plans drawn for mud queen contest by iris zeldner it's spring both officially and weather-wise men's thoughts are turning to base hall and well girls what bet tor time than spring weekend lo select the fairest of them all tony serfustini mud queen committee chairman and his com mittee members carol mehlrose loni conroy pat kenyon roger williams paul evans madeline i'lir-hs and sanford scher expect at least three queen candidates both indent voting and judging will determine the winner for those of you who have never ii • n the mud queen campaigns it will he new and exciting it is just as exciting l for the oldtimers at üb even more so since you remember the enthusiasm of past campaigns hut as in any campaign there are rules and regulations here they 1 campaign'ng will officially be gin on april 29 and will end on may 10 at which time all campaign material must be removed 2 posters no more than one per building except for norton union where two are permitted these are i be no larger than 14"x22 1 and must be approved by the general office of each building slingers none allowed on walls and all painted surfaces of build ings interior and exterior also win dows and doors those placed on blackboards must be attached with masking tape they are allowed on trees and lamp posts if attached with string they may not be put up before april 29 oilcloths must be cleared through the assistant directors office stick ems three sets in norton consisting of 12 elements no limit on the sidewalks prohibited paint or whitewash en buildings as well as oilcloths nd posters hanging from or be tween trees or lamp posts 3 stunts and use of loudspeak ers there will he no campaigning by loud speakers airplanes live an imals or automobiles on campus sidewalks with the following excep tions loudspeakers may be used luring one's stunt and during the ten - minute period to an nounce that one's stunt is occur ring organizations will be able to use the two outside speakers for the ten-minute period between • lasses when announcing their ac tivity the groups will have to find their own loudspeaker system for mplilicat.ion furthering their stunt tony stated at a recent mud i ommitlee meeting that a candi date may have two official backers ii bhe is a member of a sorority organisation or the school of nurs ing that group is necessarily con sidered an official backer april 5 is the due date for queen applica tions which may be acquired in room 255 norton union wont to be an editor application forms are now avail able for students interested in erving as editors on student pub ications for the academic year 60-61 they will be available at he candy counter and a box will be provided for their return a eof " < hour will be held on friday april 8 at 3:30 in the west room all interested students are invit ' d to attend the deadline for filing applications is monday april 11 contest set to pick name for new dorm by jack e freedman the spectrum in conjunction with the university council will sponsor a campus wide contest to select a name for the new girls dormitory to be completed by oc tober 1 if you have ever wondered how a building gets its name you would probably be surprised to learn that the procedure is a complicat ed one and sometimes is not com pleted even years after the build ing is standing such is the case with our present men's hall the tower the tower says dean scud der is an interim name which the university council has the right and privilege of renaming at a later date at a privately supported insti tution such as ours a building is usually named for friends and benefactors of the university whom the council wishes to honor when the time comes or person arises to whom such an honor should be given the interim name will be changed such is the case with the tower and now of course with the new dorm an interim name may last for a period of months or years the j time of change is unpredictable the tower's name has of course j lasted for three years in addition to the honor of se lecting the name for the dorm the spectrum will award the winner a 25 united states savings bond students or anyone else connected with the university in any way are eligible to submit names in case of duplicate names the one re ceived first will determine the winner each week the spectrum will print some of the best names it has received with the student faculty member administrator etc whose ingenuity has dreamed it up so get to cogitating and sub mit your entry to the spectrum op flee either by mail or via the let ter box outside the spectrum of i flee the sole judging and selection of the winning name will be by the i'niversity council and its sub-committee the general admin istration council , stalag 17 opens this tuesday tuesday marks the opening of the drama and speech depart ment.'s comedy melodrama stal ag 17 according to henry a wicke jr director the play which will be presented in baird hall will also be performed on wednesday friday saturday and sunday at 8:30 there will be a saturday matinee at 2 o'clock a portion of the show will be telecast this evening at s:3 by wned-tv channel 17 the cast includes peter bickford paul cohen fritz gaylord mike glass jack grizzard daniel hop j pe richard mcginnis dorm pot ter daniel a powell jay reidel joe sanelll al mclean herb por dum richard seiden paul spey ser harry spillman jerry starr and david vallari irwin j atkins serves as set designer and technical director donna l resman is the assistant director paul appeared at the sa hara hotel in las vegas warbled commercials for schlltz newport and zest and they are columbia records recording artists you"ye read about them you've spun tneir platters and now you will see and hear them at ub the hi-los the mud committee has tried to plan a week that will capture the fun and excite ment of moving up day high on the list of entertainment will be the appearance of the hi-los on may 13 at 8:30 pm in clark gymnasium the hi-los are comprised of gene puerling clark burroughs bob morse and don shelton since t.hey llrsl established their new complex harmonic singing a tew years ago they have been the number one vocal group in the country and have won every major music poll for vocal groups band leader jerry fielding discovered the group and arranged for thuir first record date on the now defunct trend label they have worked concerts with judy garland and johnny mathls played clubs such as blrdland and have been seen on the nation's top television shows including red rkelton steve allen and rose mary clooney the hi-los re cently completed a three months tour of europe and they are plan ning another tour in the near fut ure trudi genco chairman of the cencert emphasized that this will be one event no student will want to miss ticketß are 1 per per son and will be sold in norton un ion 6 hours credit for soviet tour the university ot iluffalo sum mer session will sponsor a trip to northern europe and the soviet union in connection with a course in recent and contemporary his tory of the u 8 8 r the tour includes interviews and discus sions with soviet officials schol ars factory and collective farm managers participants have an option of taking the course for credit six semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credit is available upon registration and the completion of course work and a paper or ex amination dr karel hulicka the tour di rector will instruct the group and accompany the students through out the trip a fee of 1800 includes tuition and registration arrangements for time payment may be made through the university bursar for more detailed information write to the director of
