today by fran willner the special events committee o norton union is proud to present brie hass the socialist labor i'arty's candidate tor the presi dency who will discuss his platform at 2:30 this afternoon in millard fillmore lounge of norton i'nion mr hass will touch on such points as the means to a real and isting peace and the road to enuine freedom the socialist labor party states there is of course no excuse lor the fact that millions go to bed hungry every night in a land that has a food surplus that is a sur plus of food commodities for the market nor is there any excuse for poor housing in a nation possessing m il means of construction so too there is no excuse for low standards of living and for the inability of most workers to reach those low standards when the means exist for producing far more than our needs today it is literally possible to rebuild the social world in which we live but to do that we must recon struct society on a socialist founda tion when that is done mankind will have abolished poverty and created a society in which the well being of every individual will be the goal of the collectivity the public is invited to attend mr hass address today there will be no charge tor admission the speech will be followed by a ques tion and answer period ub's band on the go at games cheerleaders pep up spirit too by ed brandt l-ast year a meager little group ef 34 marched onto the football field tried to do things right but only made tools of themselves that was the university of buf falo marching band nobody want id them so they hid themselves in the dreary halls of baird until that day when somebody would shine a light and come to their aid that light was to come very soon alter the end of the football sea son held in the hands of dean richard a siggelkow and miss dorothy haas they gave the band i budget new uniforms and a lot f encouragement inow tne iootoaii season is open md the new ub marching band will be making its appearance to morrow at the game at rotarj held 1 went to the practice field to see the band and i was com pletely overwhelmed by what 1 saw almost sixty strong marched iown the field with a precision worthy of some of the best march ing units their strongest poini is their response to the drill com mands it will take some time however before the formations will take the shape of those of the wisconsin and michigan bands bob o'connell band susan friedman cheerleader captain bonnie grimm majorette toni hayn cheerleader co-captain carl van alter band pepping up the games arffa appointed new head resident this year the appointment ot a new head resident for men has been announced he is marvin arfta mr arffa is a graduate of syra t'niverstiy where he received i a.h in psychology and the uni iiy of buffalo where he re ceived an m s in l > sychology he attended the university of da for a year's work in psy chology he is presently attending ub for work on his ed.d in guid ance and counseling mr arffa's aims for this year are to try to enhance and facili tate the academic progress of the students and to help them to ad just to new academic situations he feels his greatest obstacles thus far have been students mov ing to various rooms just as a student becomes accustomed to one room he is moved to another edward selleck robert glass dr harry rosamila judges for homecoming kampus karnival will orbit oct 22 for outer space outer space is the theme of üb's annual kampus karnival to be held on next saturday from 7:30 to lv pm followed by a dance in norton from hi to 1 sponsored by the council of re ligious clubs this year's annual karnival promises to be one of uli's best proceeds from the night will go lo the world university service an organization of amer ican students who send aid to for eign students in devastated coun tries booths already announced include an outer space beauty parlor and a shoot ing at the man in the moon booth booths are being set up by various fraternities sor orities dorms and religious ciubs on campus organiza tions that wish to participate in the karnival may pick up an application for a booth from miss ann hicks in nor ton alpha l'hi omega fraternity will announce the trophy winner of their annual ugly man contest at the kampus karnival ugly man entries will be accepted until mon day the picture of ugly man con testants will be on display in nor ton october 17-21 chairmen for the karnival are elmer bertsch general chairman marsha rosengarden publicity and mali a kull finance mr carl zietlow chaplain for the student christian association is handling the fund-raising for the world university service last year's kampus karnival raised over 600 for the wus this year's karnival hopes to ex ceed last year's profits kampus karnival chairmen maila kull elmer f bertsch marsha roserjgarden queen to be crowned oct 29 during homecoming weekend by judy talarico this year's homecoming commit tee under general chairman christa pruda is planning tib fall week end during homecoming weekend oct 28-211 alumni will be coming to join the students in cheering the hulls on to victory a queen for the weekend will be selected out of freshmen appli cants applications available at norton candy counter and fresh man residence halls must be turned in to miss haas office in norton by 4:30 pm monday there will be . general orientation meeting for all candidates at that time in the kast room marilyn tober chairman ot the friday night program reports that a dance at norton from s pm to 11 pm free to students has been planned at 11 pm the ten semi finalist homecoming queen con testants will be presented and narrowed down to the top three linalists one of these three fresh men girls will then be crowned and presented with her royal robes immediately following the crown thomas will visit campus on monday norman thomas predicts that neither socialism nor communism will prevail in the world of 1980 but rather a new form of garrison state capitalism"—in which govern ment and big business will have merged if both the u s and russia follow present trends and we manage to avert a nuclear holocaust mr thomas thinks the two systems will reach approximation in about 20 years—with our form of open capitalism growing more powerful and state-controlled and russia's tight form of state capitalism softened to include some free enterprise campus sane and the de partment of sociology of the university of buffalo are spon soring mr thomas who will speak on the student and his future in a nuclear age mon day at 12:30 at norton dr elwin 11 powell chairman of the buffalo chapter of the com mittee for a sane nuclear policy announced this week the forma tion of a univer sity of buffalo chapter of sane s a n e is a na tioual organiza tion committed to the goal of total world disarma ment under un supervision dr powell an associate profes sor of sociology at the university of buffalo said that the primary function of sank was to generate grass roots sentiment for disarm ament sank is opposed to uni lateral disarmament but feels that tangible progress toward a curtail ment of the arms race could be achieved if the american public so demanded he pointed out that the people through indifference rather than intent had failed to support president eisenhower's efforts to bring about arms reducton that in difference in turn springs from a lack of information and awareness which sane hopes to correct sane wants to stimulate discus sion debate and serious study ot the implications of disarmament sane is not a pacifist organiza tion instead it believes that a ra tional multi-lateral disarmament can and must be negotiated norman cousins editor of ■the saturday review of liter ature is the national chair man be to throw money in gallon jars at a booth in either norton union or kampus carnival each iar will be labeled with the name md picture of a candidate each cent contributed will count for one vote the proceeds will be donated to the damon runyon me morial fund for cancer research md are earmarked for cancer re search on virus tissue which is presently being conducted at üb this'is one election where you are ut'kd to stuff the ballot box the winner will be announced at the kampus karnival dance he will receive the ugly man key award his picture will appear in the spectrum and local papers in addition he will be awarded an inscrib ed certificate from the damon runyon memorial fund the sponsoring organization wil have the candidate's name and its name engraved on the award plaque any organization which wins this plaque three times in succession keeps it last year's winner was richard demunda ol alpha phi delta the contest is sponsored by the epsilon sigma chapter of alpha phi omega national service fra ternity all organizations who wish to sponsor a candidate for the ugly man contest are urged to send in his name and picture the larger and weirder the better send all entries u box 41 norton hall to day candidates will be accepted until 3:30 pm monday all candi dates are urged to meet at the ugly man booth for a group picture at the same time proclamation whereas alpha phi omega is a service fraternity looking for men ugly men during the week of october 17 through 22 whereas votes for the winner will be in the guise of moneys which will be donated to the da mon runyon memorial fund for cancer research expressly for sup port of cancer research at the university of buffalo whereas on saturday october 22 the council of religious clubs will sponsor a kampus karnival at which time the winner of the ugly man contest will be an nounced and at which other uni versity groups will maintain fund raising booths whereas money raised at the kampus karnival will be donated to the world university services a world agency to which the inter national student community may turn in time of crisis for housing health care and emergency aid whereas it is both fitting and proper that university students support these worthy causes with their donations and at the same time gain a measure ot enjoyment he tt hereby resolved that the week of october 17 through 22 b
