creative man known throughout the world for his musical compositions david diamond will join the staff in the cniversity of buffalo's music de partment for the coming spring semester mr diamond comes to buffalo near his native rochester n.y as slee professor of composition announcement came from uii chancellor clifford c furnas the appointment will return mr dia mond to american shores after an extended stay in italy slee professorships were estab lished by the late alice and fred erick slee providing an outstand ing composer-in-residence on the ml campus at all times mr dia mond succeeds ned rorem other recent slee professors have in hided aaron copland carlos ' haves and leon kirchner the diamond sound in mu sic has been acclaimed for years leonard bernstein feels his music can be recognized immediately both as to style and quality bernstein con ducted diamond's fourth symphony with the new york philharmonic in 1958 — and got rave notices this past year the new york phil harmonic under assistant con ductor seymour lipkin play ed his the world of paul klee david diamond has for a num ber of years lived in the quiet atmosphere of florence italy his home there has become the cen ter for his creative activities in addition to the musical mam cripta scores and sketchbooks here are numerous paintings fin hed and unfinished attesting to is love for a newly-acquired cre ative outlet david diamond he speaks six languages and is studying his seventh russian he is an accomplished violinist — an instrument he was playing at the age of 7 without lessons — and plays the viola and piano as well mr diamond's formal education in music began at the age of 13 and carried him successively from the cleveland institute of music to the eastman school in rochester to the dalcroze insti tute in new york by 19 he was winnink awards for his orchestra tions and three times he received guggenheim fellowships among the 44-year-old artist's major works are his first and second symphonies the romeo and juliet suite the fourth symphony and his popular rounds for string or chestra early in his career diamond played violin in the lucky strike hit parade orchestra and from such diversified experience he has emerged as a distinguished lec turer on various musical topics currently he has recently com pleted his seventh symphony and is working on his fifth which he says has given him great difficulty he will have every opportunity to continue his creative work in his university of buffalo post he will teach a limited number of intermediate and advanced stu dents of composition and will conduct one class in form and analysis in addition mr diamond will present a series of public lecture recitals in which he will be as sisted by faculty and students mu sicians and leading performers from the buffalo community and the concert world departing slee prof ned rorem to give last lecture-recital more questions answered will bp the topic of the final hfceital in a series presented this term by ned rorem the visiting slee professor of music duo-pianists arthur gold and robert pitzdale will be featured fh the program with perform ances of works by bartok and polyene admission will he free for this dnal program in mr rorem's ser ; s of eight lecture recitals the wrformance will take place at capen hall at s:3o pm on jan 26 and will be followed by a recep tion sponsored by the music de partment manuscripts of all of mr ror em's lectures in the series are available at baird hall mr ror em expects that the manuscripts will be published in book form in extended t helping hand to one of their fel low students who is in need just before the christinas vacation samson obi the nigerian student here at l"b made a plea to the campus for hooks so that be may start a library for his people when he returns to nigeria next year the spectrum editors opened their office to aid mr obi and the response has been overwhelming books of every kind have been donated as well as a set of ency clopedias from miss tera patter son i has been discovered how ever that many students have hesitated in bringing their books to school for they were not too sure where to bring them and when for this reason the spectrum has arranged to set up a booth in the main lobby of norton to re ceive any donations that the stu dents want to make the total of books collected will be posted at the counter in norton a list of donators will be published in the fed 10 edition of the paper any one who has already donated books and didn't leave their name should contact the spectrum for those who missed the arti cle in the spectrum mr obi has made a plea for any old books that the students no longer have use for any book from child nursery rhymes to advanced phys ics will find its way to the library ] that mr obi wants to build when i he returns home to nigeria i have many fond memories to lake back with me to nigeria states mr obi my years in america have been happy and filled with many new and interest ing things that i can help my peo ple discover any books that i receive will be a great aid in help ing me teach my people the way of life that i have had display a clean-shaven chin and to present student identification cards judging wjll be held on feb 24 during the winter carnival the j winner will be announced that evening at the civil war centen i nial ball | judges will be students who are on the winter carnival king and queen and beard growing contest committee the winner will be chosen on length of beard neat ness originality and general ap pearance civil war is theme of winter carnival by rozzie mandelcorn a fun filled week on ub campus will start on monday february 20 the freshman class will present l the second annual winter carnival the theme this year was announc ed by general chairman kenny segal to be the civil war cen tennial " that monday afternoon a coffee hour will be held in millard fill more lounge special guests will be the couples entering the king and queen contest a variety show will be present ed in norton auditorium the next evening after the show a dance featuring eli konikoff's dixieland band will be held in the millard fillmore lounge auditions for the variety show will be held this wednesday in the auditorium from 2:30 to 5:30 friday afternoon in norton a winter fashion show will be held campus corner's and country corner's clothes will be worn by models from the freshman class the highlight of the week will be the civil war centennial hall to be held in the golden ballroom of the statler hilton hotel on fri day february 24 jay maran and his orchestra will provide the mu sic the winners of the beard growing contest the snow sculp ture and the king and queen con test will be presented trophies tickets are 3 a couple saturday will be winter sports day busses will leave from cam pus in the morning to go to a near-by ski resort skiing tobog anning and possibly ice skating will be featured that evening a special attrac tion will be conducted during half time of the cb-cortland basket ball game the girls of the fresh man class have challenged the boys to a basketball game there will be four contests held before and during the week all you men who hate to shave can apply for the beard-growing con test applications for the king and queen contest wll be taken febru ary 16 and 17 also in norton all upperclasstnen are invited to en ter into competition the king and iiueen will be elected by couple so pick your partner and be ready to campaign the elec tion tor tlte royal couple will take place only at tuesday night's dance snow sculpture applications will be available february 15 16 and 17 in norton there will be two classifications — colored sculpture and white mr winter carnival will be visiting our campus starting feb ruary 4 anyone who can find him by asking are you mr win ter carnival will win two free tickets to tuesday night's dance horn students who decorate their windows with winter carnival posters will also be eligible to win tickets to tuesday's dance the ticket committee is offer ing a special package plan lly imying your tickets early for fri day ed brandt appointed successor the student publications board announced this week the appointment of ed brandt as spectrum editor following the resignation of the present editor jack e freedman mr freedman who has served as editor-in-chief since may 1960 terminates his office with this issue the final one of the semester mr brandt will take over until june at which time next year's editor will be chosen a farewell from our present editor appears on page four the following is the official student publications board statement issued by its chairman stuart a gellman with deep regret the student publications hoard ot the univer sity of huffulo has been asked to accept the resignation of jack e freedman as editor-in-chief of the spectrum we have complied with this request expressing our thanks to mr freedman for the job he has dune in upholding the quality of newspaper the hoard feels is neces sary for our growing university after a month deliberation we have appointed mr ed brandt to succeed mr freedman rjpoh investigating mr brandt's jualiflcations both on campus and from a scholastic standpoint we are contldent that his leadership will guide the spectrum to unuther successful semester it is with this belief that we offer our heartiest support to mr brandt and his staff for the coming semester ed brandt left and jack freedman this 12th edition of the spec trum is the last paper for this semester with final examina tions beginning jan 16 the spectrum will not appear again until feb 10 any copy for that edition should be submitted tc the spectrum office by 2 pm
