orientation week 2700 frosh in class meet in dances talks orientation for the 2700 fresh men of the university of buffalo officially began yesterday with the issuing of the traditional blue and white dinks buster or rather the wooden replica of the official student mascot was hidden by the freshmen steering committee following yesterday's frosh con vocation according to steering committee members the bull was hidden with a card next to it the finders of this coveted trophy will take the card to the assistant director's office in norton union from there the word will be spread so that frosh can remove their beanies and the lucky discoverer will have his name inscribed on the permanent plaque in the nort on trophy case if the bull is not found the frosh will have to wear their dinks until the steering committee grants permission for them to remove them orientation week moved into full swing wednesday as the dor tnltory students arrived to be settled in their new quarters due to the crowded conditions forced by the record freshmen enroll ment this year incoming frosh were billeted in not only the dorms but the allenhursl apart ments and several other off-cam pus locations as well the moving was conducted with the aid of alpha phi omega service frater nity and under the guidance of several upperelassmen who aided the newly-arrived frosh in becom ing familiar with the physical lay out of the university tonight the orientation pro gram will continue with dances set in norton union and the dormitories for all freshmen the split in locations is neces sary due to record size of the incoming class and commuting students will be tripping the light fantastic in norton while the resident students make merry in the dormitories tomorrow features two main activities in the varsity opener against gettysburg at 1:30 at ro tary field in the evening the norton union board is holding an open house with a roaring twen ties theme for tomorrow's game students are requested to enter through the bailey parking-lot entrance and will be asked to furnish either ii cards or id card claim-checks as sufficient proof of enrollment although too of the newly con structed seats are designed for student use it has been suggested that the students arrive early as a large turnout is anticipated a coffee hour will follow tomorrow's game and will be held in norton dixieland and dance bands will be featured at the evening socials and silent and talkie movies will be shown through out the affair the evening is open to all members of the university community and is scheduled in norton from 9 until midnight sunday afternoon the campus religions organizations will hold open house sponsoring receptions in norton and in their respective halls wednesday afternoon the announcement was made by the director's office of norton that an addition to the orientation pro gram must be made in the form of a reception by the canterbury club in norton classes will begin monday for all students and the frosh will enjoy a week of hazing leading to the sophomore court on friday this year's court will be held on the library steps and attendance it mandatory for all freshmen from the chancellor to the more than 2600 members of our largest fresh man class in history and to those other students joining us for the first time this semester i wish to extend a special welcome to this the 116 th academic year of the university of buffalo our very capable and dedi cated faculty and staff join me in this greeting and in inviting each of you to be come shareholders in the tra ditions of scholarship that are the university in these most exciting and challenging of times i can not overemphasize the im portance of academic ex cellence in preparation for your future which is the fut ure of our nation and of our way of life nor do i wish to overlook the cultural and social oppor tunities of the university and their complementary sig nificance in life preparation in these areas as in academ ic pursuits the university of buffalo offers a wide range of opportunities for self-im provement and development that each of you will pur sue vigorously the promise of a university education is my fondest hope during campus career student association band drills for football games cippola to direct training by carol chasen the ub marching hand will make its firsi appearance this sea son at a show tomorrow when the bulla meet gettysburg college on rotary field the alma mater and a select ion of school fight songs will be played during and bffore the game from sunday tbrough wednes day of this week the first com pulsory camp was held for band in embers in i laird music hall ninety people participated in the intensive training in drill and music morning rehearsals ran from s in to 12 followed by a short break for lunch in the tower then the band members were back out in the hot sun drilling until 5 in the evening and after a short supper returned to the grind in bairtt a brief respite came in the form of wben-tv cameras which filmed director frank cippola and the band for news reels mr cippola newly appointed director of the ub marching hand in concentrating full time on the organization and its activities along this line mr cippola has already developed new fundrtmen tals and routines for the band members to follow more compli cated drills then were previously uh-ed will be incorporated into the orientation rules the following are the rules governing o-ientation week and freskrreo activity during this period as ; ssued by the sopho ince court 1 dinks must be worn at all tim a s except while in class es meetings dormitory rooms an-.i cafeterias 2 identification badges must be worn at all times 3 no freshman may walk on the grass 4 no freshmen may use the passage way through the lib rary 5 the sidewalk from the li brary to the main entrance of norton is off limits to fresh men 6 all freshmen are required to attend sophomore court to be held next friday on the steps of lockwood library 7 summonses will be given out for improper actions and when requested to do so for this purpose a freshman will supply all of the requested in formation 8 all offenders will righteous execu tive officer on trial for mutiny others in the cast include daniel j maiback peter hickford paul speyser 111 joseph sanelli joseph sordetto richard mardirosian mi chael steese donald parisi and 1 rosa hales the dramatization of wouk's novel tells the court martial pro fed ings against a young upright lieutenant who relieved his cap tain of command in the midst of a harrowing typhoon on the ground that the captain was psy chopathic in the crisis and direct ing the ship and its crew to deal ruction the odds and naval tradition are against the lieutenant but as the witnesses and experts some unwittingly comic cross the scene of the trial the weakness in the character of the captain is slowly revealed in a devastatingly real picture of disintegration tickets are 1.50
