welcome you to the i'niversity of buffalo's there's no business like snow business included in the events of the weekend are a king and queen contest ski exhibition va riety show sled race jazz concert snuow sculptures toboggan party skating party and semi-fromal dance it takes the efforts of many people to make a weekend such as this opportunity to thank all those who have aided in the preparation of this weekend the committee chairman for their hard work and efforts the advisors for their co operation and support and all the people who have generously offered a helping hand enjoy yourself in the tradition of previous winter weekends sue cherry chairman winter weekend sue cherry crowning touch of weekend will be coronation of royal pair a king and queen will reign over winter weekend applica tions must be turned in to the assistant director's office in norton by tomorrow at 4 the contest is open to any full-time student judging of the contestants will take place thursday the final ists chosen will be presented to the student body at the coffee hour following the dog sled races the coffee hour will be held from 4 to 5 in millard fillmore lounge final judging of the contestants will take place at this time the king and queen will be crowned at friday evening's jazz concert by a guest celebrity the royal pair will receive a plaque with their names inscribed on it which will be placed in norton theme submitted by terry gerace terry gerace accepts award terry gerace submitted the win ning theme ot the 1962 winter weekend there's no business like snow business was selected from approximately 40 entries re ceived during the theme contest week for his winning entry terry received a ticket bo the en tire weekend sapp to appear with bel arte trio tonight for the last slee lecture the final slee lecture and recital in the series three modes of mu sical communication will be pre sented tonight the recital will he held at 8:30 in capen hall allen d sapp chairman of the niusic department and visiting slee professor for the fall semester will lecture appearing with mr sapp for his lecture entitled the corporate experience will be the bel arte trio composed of members of the boston symphony orchestra mem bers are samuel mayes cellist jos eph de pasquale violinist and jos ph silverstein violinist mr sapp has given lectures at brandeis university the university of chicago and the salzburg seminar in american studies he studied composi tion with walter piston aaron copland randall thompson and nadia boulanger he also taught at harvard uni versity and wellesley college american music and nineteenth century european music are his special interests among his major works are two suites for orchestra three over tures a string trio piano trio three violin sonatas four piano sonatas three chamber cantatas and sev eral song cycles a reception will be held in the student lounge immediately fol lowing the concert buffalo snowstorms aid ub sculpturers one of the main attractions of winter weekend is the snow sculp ture contest the theme for this contest is there's no business like snow business work on the sculptures will begin thursday at noon colored sculptures will be judged on the basis of 65 points white sculptures on the basis of 50 points final scores will be based on percentage judging will be held saturday at 10 am awards will be present ed at the dance saturday evening freshman class will entertain at thursday's talent variety show curtains will rise in nortoi auditorium thursday evening for the freshman variety show the performance will begin at 7:30 and the price of admission is 50c stag 75c drag the first entertainers of the eve ning will be arnie cominski and dick crandell singing and strum ming on the guitar eugene mela ville will give his own version of the gi irene rubenstein will sing ti for the audience followed by lou bowman on the piano key board the four frantic fresh men ronnie acker maxine berman sue glaser and linda coen will give their rendition of the first five months at üb bobbie uragin will dance folk dances and frosty will play the guitar later jimmy horton will sing various popular songs includ ing one of his own arrangements anita waugh will act out a skit she put together while phil santa maria will serenade the audience on the electric guitar during intermission marilou thompson will play the piano the emcee for the evening wilt be chris rores hard at work rehearsing are from the left sue glaser bonnie brazin ronni acker and irene rubenstein dan santi and combo to swing at concert for winter frolicking dan the music man santi and his combo will present a jazz con cert friday as part of the winter weekend festivities the concert will be held in norton audtiorium at 8:30 the yellowiaekets a choral group from the university of ro chester will be featured following the concert there will be a dance in millard fillmore lounge where the king and queen will be crowned cost for the eve ning is 75c stag or 1.25 drag kiss me kate cast is listed the music and drama depart ments will present cole porter's kiss me kate at baird hall march 9-11 16-18 performances will be at 8:30 tickets are on sale at the llaird box office for reservations call tf 7-3000 ext 67,2 richard marshall producer an nounces the following cast wil liam wagner in the part of fred graham or petruchio miss dor othy le brum as lois i/ane or bianca elaine kussack as lilli vanessa or kate other members of the cast in clude michael steese richard roth jacqueline hansen eric steese donald guastaferro rich ard seiden john boylan peter bickford robert sagan and larry bearce the show is based on shake speare's taming of the shrew with book by bella and sam spew ack and music and lyrics by cole porter irwin j atkins drama and speech instructor will serve as director boris baronovic ib tech nical director and costume stage designer more k-9 corps dogs on campus no students to race as huskies this year a new event has been added t,o the winter weekend pro gram a sled race will be held friday afternoon at 3 any campus organization may enter teams are composed of live students four students the dogs will pull a sled carrying the fifth student around a circular path in the field near acheson two sleds race at on time each team will be timed to deter mine how long it takes them to complete the laps the student body is invited to a coffee hour in millard fillmore lounge following the races the trophy will be presented to the winning team of the dog sled race at this time charles mussen's orchestra to perform at the wind-up carnival dance saturday the weekend festivities will be climaxed saturday night with the annual winter carnival dance this year's dance will feature the orchestra of charles mussen mr mussen who is well-known by many of the university of buffalo students has offered to give one of his favorite jazz concerts dur ing tu intermission period sat urday night the dance will be held at the men casino in willianisville from !) to 1 tickets are j3.50 per cou pie van gogh art now on exhibit the hours for visiting the al bright-knox art gallery have been extended during the exhibition of paintings and drawings by vincent van gogh the exhibition opened jan 30 and will continue until march 11 it includes 142 paintings and draw ings director gordon m smith an nounced the following schedule for visiting the exhibition monday thru friday 10 to 10 saturday 10 to 6 sunday noon to 6 ticket special tickets tor the variety show on thursday will cost 50c stag 75c drag the jazz concert on friday will he 75c per person or 1.25 per couple tickets for the big event of the weekend saturday's dance will he sold for 3.50 a package deal is available where tickets for all three events may be purchased for 5 every day this week tickets will be sold in norton lobby from 11 to 3 sorority rush gals second semester freshman and upperclass iwornen may
