rochester wny's necessary minority newspaper - featuring paid legitimate circulation niagara region vol 60 — no 44 tiil.isiiay october 31 november 6 1985 the buffalo criterion arthur eases ahead in mayor's race by abdullah luqman vital signs say that george arthur has caught mayor griffin and is slowly pulling ahead in the buffalo mayoral race nick constantino's candidacy seems to have no effect on the race between mayor griffin and council president arthur he takes some of the liberal voles that would go to arthur and an equal number that would vote for griffin because they just cannot vote for a black candidate some griffin volunteers said that the people are not coming home this year like they did in 1977 children grandchildren and other relatives filled out forms that said that they had moved back into buffalo using their family's sv-c-a or ou-aer addreoceo right aftm tl primary so that they are eligible to vote in the general election even though they live elsewhere some politicians represent districts that they do not live in thia way "•""- the volunteers said that some people feel that griffin did not back the irish republican army member who was caught at the canadian border wanting to speak and raise funds in the united states and some of his former supporters who no longer serve in his administration are going fishing not voting on election day slowly all factions of the black community seem to have come together to back arthur on merit they seem to be convinced that they and their children will achieve more out of life in buffalo under an arthur administration than they will under another griffin administration a long-time political activist said that charges that arthur will be a racist and only hire blacks in his administration will not stick on him because he tends to lean the other way a bit to make sure that he is fair george k arthur's platform is i believe the public has a right to understand that i strongly advocate and am committed to free and open government one that is free from acrimony and reprisal i believe in foresight and strategic planning to avoid pitfalls and maximize public expendi tures equally important i am committed to providing the city of buffalo with the highest caliber of administration and technical compe tence available my approach for governing the city of buffalo is a mirror of my performance as a councilman-at-large council majority leader and council president i a.-a-.i uiulr t l.lt.r,.j^jttj ana'my approach to leading the city of buffalo through the 1980s and into the 19905 mayor james griffin's platform like most cities in this part of the country buffalo has been hurt by the decline of heavy . industry - plant closings or relocations seem to get most of the headlines and it's easy to lose sight of the progress being made in turning around our local economy studies have shown that two-thirds of new jobs will come from expansion of businesses and industries already in the area under the mayor's leadership the city of buffalo cooperation with other levels of government devised and implemented a comprehensive strategy to assist such businesses to grow and produce the jobs we need nick costantino's platform i be lieve that all who have been the beneficiaries of the strong committment to opportunity from previous genera tions have a responsibility to give it back i can attract talented professionals because i am unemcum tiered by a political machine arcara draws more support the arcara for district attorney committee has announced thai sixteen labor unions five
