rochester niagara region vol 60 - no 43 thursday october 24-30 1985 the buffalo criterion wny's necessary minority newspaper - featuring paid legitimate circulation farrakhan threatens the black community by bayard rustin minister louis farrakhan has always been the subject of heated debates and more so since the 1984 presidential campaign detractors denouce him as an anti-semitic demogogue some supporters embrace his racism others overwhelmed by the frustration in the black community ignore his bigotry and emphasize what they say are his valuable economic programs nthout fully realizing their implications then are three basic problems with the farrakhan message his anti-semit ism the destructiveness of his black nationalism and his insistence that black economic renewal can be achieved only through a politically diastr course for black america besides being anti-democratic and morally repugnant farrakhan's anti semitism drives a wedge between blacks and jews groups that traditionally have formed the vanguard in the struggles for civil rights and social i justice he threatens to undermine the coatlllofi of blacks jews organized labor and others essential for social and economic change in our multi-racial society this coalition secured the legislative victories of the civil rights movement in the 1960s and laid the groundwork for major economic and social progress for blacks and other minority groups farrakhan's emphasis on separatism and his position that blacks have no stake in the political system threaten to reverse the progress that resulted from the 1964 voting rights act the increasing number of black elected officials nationwide is proof of that progress historically black nationalist movements in this country have represented emotional outbursts lack ing attainable economic programs while relying on inflammatory rhetoric to generate support they have arisen in times of despair when expectations were dashed or hard own victories were threatened with reversal after world war i black soldiers were confident that having helped win the war for democracy in europe they would find democracy at home instead the 1920s brought a period of lynchings high unemployment and violent raids on the black community from this despair marcus garvey's back to africa movement arose few blacks heeded his call for a return to africa many however responded to his message of black pride and white inferiority during the late 19605 when the dramatic civil rights victories in the south were not followed by equal gains in the north the black power move ment emerged proclaiming that black is beauti ful fiery orators including ii flap brown and stokley carmichael attempt ed to run whites and especially jews out of the civil rights movement to this day no one can describe the concrete economic or social program developed by the back to africa or black power movements faced with massive cuts in social programs an intolerably high rate of unemployment and indifference to affirmative action by the reagan administration many blacks are today responding positively to farrakhan's philosophy that proclaims blacks the chosen people and promises them power forever his agenda whether a separate black nation or merely black economic self-suffi ciency is no prescription for the crushing economic realities facing black america one wonders why when black farrakhan threatens black community fare increase from 75 c to 80c effective nov 1st metro bus announced that effective on friday nov ist only the buffalo lackawanna and niagara exciting and enlightening experience boosting my personal feelings of patriotism and confidence in our u s government the following essay will entail comments made by dr marshall and myself during our conferences with reagan's closest advisors along with a personal reflection on being with reagan's closest advisors and a personal reflection on being with president reagan in the white house jack hume the founder of citizens for america pushed reagan to run for governor in 1965 and for president in 1968 hume stresses that the reagan revolution must outlive his adminis tration hume notes that reagan turned around california from poor judges parks and operations to one of the best states in the country hume wants the citizens for america to prevent destruction of reagan's programs reagan's programs lew lehrman mentioned that citizens for america will provide a month-long program for national security before the u s./soviet summit meeting lehrman feels that reagan's tax reform will provide more jobs and help to tax less middle income people on foreign affairs lehrman said that president reagan proved for the first time that with grenada communism can be stopped jack kemp our local congress man also met with our group kemp feels that he stands for a global revolution of ideas kemp says that it is fun to see populist or conservative thoughts take hold and mentioned that tax
