assistance welfare issues state social services commissioner to keynote the health and welfare coalition of buffalo and erie county inc as part of its 13th annual meeting will hold an educational forum on public assistance and welfare reform issues in new york state this event will be held on june 24th from 2 lo 4:30 p.m in the walker room of st paul's cathedral pearl at church sts cesar a perales com missioner of the state department of social services will be the keynote speaker at this forum he will discuss the findings of a new bro chure prepared by the department titled myths die hard according to mr r«-_l«r oh p_i__iem issued the brochure to educate the public about what it does and to challenge myths about welfare recipients the program is free and open to the public a special fathers day gift governor mario m cuomo was recently honored as national father-of-the-year in a special ceremony sponsored by the national fathers day council -•• -----...____.. _______.. it - and his two sons andrew and christopher robinson announces availability of free health care county legislator barry l robinson is encour aging all persons who are jobless and uncovered by any helth insurance plan to contact the health care project of erie county a program that provides free or low-cost medical ser vices to eligible persons legislator robinson re iterated his support for the project which connects participating physicians and other health care providers with eligible persons in need of care persons unemployed and uninsured are eligible if they do not qualify for medicaid or public assis tance and are suffering from an acute medical condition robinson said this program was designed to care for the people who fall through the cracks....those who one way or another find themselves uninsured and out of work said robinson robinson said statistics for the program's first six months showed that 62 percent of those individ uals referred to participat ing physicians for treat ment lived in the city of buffalo he added that 73 percent considered the services provided through the health care project as excellent but the project's in take levels are below capacity now that means the project and its participating doctors and pharmacies could be handling more people than they are right now said legislator robinson • the health care project's telephone num ber is 883-0733 robinson added that some physicians are strik ing because of the contro versy over malpractice insurance rates and that patients with regular physicians should call the state health depart ment s physician access referral number to ascertin the availability of their services the physician access number is 847-4357 proposal calls for tax exemptions for vets councilman-at-large vincent j lovallo has submitted a resolution calling for the council to support recent new york state legislation which expands the scope of real estate tax exempitons for qualifying veterans the new york legislation if approved by local govern ments would allow 15 percent exemptions for war time veterans an additional 10 percent for war time veterans who saw action in combat and up to j 50 percent exemption for ' disabled veterans the legislation will aid veterans of the korean and viet nam wars who for the most part were ineligible for the current tax exemption veterans who already enjoy an exemption will have the opportunity to make a choice into which program they would like to partici pate with this legislation we have the opportunity to correct the inequities which exist in our current veterans tax exemptions and demonstrate our con cern support and grati tude for all veterans lovallo said mr lovallo also re quested that the common council special committee on rev assessment and various city department heads research the differ ent options of this program to provide the benefits to veterans without adversely affecting the city of buffalo retirement party planned for the concerned wo men for a better com munity will sponsor a stress-management workshop for black women the workshop will be held from 7 to 9 p.m the guest speaker will be dr myra gordon senior counseling phy chologist at buffalo state college dr gordon is also in private practice and serves as a psychological consultant to head start dr gordon received a b a degree in psychology from cornell university she also received a m a and a ph.d in clinical commu nity psychology from the university of buffalo she has served on the u b dental school for almost two years she taught dental practice manage ment to junior and senior dental students and a very large part of this work included work on stress management she was the executive director of the niagara community action pro gram inc in niagara falls n v from 1981 to 1985 in that capacity she managed a staff of 40 people administered a two million dollar budget and ran 9 large human service programs includ ing youth services senior services energy conser vation services and infor mation and referral dr gordon is presently the senior counseling psychologist in the health and counseling center at buffalo state college she also develops campus wide programs in stress management dr myra gordon pauly to address sr council installation the 13th annual instal lation luncheon of the council of senior citizens clubs of buffalo and erie county inc will be held on wednesday june 26 at the marygold manor in cheektowaga erie county legislator william a pauley of the 14th district will install the officers and board members the guest speaker will be thomas a moniyhan area director region 9 u.a.w of western new york presentation of the council's distinguished community service award will be presented to miss helen awards dinner in conjunction with the buffalo schools the association sponsored a black history week composition contest tammy and phillip parris both won first prize in their division tammy was the winner of the bth annual carter g woodson essay contest in grades 4 to 6th division she is 10 years of age phillip age seven-and one-half years old was the first place winner in the 1985 black history composition contest in division a grades 1-3 tammy is a 4th grade student and phillip a 2nd grade student both attend follow through school at public school 8 located at east utica and masten aye they are the children of elder and mrs phil parris of 52 kermit st in buffalo they also attend new hope church of god in christ 285 masten avenue at laurel elder ureese chillis is their pastor phillip wrote the following poem my favorite black american in buffalo's history my favorite black in buffalo is a hard worker frank e merriweather jr is never a shirker he takes pride in a job well done and works hard while others have fun a name that speaks of buffalo history is merriweather in business and politics in our cap he's a feather unchanging in helping others he's not fair weather my admiration of frank is great as you can gather let's honor this great man of buffalo no doubt he is respected by friend and foe the best time to bestow this honor is while he's living i will encourage him and help others begin selfless giving tammy parris wrote the following essay the history of the afro american family in western new york frank e merriweather jr was born in houston texas he moved with his family to buffalo on sept 6 1922 his father frank e merriweather sr a graduate of tuskegee institute with a degree in journalism printing and machine shop went into the printing business in 1923 establishing the criterion press which today is the third oldest black business in erie county it was at this time that frank jr joined the business as a delivery and errand boy shortly after this he added a 65 customer daily newspaper route to his duties for two years when his father founded the buffalo criterion news paper in 1926 today it is the oldest minority newspaper in upper new york frank jr began to learn the printing trade and became an efficient composiiton job pressman and in the 30s became a linotype operator and machinist a stereotypist a cameraman ad_*ii_botv)-_i27rtver he attended public schools in buffalo and attended the buffalo collegiate center during this span he studied the violin beginning at the me morial center and urban league he played in the school no 32 orchestra the hutchinson central high school orchestra the all high school orchestra and the buffalo symphony training orchestra he organized a jazz orchestra and led it for six years in 1951 mr merriweather entered politics and became a candidate for the fifth ward supervisor he was later appointed to the post of information clerk of the buffalo common council and asked to be a candidate for councilman of the ellicott district upon the death of his father in 1959 he assumed the leadership of the criterion press and the buffalo criterion of which the criterion is known for its outstanding community work mr merriweather has served as a committeeman in the fifth ward and fifth district from 1952 to i960 a committeeman in the masten district from 1960 to 1978 and was a member of the erie county executive committee a member of the buffalo human relations committee and a former vice president of the local branch of the naacp a member of the masons phai and is a member of the lincoln memorial united methodist church he is one of the founders of frontier elk lodge a member of the rapid transit board the crisis service board and the hickory st center board he is married to the former miss evelyn patterson and they are the parents of three daughters two sons and five grandchildren tammy parris phillip parris frank e merriweather jr xmas in june baseball game to be held in conjunction with international youth year the west side business & taxpayers association the salvation army and the u s marine corps will sponsor the third third annual christmas in june baseball game with the buffalo bisons at war memorial stadium proceeds from the mon day june 24th game will benefit the 1985 toys for tots campaign christmas in june has repeatedly been greet ed with warm response by the western new york community making it possible for us to serve the areas underprivileged children at christmas and to fund the annual santa claus parade in novem ber join the buffalo bisons buffalo jills the buffalo booster rooster local po litical figures and all around sound for the evening's activities en tertainment will begin at 6 p.m with a sound show and santa's arrival by helicopter the evenings enjoyment will coninue at 7 p.m when the red hot buffalo bisons challenge the indianapolis indians in addition to an enjoyable evening you will be strengthening the ability of the west side business and taxpayers associaiton to serve the needs of children through out the buffalo area and demonstrating support for the new triple a franchise buffalo bisons ronald a carnevale arcara fundraiser scheduled a cocktail party will be held in honor of erie county district attorney richard j arcara on thursday june 13th from 6 to 8 p.m at salvatore's italian gardens 6461 transit road depew the fundraising festivi ties in support of mr arcara's re-election cam paign will feature cock tails and hors d'oeuvres the three co-chairmen of the event are charles b barcelona
