review of termination decisions disabled new yorkers may be able to have their social security benefits re instated thru the passage of a new federal law and three court orders assemblyman william b hoyt id-buffalo has an nounced any new york resident who was terminated from federal disability benefits any time since june 1 1976 can now request a new review of that ter mination decision and get restored benefits while awaiting the new decision this is the result of a ruling in sciiislfer v heckler and the social security disability bene fits reform act of 1984 said assemblyman hoyt in addition new york residents who applied for benefits but were denied can also gain a new review through court orders in city of new york v heckler and dixon v heckler disabled persons whose • benefits were terminated before june 1 1976 may also request a new review and receive benefits while awaiting a decision only if they had an administration appeal pending on that date in order to revieve reinstated benefits you must complete a form that can be obtained from your local social security office individuals are also encouraged to hire an attorney you can obtain a referral to an attorney who handles social security cases by calling the national organization of social security claimants representatives at 11-914-735-8812 a toll free number 11-800-342-3009 has also been set up to obain tribute to the minorities in media television approximately thirty of the fifty-three minorities employed in professional television wgrz-tv 2 wivb-tv 4 wkbw-tv 7 wned-tv 17 wutv-29 and cablescope attended the tribute to them for their work in their respective positions joseph freeman general manager of station wufo and chairman of the l h i media committee served as master of ceremonies councilman-at-large clifford bell special guest inspired the guests and audience with creative poetry thai was significant and relevant to the career of communications the guest hostess was sarah norat wkbw-tv 7 public affairs director and urban focus ex-producer guest panelists were octavia hudson news reporter tv-4 sarah lewis community service director tv-4 willie walker p.m magazine camerman yvette bishop traffic tv-29 willie louie tv-29 dwight roundtree account executive tv-7 and carl buckner cablescope the intent of this special program was not only to recognize the minorities in television at all levels but to afford them the opportunity to share their experi ences struggles and efforts in meeting the challenges that they have encountered in their professional careers the audience was very receptive as each of the panelists spoke and responded graciously to the questions fielded by other blacks in the media and interested community residents following the meeting the guests and speakers enjoyed delicious refreshments served and continued to discuss issues and many acquaintances were made for the first time while sharing this meaningful and purposeful affair lodges message to black educators assocation on tuesday april 16th buffalo council president george k arthur took his campaign message to the black educators associa tion of western new york mr arthur gave the association membership an opportunity to air issues that impact upon the quality of life in buffalo in general as well as specific education al issues he responded brilliantly to these concerns while giving an overview of this perceived role and re sponsibilities as a pros pective mayoral candidate mr arthur's thorough and enlightening presen tation revealed wisdom experience and en thusiasm greatly impres sing the association mem bership the black educators association gave its moral political and financial sup port and endorsement to george arthur for mayor of buffalo rusk nominated brian d rusk national director for the polish american congress which represents 13 million polish americans in the united states has been nominated by town of new hartford new york supervisor the honorable john j kazanjian as an outstanding ycung man of america for 1985 mr rusk is the director of public affairs for daemen college located at 4380 main st in am herst doug blankenship chairman of the advisory board for the outstand ing young man of ameri ca organization noted that this is an honor recognizing young men throughout the nation for professional achievement and community service outstanding graduate soror of alpha kappa alpha mrs king received the altha c brown award for outstanding chapter basileus president at the great lakes regional when it was held in inkster michigan in 1984 mrs josephine hunter robbins principal of st augustine center school was presented the made lyn m hairston humani tarian and caring award for exemplified caring and performance of large and small
