mount an extensive lobbying campaign to con tinue federal funding for the community action organization erie coun ty's anti-poverty agency federal funding for the community action or ganization is in great jeopardy at this point the federal budget currently before congress contains no money for the commu nity services block grant which funds cao and other agencies like it if this budget proposal goes through it would mean the closing of all cao centers in erie county and the discon tinuation of virtually all the agency's services to the underprivileged robinson said robinson's resolution which will be acted on by the legislature at its april 18th session notes that the cao serves economi cally disadvantaged resi dents youngsters and senior citizens from throughout erie county best and a host of nieces nephews and other relatives and friends columbia university should pull the plug on south africa no matter what the outcome the terrible arrogance of columbia university as it combats the commitment of its own students to the south africa freedom struggle has been laid bare the hunger strike by six students and the sit-in by an additional 300 students was mounted to protest the university's hard-line refusal to invest 33 million from companies doing business in south africa columbia university's arrogance carries a special irony for it was that university which present south african nobel prize winner bis , desmond tutu at its 1983 com mencement the univer sity made the presentation in the bishop's absence for the racist apartheid regime which rules mr tutu's country refused to allow the bishop to leave south africa and so in portest columbia univer sity placed an empty chair on the stage in honor of the absent churchman university officials then went even further in can 1984 columbia president michael sovem and others traveled to south africa to personally present to the bishop the honorary degree that he had be prevented from accepting now , one eyar later it is that same mr sovern who is threatening to suspend or expel those students who continue the sit-in to protest the policies which he himself decried for the south african students involved expulstion is a particularly let hei threat for it would mean that their student visas would no longer be valid it is therefore likely that they would then be deported and forced to return to the very regime whose in humanity they now so vehemently protest columbia claims that the university has di vested itself of stock in corporations which have shown indifference to south africa's repressive regime it also claims that the 33 million investment is but a small part of its total holdings ibm and other corpora tions also iuempi ur excuse their operations in south africa the same way saying that tl.ey have always voiced their opposi tion to apartheid and they too add that only a small percentage of their profits come from south africa this is no longer in acceptable excuse — if it ever was for years corporations doing business in south africa and their investors declared their repugnance to apartheid yet the evil remains and the amount of the investment is not important whether columbia supports south africa with a 33 million investment or with a 3,000 investment it is still supon of a repressive regime the students at colum bia understand this even if their university does not the holocaust in south africa must end but that end will not come with strong words it will come only by pulling the plug on south africa's life support system — u s invest ments this is charles e
