western new york con ference of the ame zion church will be held april 10-12 at st luke church 314 e ferry st begin ning at 2 p.m wed nesday april 10th approximately 300 per sons will be attending representing over 30 con gregations from as far away as albany n y the theme is for we walk by faith not by sight bishop j clinton hog gard prelate of the fourth episcopal district from indianapolis indiana will preside over the check-up meeting which precedes the congress on wed nesday the congress will in clude workshops on chris tian ethics for today the black family-basic values career planning christian vocations the meaning of church mem berships music the chemical society and human sexuality dr george l blackwell and general secretary of christian education of the ame zion church will read bible study and bring the communion message at the closing friday evening session miss lacreta rutledge of rochester n v president of the congress will preside along with other youth officers at many of the sessions the clergy christian educa tion workers from the buffalo syracuse and al bany districts will be serving as leaders the congress is open to all age groups the thursday evening banquet will highlight the many talents of the youth in competition dr andrew e whitted is host pastor and miss sarah l lewis is confer ence director of christian education the public is arthur grin age were held from the lutheran church of our saviour saturday march 16 at 11 a.m the rev robert wilson jr is pastor mr grange was born in corona long island on september 18 1916 the son of the late clarence and louise grinage in 1923 the family moved to buffalo where he attended the buffalo schools he was a talented football player on december 13 1947 he married madeline brown they were the parents of one cheryl darlene who pre ceded him into the eternal presence of god in 1981 ted served in the united states army air force and in the army corps of engineers during world war 11 after his service in the military he was em ployed for 23 years by the international railway co now the niagara frontier transportation authority he also operated ed die's men shop on jeffer son avenue and was active in many civic groups mr grinage possessed a rare baritone voice and sang in the vacation glee club and the senior choir of the lutheran church of grinage theodore a grinage foundry patterns of bethlehem to go on sale the great lakes indus trial committee of the preservation coalition of erie county will host an exhibition and sale of original bethlehem steel foundry patterns in the lobby of theatre place 622 main st on friday april i 13 and 14th at the following times friday april 12th irom 5:30 to 10:30 p.m sat apr 18 12 p.m to 10:30 p.m and sun apr 14 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m the patterns hand crafted of fine woods by pattern makers working at bethlehem steel are at least 30 years old with many dating from the turn of the century described by ron korman owner of muleskinner antiques clarence n v who helped in the appraisal as industrial objects dart the patterns come in various shapes sizes and colors the patterns were donated to the coalition by eion gordon director of district reclaimation bethlehem steel sale and exhibition space has been donated by irving korn of theatre place also on display will be an exhibit of old photo graphs depicting opera tions in the early mills these photographs have been loaned by the steel plant museum lacka wanna n y jerry soltis and jim swinnich are coordinators all proceeds from the sale will be used to fund a brochure which will high light key facts about industrial structures on buffalo waterfront it is hoped that the brochure will begin to foster an awareness of buffalo's historic role in the evolu tion of design theory and technological advance ment via her industrial structures for further information call 837-8858 bass to receive public service award general g bass a teacher at seneca vocational high school who has been instrumental in developing sports and recreational programs for area youth is the recipient of a 1985 public service award from the alumni association of the state university at bufflo he will be honored with three other awardees for distinguished professional and community service at a luncheon april 17 at the hyatt regency they are buffalo mayor james d griffin sister denise a roche gnsh president of d'youville college and rev robert o timber lake executive director and pastor of city mission society inc of buffalo while serving as recreation director for the buffalo parks department and the urban league and as director of the spruce street police athletic league bass was respon sible for establishing such programs as the inner city _■_■league the inner city and suburban tennis camp and the m & t basketball tournament he also organized track basketball and softball leagues and was founder of the east side tennis club a canisius college graduate who played semi professional baseball and basketball bass has raised funds to take his teams on the road and has helped a number of local athletes to secure college scholarships he is currently the women's tennis coach at canisius and led the team last year to its first winning season general g bass founder's day program huge success the trinity baptist church 41 spruce st recently held its annual founder's day program honoring the late dr e w d isaac founder of the b t u rev a charles ware pastor of friendship baptist church delivered the message honorees for outstanding church association nnoa represents some 525 black naval marine and coast guard commissioned officers the organization was founded in 1972 to increase the number and contributions of all minorities in the officer corps the men and women of nnoa volunteer for off duty visits to schools offer career counseling to its members and serve as tutors in public schools they are important role models for black youth ensign bernard w robinson was the first black man to win a commission in the us naval reserves on june 18,1942 in june 1949 tho navy commissioned the first black graduate of the u.s naval academy at annapolis maryland en sign wesley a brown on march 17 1944 the first 13 black men were commissioned as officers in the regular navy these men are called the golden thirteen today there are 2.204 black commissioned of ficers in the navy including 7 flag highest ranking officers 1 vice admiral 4 rear admirals and*2 commodores there are 967 black commis sioned officers in the marine corps
