history month increases by mark hyman journalist historian after lis founding in 1926 black history week moved along uneventful ly the civil rights movement however inspired dynamic black awareness black history week blossomed the surge of interest and pride in black history and the new thirst for knowledge became suddenly intense in 1976 fifty years later black history week evolved into black history month now in its 9th year black history month is still growing thanks to the pioneering work of black historian dr carter g woodson cicero famous roman senator orator and writer had this to say about self knowledge people who know nothing of their history before they were bom are perpetually children there are numerous advantages of black history month and its value increases from year to year black _ »••-__-, it â€ΕΎ-.- h â– r>v rj .->,,__-__ _ new __._. increasing sense of persons " worth it says to them that all of the demeaning things said about them are not true it teaches black children that ' they have had a share of the past with other blacks and that their lives did not begin with slavery most important and contrary to accusations the history of the black child has not been a listless non-productive _ vacuum of doing nothing black children are learning that their people even though enslaved helped build america into a great nation by farming mining manufacturing and railroading black history month allows blacks to point to great almost super human achievements during world history — and in america accomplishments which were made under the most oppressive odds such as lewis latimer's discover of a technique to make filaments for light bulbs without them there would be no light or of granville woods who invented the train-to-tain telegraph system elizah mccoy invented methods for tiling machinery including hot steam locomotives dr percy julian discovered a medical treatment for the pain of arthritis and for glaucoma we welcome black history month celebration points to acommplishment honors leaders so that blacks might honor great leaders and great personalities of the past many of whom had not been known before chrispus attucks was the first man black or white to die for young america's freedom against britain benjamin o davis jr became the first u s air force general who commanded two air force squadrons during world war 11 the 99th pursuit squadron and the 332 nd pursuit squadron they won 85 distinguished flying crosses dr george washington carver a chemist at tuskegee institute extracted 300 usable products from the peanut and sweet potato including paints fertili zer cosmetics end gkie medicines this celebration proves that blacks had roots civilized roots which go back in time to pre-history ancient times and up through past in africa europe and in america it is a time of increasing self awareness and a triumph over the ignorgance of self which imprisoned them it is refreshing and inspiring to know that in europe there were distinguished blacks alexander dumas wrote the count of monte cristo and the thre musketeers juan pareja cuomo attended puerto rican legislative caucus governor mario m cuomo addressed more than 3,000 people at the annual dinner of the black and puerto rican legislative caucus last weekend in albany governor cuomo is shown with the caucus chairman senator leon bogues d-l manhattan right and new york city clerk david n dinkins left the three days of caucus sponsored activities drew more than 8,000 people to the state plaza concourse and convention center panalists pose from writer's workshop a writers workshop was recently given by the criterion columnist school teacher and community activist mrs eva m doyle at the st augustine center 1600 fillmore aye a host of people participated in this informative program panelists included dr john roes dixon criterion columnist mark o'riley karima ali reporter carl allen and others the photo shows some of the panelists from left mark o'riley carl allen mr and mrs doyle and seated kauma au and cynthia jefferson hare to run for fillmore council seat maxine e hare former intern to shelia murphy declares her candidacy for the fillmore district council seat ms hare a recent widow is a 1984 graduate of medaille college with a b s degree in govern ment service she is a 16-year resident of the fillmore district and vice president of the schule street block club she has been an em ployee of the buffalo board of education for over 17 years ms hare is a member of calvary cme church where she has served as chairman of the trustee board the fillmore district must have unity dignity and a reliable voice to express the needs and concerns of the entire com munity remarked ms hare she has one son terance who is a senior and student athlete at lafayette high school maxine e hare training course in sexual exploitation planned for developmentally disabled the erie county as sociation for retarded children inc and the western new york society of sexuality professionals in collaberation with bellevue hospital auxil iary ne york city and the new york state develo pmental disabilities plan ning council are co-spon soring a professional training course in sexual exploitation prevention education for the develop mentally disabled on mar 29 and 30th at the association for retarded children 101 oak st buffalo the two-day training event will focus on the incidence of sexual exploitation and abuse of developmentally disabled people prevention strategies as well as service needs for victims disabled people are often viewed as a sexual and helpless children they are an easy target for rape and assault the incidents of rape and assault on develop tally disabled people often goes unreported due to fear of retributions lack of informaiton about assault and how to reort it and sadly their lack of credibility many disabled people lack the vocabulary to explain what has happened to them and when they do
